I have just heard of your father's death---the dear old gentleman must have suffered long in his helpless condition & in the knowledge of the care he has been to you. Of course such losses are painful to us & yet they bring a solace in the knowledge that our dear suffers have relief in their release. It is strange that not for

So soon as he [dismisses?] me I am engaged with several friends for a cruise to Bar Harbor, which they defer on my acct.

I hope soon to hear from you---direct to c/o [illegible] C. Benedict Greenwich, Conn & tell me how your own threatened illness stands; I hope it

Dear Jervy
I have just heard of your father's death---the dear old gentleman must have suffered long in his helpless condition & in the knowledge of the care he has been to you. Of course such losses are painful to us & yet they bring a solace in the knowledge that our dear suffers have relief in their release. It is strange that not for

many months did I feel any grief for my mother's death, all I realized was the fact that the dear, weary soul was gone to rest. I feel alarm for you, Jervy; this blow coming at a time when you are ill, mentally and physically, must be greater than you can bear & I sympathize sincerely with Sarah in the anguish she must endure; but women are wonderfully strong in such emergencies & I've no doubt her brave heart will hold you up. I have been badly pestered by many bothers of late & am here for a

few days rest. The next two weeks I expect to pass in the dentist's chair, having sadly neglected my teeth the dentist finds a very serious condition that requires careful treatment. So soon as he [dismisses?] me I am engaged with several friends for a cruise to Bar Harbor, which they defer on my acct.

I hope soon to hear from you---direct to c/o [illegible] C. Benedict Greenwich, Conn & tell me how your own threatened illness stands; I hope it

has passed from you.

Give my affectionate sympathy to your sisters, Jr brother & God bless you!

I did get both your letters from Mexico and have metaphorically kicked myself many times for not telling you how pleased I was---especially with the first very interesting one. The second referred to my illness---wh threatened to be very serious, but I pulled through---although I found it best to curtail my season---four weeks.

I am all right now, but so weary---nothing seems to rouse me from the lethargy which has prevented me from writing not only to you but my other friends, &

this only, dear Jervy, is the why I have neglected you. I hope you will get in the habit of coming here often, at all events while I am here---at present my visit is but brief, but I'll be acting here in October & you must call after---'tis the best place in town for a quiet, congenial loaf. If I'm not below come to my room above & chat. I will try to frame a business-like reply to your business letter, but doubt if I can do it properly. I have no clear recollection of the Mtge---but have an idea that the amount is $14000 & that part of it is on your lot, am I correct? If what I suggest does not suit just jot down how I can

I am sorry you are not entirely well, but glad to know that you are happy on your dear old hill-top. Remember me most kindly to all the family with my love to Jervy.

Dear Jervis-

If what I suggest does not suit just jot down how I can

best serve you in the matter. The papers are in my Boston safe---not here, and it may be a couple of weeks before I go to that city, unless it is necessary you should have them earlier.

I am sorry you are not entirely well, but glad to know that you are happy on your dear old hill-top. Remember me most kindly to all the family with my love to Jervy.

Ever yours

Edwin

I couldn't attend to it at the time but have sent word to send me the chk & I will return it to you for correction. I now go to Boston (Hotel Thorndike) for the next two weeks. Forgive my haste. I hope you are well Yours forever

All were hanged on the same Gallows and at the same time. Genl Hartranft stood on the Gallows platform and read their death sentence. No person can or will dispute this statement.
