Dec 30 '83

Dear Jervy-

I hate to bore you with my troubles, but you have so often & so frankly confided your griefs to me that I feel it a right I have to lay a part of my load on you & that you have a right to bear it. I wrote a firm but kindly letter to Downing which I hoped would rouse his self-respect and restrain him from further persecution, for such his conduct has become. In reply to mine he has written a disrespectful, silly & in a certain sense, threatening letter. His first attempt sufficiently shocked Edwina, she has been ill since, &

unfortunately I had to show her this half-lunatic epistle because she saw it first & recognized, of course, the writing. This has added to her distress for he declares he will see her & that she must have her share of pain. She is kept in constant dread lest he should accost her on the street or call, as he [did?], when he thinks I am out of the house. He says he knows he's cracked but that a brass rivet has been put in, that he is a better companion, can do perspective & 'photographic mounting' better & is altogether more of a man than ever. His letter & his questioning

Betty if Edwina still cares for him, if she liked anybody else, &c. &c, would convince any disinterested person of his demented condition, did not his unmanly conduct is thus destroying the peace of one whose happiness he should strive to enhance, by his silent acceptance of her decision, prove beyond all question that he is not himself. I have not answered his letter. I am too indignant with him---nor shall I notice it as I consider it the outcome of a disordered mind. 'Tis useless to reason with him & as you say I must deal with him personally I will be compelled to do so if he persists in his present course.

All the sympathy & respect his silence heretofore made Edwina feel for him is now converted to dislike and dread. You say you have no influence with him, but if you & his father let him know that you are aware of his indelicate & cruel behavior I think it may affect him, & spare me the painful duty of taking measures to restrain him. I naturally feel great anxiety on this subject but have repressed the angry emotions he aroused in me. I have been told that he carries a pistol & (as in the case of [Rathbane?]) he will in some sudden freak do something desperate. Forgive me for thus troubling you again on this topic, but I feel, as you have often felt, that I must give vent to what is disturbing me. Sincerely yours E Booth

I intended to see you before I left New York and therefore did not write, but various distractions prevented & so time has flown by me unheeded 'till a month has pafsed. I was obliged to leave my poor mother on her back with a broken hip joint and her condition, tho' progrefsing favorably, is still a source of great anxiety. Having an interval of life, in the midst of my dead

monotony, (for my days are all of a dreary drag sort of existence) I have been scribbling to various neglected friends in order to recall myself to their recollection: --

I hoped to pafs the next five weeks in New York but owing to some managerial complications about dates I am compelled to jump from here to Boston Sunday next & so defer my return home for two more weeks at least, perhaps three -- when I hope to see you.

You know that I have nothing to write about beyond myself -- my businefs, or my glooms, that's one reason why I defer correspondence. I rarely go out -- see few folks and hear nothing of interest to you -- or to me.

Callers stop me at this important juncture and I must

You know that I have nothing to write about beyond myself -- my businefs, or my glooms, that's one reason why I defer correspondence. I rarely go out -- see few folks and hear nothing of interest to you -- or to me.

see you before the wedding. Mrs Lillie speaks of you so cordially that we feel we know you already---and our affection for Edwina warms our hearts to all whom she loves. I do not know when anyone's happy news has so appealed to me and I am so glad and thankful for dear Edwina and can congratulate you so unreservedly. How her love honors you. What a blessed gift it is. Very earnestly do I pray for you both---wishing you

My dear husband's friendship for Mr. Booth would cause me to feel a warm interest in all that concerns him or his and---the tenderness of my affection for Edwina makes her happiness a personal joy to me. This will answer as my reason for writing this little word to you.

My dear friend

I do not mean to reproach you but really-endeavor as I will to avoid the filth that is thrown at me in common with all public persons, my friends persist in reminding me of it, only through them (who rarely direct my attention to any good that is published of me) do I learn what a debased monster I am.-The night of my fall at the Academy in New York,

wh was repeated in a more serious manner in Phila & again here (this last behind the scenes, however), I wrote to Edwina a full account of it & prepared her for the howl which would doubtless be raised about it. Had not my friends rushed into print on my behalf the accident would have been unnoticed, but a disappointed agent of my & a set of unpaid 'blackmailers' of the Press saw in that defence of me-against the abuse of our paper only-a good opportunity for their attacks. It has been, is & will (I hope) always be my part to ignore

the filthy "assassins of the Press" (as Forrest termed the so-called critics) and I have, for years, made it a rule to read no theatrical papers or gossip. Yet, as I have told you, my dearest friends fail not to advise me of the fact that I am a fiend incarnate & utterly demoralized. Howells was lately asked if he had seen the savage criticisms in the Gazette of his late works. "Do you suppose that I have no personal friends?" he replied. "O that mine [every?] would write a book" (I quote from mouldy memory) or act upon a theatre!--My friend, I am in no danger-spite of evil

influences & ill reports concerning my health & my domestic affairs all goes well. Do not be alarmed at this letter-'tis but one of several of the kind that I have written to other friends in every port of America on this topic-the first was to my dear old school-marm, in Balto, who knew me as a tiny boy & wrote several imploring appeals to me. My thanks for your goodness and yr invitation (wh I cannot accept) are deeper than I can express. Kindest regards to yr husband and blessings for you both.

Yr friend ever
E.B.

Writing in haste & after so many letters of the same tenor I find that I have repeated myself & made other faults. Good night!

Good night!

Dear Jervy

Yours of June 6th has been in my pocket with several others for a great while; every now & then I'd attempt to write but as often deferred doing so until I feel ashamed of my neglect. Your last (Aug: 15) came here while I was on the water with Barrett, hence some delay in giving it the prompt reply wh it demands. Your offer of the Boughton picture just suits me, albeit I am loth to deprive you of it.

Regarding the Mtge. of course, my dear boy, I am willing to do anything for your relief & convenience in the matter, therefore make the sale if you care on the terms you propose.

I've been here most of the summer & have had a very quiet & restful time, yachting & driving nearly every day. Monday I go to Newport for a few days & then to Boston to have my wardrobe packed for my long tour---beginning Sept 13th, in Buffalo, the intervening time will be devoted to rehearsals in New York. I've not been very happy

of late. My own folly at the Academy is ever rising to shame & disgust me, and my domestic disappointment also depresses me. Struggle as I will to dispel these clouds they will oppress me, & I suppose that brooding over the second provoked the first. The next 8 months (maybe 10) I shall be whirled about in the unreal world of my profession, and perhaps it will be better for me to continue to work hard as long as I am able to do so & thus keep my mind away from home affairs. Thank God, the longest life is but a span as the worst.

In your first letter you mentioned Launt. I've not heard from or of

him (except by your letter) for a very long time. I was told that he nearly lost his commission for the statue---before it was in plaster; I hope he did not---for it would render him penniless. He told me (long ago) that he would get [$?] 30000 for it, then go to Florence & settle [$?] 15000 on his children & return here. He said nothing of Maria. Poor fellow! but ah, how much more pitiful is the case of Maria & the children!

I wish that I could write a oftener to you, Jervy, but as I grow older I become more apathetic & listless, this is the only cause on my long silences Adieu! Love to all

Edwin (29 Chestnut Boston)

April 8. 1887.

Dear Colonel

Not recognizing the superscription on Your letter received today I did not open it until I reached home this evening. [illegible] following your suggestion I have written the note to Judge Stallo, which will go out by Saturdays Steamer.

Yes, the papers, certificates of the Harny portrait & my [one?] original Ribera, the documents & seals showing who had at different times owned

owned the picture, & how it came into the hands of Mr Robert McPherson – virtuoso – who sold it to me, were all left with all my personal valuable papers at [Canon Club?] from whence I escaped as you know with nothing

I have recently tried through one of my [counsel?] in R.I. to devise a way to obtain my papers, but it has [seemed?] impossible without a [new?] sensation. For spite & petty vengeance the Spragues would only give them up to force

For the picture in question,

question it seems strange with so many able art critics as there are in News York there should not be [taste?] enough among to see the merit of this master-piece without the further proof than that as the time I bought it. Mr Gladstone was trying to secure the Harney portrait for the British Museum, but I outbid him. Mr. R.McPherson was one of the experts in Rome up to the time of his death – about 1876. [He?] was charged with buying for the National Collections of Works of Art for Great Britain.

Our artists

artists in Rome were unanimous as to the picture being original & one of great interest & merit & not one voice urged my securing it as a rare acquisition for the United States.

[Reming? & illegible] both pronounced it beyond doubt a Ribera last winter when they saw it at the [Lakes?] Club & [Reming?] who is a prominent member of the Jury of the French Salon without my telling him anything of the history of the picture or its painter exclaimed “The master-hand is there!” & when I told him

it was the work of the Great Ribera, his comment was, it was then painted when the artist was still young & gave great attention to detail & had grown not so confident of his own power! A shrewd & artistic criticism. The fact of this work of Ribera not being found – as you say – not being named in the catalogue in the [Astor?] Library maybe accounted for by its owner having [few?] in any public gallery in [illegible] but always private property. Of course I will do what

what I can to obtain duplicate copies & certificate of its authenticity, but I have no doubt if I were to take this portrait to London to be sold in May, it will bring twice the sum that is likely to be obtained in New York

Perhaps after all as its sale has [hung?] fire so long I had better do this.

I will write also a brief note to Mr Gladstone whom I know personally & ask if he remembered the picture & his opinion of its merits.

Yours very truly

Katharine Chase.

Augst. 8th 1888

My dear Judge,

Your kind letter of the 1st inst, had a warm welcome I assure you. I was, indeed, glad to hear from you again after so prolonged a suspension of our epistolary relations, & especially rejoiced to receive so favorable an opinion of my correspondence with Genl Speed and that which you have been pleased to express. Such an opinion from one of your eminently judicial mind, and

acquaintance with all the points of this controversy, I accept & shall treasure up as a most valued muniment of my reputation, so cruelly assailed in the long ago, but so effectively defended by your timely intervention. I say timely, for it was just at the moment, that Andrew Johnson, was doubtless exulting in the belief, that he - his friend Genl Speed cooperating - had given a stab to my character from which it could never recover. For this intervention, my dear Judge, I owe you "a debt immense of endless gratitude".

I have a joyful belief, that so long as God is on his throne, angelic hands will be found to roll away the stone from the portals of the sepulchre in which men & devils have entombed the truth. That Genl Speed, in a room adjoining to that in which I held my interview with Prest Johnson, & through a communicating door that chanced to be ajar, heard every word spoken by the President & myself, while he was considering the record of the trial of the assassins, & the petition for clemency in the case of Mrs Surratt, I entertain no doubt - indeed I have satisfactory

reasons for an absolutely complete conviction to that effect. His subsequent conduct towards me, so wholly indefensible, can, I think be explained only on the theory, that he had under influences I shrink from discussing, in effect, pledged himself to Andrew Johnson, to suppress the truth in his (Johnson's) interest, heedless of possible consequences to himself & to me. That suppression was certainly inflexibly maintained in life & in death.

This whole affair has been for me, a painful revelation of the possibilities of the utmost dishonor in the high places of the world, & it should be a solemn warning for all as it has been

for myself. Woe to the man who, in trustful ignorance of the treacheries of our race, leaves, for one single moment, his reputation in the power of another - be he peasant or President.

Why is it that you no longer come to Washington? You certainly have not turned your back on the Capitol, the theatre of your past brilliant exploits, & so the seat of your fame. your friends & admirers here are legion, & would rejoice in the privilege of clasping your hand once more. Have you yet entered upon the work of collecting & preparing for publication in permanent form, the speeches, reports, letters &c which would

illustrate your past professional & political career? It is only through such a publication that coming generations can possess themselves of that record of your genius, your learning & your patriotism, now so familiar to your contemporaries. This work is too important to yourself, your family & the country to be left to others. You alone can do it justice. Time passes & there should be no delay. I have personal reasons for my solicitude. Remember, I heard your grand argument on the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, & in my judgment, that speech deserves immortality, quite as much as Cicero's

oration against Verres or that of Sheridan against Warren Hastings. Pardon the earnestness with which I urge this. Your kind wishes, my dear Judge, are most heartily reciprocated. I pray that the vesture of life may continue to rest lightly on you, in despite of the years which are pressing upon us all, & that your evening may be as cloudless as your morn was triumphant.

Ever faithfully,

your friend

J. Holt

Hon Jno. A. Bingham.

Augst.

Ever faithfully,

your friend

J. Holt

Hon Jno. A. Bingham.

Hon. J.A. Bingham, Cadiz, O.
Dear Sir: I have concluded to make application at the proper time to re-enter the government service and I now kindly ask you to give me the weight of your influence when the appropriate moment comes.

A number of prominent gentlemen Judge Holt, Gen. Lou Wallace, Gen. Ekise and others will assist me to the extent

of their ability.

My life has been one of trial and persecution , persecution by the Democratic party and, I regret to say, by leading church dignitaries in the church in which I was reared. This has made it all the more bitter.

I trust this Government will find me a place to earn my bread, and to that extent protect me against wrong.

Very Resfully Yours
L.J. Weichmann
Please let me hear from you.
