Out of me unworthy and unknown
The vibrations of deathless music;
"With malice toward none, with charity for all."
Out of me the forgiveness of millions toward millions,
and the beneficent face of a nation
Shining with justice and truth.
I am Anne Rutledge who sleeps beneath these weeds,
Beloved in life of Abraham Lincoln,
Wedded to him, not through union,
But through separation,
Bloom forever, O Republic,
From the dust of my bosom!

Out of me unworthy and unknown
The vibrations of deathless music;
"With malice toward none, with charity for all."
Out of me the forgiveness of millions toward millions,
and the beneficent face of a nation
Shining with justice and truth.
I am Anne Rutledge who sleeps beneath these weeds,
Beloved in life of Abraham Lincoln,
Wedded to him, not through union,
But through separation,
Bloom forever, O Republic,
From the dust of my bosom!

William Roll became a farmer, his brother, Jacob, was the owner of a store, a grist mill and the Sangamon Town Postmaster, and Pierson Roll became an extensive land owner.
Two years later, John Roll, followed his father, William Roll to Sangamon Town with the balance of the Roll family. It was here that the younger Roll met Abraham Lincoln for the first time early in 1831 when he helped the latter build the flat boat that later became lodged on the RutledgeDam at New Salem, Illinois. John made all the wooden pins for the boat, as in those days wodden pins were used in place of nails.

After Lincoln departed from Sangamon Town life once more became dull and John Roll, like his friend "Abe" left the village and made his home at Springfield, Illinois. It was at Springfield some years later that Mr. Lincoln made his first political promise, stating that when he became president he would give John Roll an office. This was long before Lincoln was thought of for the Presidency.

John Roll was one of the contractors on the Old State House in Springfield, while his brother-in-law, John F. Rague, was it's architect. As a contractor Roll made repairs at the Lincoln home in 1849 and in settlement for the work received "six walnut doors and cash." The doors were made into furniture and souvenirs, which presently are in the author's possession.
In 1854 John Roll's son, William Vandyke Roll, was a school mate of Robert Lincoln at the Illinois State University. His two smaller children, Frank P. and John Linden Roll were playmates of Tad and Willie Lincoln. When the Lincolns departed for Washington, they presented their dog 'Fido' to the Roll boys.

When Mr. Lincoln made his House Divided Speech in the Old State House he said, [quotation on back] "There is my friend, John Roll, etc. etc...........". This friendship persisted to Lincoln's untimely death, after which John Roll until his death in 1901 lived in reveries of his beloved hero of the 'Flat Boat' building days.

The Rolls, with one exception, your author, have followed their friends the Lincoln to the Great Beyond. John Linden Roll is the last of those Rolls that were so intimately associated with the Lincolns. His fondest possessions are the hundreds of souvenirs, pictures, clippings and tokens dealing with Lincoln.

I hope this short biographical sketch gives you a small fraction of the pleasure that I derived in compiling it for you.

Paintings by Edwin Booth Grossmann
January 13 - Feb. 1, 1941

The first exhibition in many years of paintings by Edwin Booth Grossman, one of America's unadvertised artists, will be held at the Marie Harriman Gallery, 61 East 57th Street, New York, beginning January 13. The one-man show, comprising 16 landscapes and still lifes in oil and a small group of watercolors, will continue for three weeks, through February 1.

Grandson of the late Edwin Booth, who founded The Players and who was probably the greatest figure in the making of the American theatre, Grossmann chose a career as a painter despite enviable opportunities and connections with the stage. He studied art at the old Chase Art School and later in Paris where his work was accepted one year by the Paris Salon. Minor exhibitions of his work were held in two New York galleries in 1920 and in 1928. More than a dozen years ago Grossmann withdrew entirely from the exhibiting field in order rigorously to perfect a mature style of painting completely expressive of himself. He has destroyed much of his own work, constantly editing his production to retain only the clearest statements.

-2-

Most of the present group of landscapes are views of the hilly country near Avenue Farm, Fishkill, New York, where the artist has lived for the past five years. There are also marine studies and landscapes from the Maine coast. Derived structurally from the art of Cezanne, the paintings are marked for a highly dramatic use of sunlight, which is thrown against the hills and valleys with a climactic force that reveals the artist's joy in capturing the fleeting moments in nature. The placid lake surfaces, rolling terrain, rising hill-tops, rows of trees, elemental rocks and other forms of the earth's surface are built into pictures that have a strong underlying armature of abstract design.

Nature has always been the first interest in Grossmann's life. As a youth he learned taxidermy in order to form a large collection of stuffed birds and animals which he shot himself. Since that time, however, he has given up hunting, and several of the still lifes of dead game in the present exhibition carry a tragic note of regret for the destruction of wild life.

Grossmann was born in Boston in 1887, the son of a Hungarian-born New York banker and Edwina Booth, the only child of Edwin Booth. Grossmann's father came to America when he was very young and grew up in the Brahmin literary environment of New England where he lived with Celia Thaxter's family on the Isles of Shoals, near Portsmouth, N. H. Grossmann traveled extensively through Europe with his family, and from the age of

-3-

twelve he spent much time in the zoos of New York and Europe sketching all types of animals. His first contact with modernism came through his acquaintance with Alfred Maurer in Paris before the war, but it was not until after Grossmann had returned to American that he fully grasped its significance and began applying its principles to his own work. The paintings in his present exhibition represent a selection of the artist's most recent and mature state of development.
Paul Bird, assistant editor of The Art Digest, has contributed a foreword to the catalogue of the Grossmann exhibition.

Your show last January at the Maria Harriman Galleries impressed me greatly. I found in your paintings and watercolors a vast understanding of nature, a mature richness that has never been surpassed. There was in them a true vision, the vision of a talent that step by step came to a truly universal approach. Your paintings, Mr. Grossman, have something ripe and majestic and earthy.
Because I so appreciate your work I would like to buy a canvass of yours. Is there perhaps something I may purchase that is not too expensive? Please let me know.

Peter said these may mean little to your collection as they are not to Booth directly but of his family. lived. They were in a musty old box in the cellar, the rest of the house was completely empty. Well, Peter and I have an incorrigible love for finding old houses and antiques and there's nothing more dramatic and exciting than to find a marvelous old, deserted house and to walk through it with remnants of the people here'n there (and spirits too!) And Peter did not really steal these - but they were there, unloved and unappreciated and he felt we should give them a home And now if they can add to your collection they'll truly be at home and belong there with you, much more than in a forgotten old musty box in a damp rain-filled cellar. So, dear Mr. Lenthal we are sending them on their way and hope that they will make you happy and that we shall meet one day in the near future. Most sincerely, Ann

I was very interested to learn that from time to time you are giving lectures on the life of my grandfather and that there has been so much interest aroused. I fervently hope that you will soon be able to fill your glass hanging wall cases. During her lifetime my mother donated many costumes etc. belonging to her father to The Players. My own collection is thus small + intimate. I am wondering what is the small photograph of my mother you have acquired? Thank you for writing me such a friendly letter, and the best of luck to you.

I only wish that I could grant your request + furnish you with the photographs you ask for. Unfortunately I have with me here only family photographs which I would not care to give or loan; I am sure you will understand my feelings. Most of the material relating to my family I have had to put into storage + would be impossible to get at. - I would indeed enjoy hearing you lecture on April 9th which will be my birthday! - Again I am so sorry not to be able to help you out in this matter.

Dear Mr. Lenthall -

Thank you for your letter which I do not consider in any way an effrontery as you put it.
                                                                                                      Sincerely yours

February 14, 1863.

At a meeting of the Officers of the 82nd Regt. Ills. Vols. held this day, Lieut. Col. Edward S. Salomon was chosen chairman and Adjutant Eugene F. Weigel secretary, and the following resolutions were offered, and unanimously adoptet:

In consideration of the critical position of our country at present and of the intrigues of miserable politicians and partisans, who - while the true and loyal citizens of our state, with the sacrifice of blood and life, endeavor to destroy the enemies of our most sacred rights; - aid and abett these enemies, at home, by means of treasonable, and our state degrading resolutions, be it resolved:

1., That we, the German soldiers and citizens of the State of Illinois, who have declared themselves willing to sacrifice all for the preservation of the Union, have heard with the greatest indignation of the miserable treachery of the men, who dare to call themselves our representatives.

2., That we endorse with pleasure the emancipation proclamation of our President, and are at any moment ready to execute it with arms in hand.

3., That we regard our Governor Richard Yates, as one of the noblest, truest and most high minded patriots of the United States, and that we refute the infamous attacks and slanders, which have been made upon him by secesh-sympathizing members of the legislature of Illinois, as low and mean in the highest degree, and that we regret that we are no longer at Camp Butler, to have an opportunity of liberating the halls of our capitol, from this detestable scum.

4., That we condemn the majority-report of the house committee on federal relations most decidedly, and that we consider the authors and all those, who voted in favor of this report as rebels and traitors, who deserve to be hung by the side of Jeff. Davis and consorts.

5., That we, contrary to this report, consider the minority report of the same committee, as the noble expression of the sentiments of true patriots, and acknowledge and esteem the same as such with all our heart, and that we are convinced that the same will be endorsed by every soldier of the State of Illinois.

6., That we hope and wish, that this rebellion may soon be suppressed, but only by force of arms, and that then the traitors in the north as well as the leaders of the rebellion in the south, may not evade their just punishment.

7., That these resolutions be published in the "Illinois-Staats-Zeitung" and the "Chicago Tribune,"

and copies thereof be sent to the Governor of Illinois and to our representatives in Congress, as well as to our Colonel Frederic Hecker, who, unfortunately, was prevented by disease, from participating in this demonstration.

Feby 15th 1863

Dear Governor

We are expecting you up here some time this week as you promised to come Mr and Mrs Dunn write in requesting you to come - should you do so and I beg of you that you will you will be entertained as well as possible in a great place like this I hope that you will have started before this reaches your Henry would I think like the school here and it is just such a quiet place as boys of his age ought to be educated in

The condition of this State is very alarming - Unwise men on all sides of the political questions seem to be doing all in their power to stir up the people to achieve

Civil War - I think that there is great danger - From my acquaintance with you you must know that I am not an alarmist - I am not disposed to cry out until there is some real danger - I believe that the time of danger has really come - I hope and pray that it is not so and that I am mistaken but my convictions are so strong that I now beg of you to have placed in some way in your own hands such power as will enable you as the Executive to immediately suppress any insurrection to punish or disobedience of the laws in the most [illegible] manner - I am told there is a county adjoining this (and I get my information from a reliable source) that several hundred men assembled armed to the teeth as if by no previous concert. and drove the negroes out of the county seat - secret meetings are being held all over this section of country --- of course

the negroes have no right here under our laws and of course the people have a right to have secret meetings and to bear arms and I would be the last one to question these rights but this action proved something It proved that there is organization and concerted [action?] - The negroes if to be driven out should be driven out by prosecution and under the laws - The fact of organization and that arms are in the hands of these men who propose to forcibly compel the government to recognize the rebels is sufficient to convince me that there is danger I do not wish to be understood to attribute the wrong to any one political party - I believe that it is necessary that something be done Do not understand that I think these extreme measures should be used against persons who do not commit serious overt acts or who do not forcibly seek to resist the government or get up an insurrection - can you not lay the whole facts before the authorities at Washington or Genl Wright. and prepare yourself for emergency immediately - Please excuse me for saying so much. I know that this subject has not been overlooked by you cherishing as I know you do so much affection for our noble state and for our whole country. Please excuse me for saying so much.

Truly your friend, Clark E. Carr

His Excelency

Richard Yates

Governor of Illinois:

Sir:

It is made my agreeable duty to transmit to you the accompanying proceedings and resolutions, expressive of the sentiments of Illinois volunteers at this post, and in its vicinity, on a subject deeply affecting the success of their arms and the honor of their state.

The almost unanimous vote by which the resolutions were adopted by the different commands, submitted, as they were, without solicitation or pressure, is sufficient evidence of the unswerving loyalty and patriotism of the good and gallant men you have sent to the field.

You may rest assured that these men have no sympathy with that class, whose courage finds expression alone, in a war upon the nation's benefactors and defenders, and who affect to seek peace through submission to Traitors who spurn all offers of peace, not based upon the overthrow of the government, the disruption of the union, and the dishonor of our flag.

Let it be understood, that the Soldiers of Illinois are in earnest. They came to this service

with honest purposes and right convictions of duty - as patriots, not as partisans. Whatever clouds obscured their sight before they see clearly, now. They have passed through the baptism of fire and blood, into a living faith in the justice of their cause, the eternity of the union, and in their own ability to maintain it.

A great mistake is being made in the effort to pervert party names to disloyal uses. The soldier feels, as one feels a disgraceful blow, the wound thus inflicted upon the integrity of his political faith. He holds, however, the remedy in his own hands, and will apply it when the cartridge box gives way to the ballot box. For whatever shapes or names, political organizations then may take, those now sustaining the government and laboring to vindicate the constitution and laws will prevail: while those who hold dalliance with treason, and cry peace when there is no peace, save in dishonor, will shrink from the stage and seek shelter in obscurity.

The honor of Illinois is dear to her soldiers. Their blood has nourished it, and they will not permit it to be compromised. Claiming brotherhood with those at home, who, inspired by your own counsels and labors, have sustained and encouraged
