Sir:

The Department has directed me to arrange with the [south?] agents between Toledo and Quincy to meet at Lafayette hereafter instead of State Line. The arrangement will commence on Friday next, the 11th inst. Let the Wabash agent who gets to the Line on Thursday return to Lafayette that evening on the express train, and start east from there the next morning; and you will please request the agent on the Great Western, who will leave Quincy Thursday evening, to run to Lafayette Friday morning.

The order is for the Western agents to run from Quincy to Lafayette, and for the Eastern agents to run from Toledo to Lafayette. You will please notify me by letter, directed to Indianapolis, as soon as you shall have perfected the arrangement.

Until recently, I believe the Gr. Western agents divided at Springfield. That was changed, I learn, by direction of Spl. Agent Bell,

of Chicago, and is, I think, the proper arrangement; but if the agents think otherwise, they can present their views in a letter to Bell or me, giving the reasons for desiring to divide at Springfield instead of running to Lafayette. They can arrange with Judge Bell to run two off and two on; provided the agents who are resting will always be in telegraphic communication so as to supply deficiencies in case of accidents. I will now give my consent to their resting two at a time on the conditions above mentioned.

Report to me as soon as you confer with the agents.

Hon Rich Yates
My Dear Sir
The enclosed was sent to me at this place - The promptness with you attended to my request in pen what I knew you would do. When I draw on you I always expect my draft to be known I wish I could say so of all those who profess friendship for me I feel much obliged to you for the interest you took in this matter & all others where I have been interested. My nephew Col HY.T. Noble Chief Q.M. of the Dept of Ark wishes me to thank you most kindly for the interest you have taken in his behalf. He is a very active young man & will be back to our state where he will of course have some influence in the future

he is and ever will be your fine friend. This is the last season I shall spend here in this state. I shall be home & able I hope if you can need it to do you some good. My Dear friend do you know that I look forward with much hope to the time when you will take your seat in the Senate of the U.S. I want you to put forth the whole force of your intellect. I want you to be Richard Yates pure & unadulterated & I shall never (if you are) wish you on anybody else. Our state has had some men to be proud of. You can excel Douglass. Lincoln had no better head or heart than yourself but he had opportunity to make himself great that probably no American citizen will ever have again. You once said to me you would like to be senator I told you that you could be. You are thank God. There is but one step more & can't you make it. Be always Richard Yates & let no indulgence of any passion or appetite steal away your good sense & you are safe for the future. The (illegible) you ought to be satisfied with. I have written you plainly as one friend should write another.
Yours truly S Noble

Chief Quartermaster's Office
Little Rock, Ark., Aug 7th 1865

Col Servant has just forwarded me your second letter of recommendation for which as well as the first please accept my sincere thanks I owe you an apology for neglecting to acknowledge the receipt of your first kind letter but the truth is that we were on the move for several weeks either from one post to another or from one barracks to another after which Col Wood was placed in command of the post which put me in command of the regiment and about the same time we made another change of quarters and Col Wood was suddenly taken very ill and is now in a dying condition there is no hope of his recovery and to appearances he will not live over tomorrow night his disease was what is here called "break bone" fever and has run into typhoid. He has had every attention necessary to comfort and cure had the latter been poss ----ible but there is no hope, he must die I am Governor very respectfully and truly yours F Swarrick ---- F Swarrick Nashville Ten acknowledges receipt of letter of recommendation - Col Wood very sick-dying-

Dear Friend
I wrote you a few days since in regard to our friend. There has been quite a change in him. He begins to talk of business and seems inclined to assist in business matters. He has been so occupied in regard to Custom House, Politics and Women that I thought he was loosing sight of a good many legitimate business transac-tions in which he could have assisted his friends. He seems to appreciate that fact.

My eye being more to business than Politics, and his to Politics I have noticed the opportunities for opperating when he had not untill it was too late. The fact is not being brought up to business. He does not see the openings or appreciate the advantages his positions gives him for operating in a legitimate way through a friend in out-side matters. The Custom House is running all O. K. The Collector is making himself very popular with the citizens. All that have transacted business with the Custom House seem well pleased and speak highly of his Collector. He seems to gain the confidence of the Creoles especially among the Ladies. If his modesty does not [illegible] him. I think he will become quite a [illegible] among them. Would not [illegible] until fall. My regards to family. Yours truly Wm. Babcock

Hon Richard Yates
Dear Sir

Your letter of July 22nd is rec'd and is not [late?] for my purpose. I arrived in the city too late to secure a suitable house or to accomplish anything of importance for the fall session- I hope to be all settled by the February term. I cannot sufficiently thank you for your correspondence to my request for the use of your honored name; I think I appreciate the full value of your generous offer-Twas almost a assumption for a stranger to make such a request of you, 'twas noble and generous of you to grant it. When I sent my letter to you I felt that you would be justified in refusing but for some reason which I cannot explain I believed you would gratify me. I think to expect this kindness was to be in keeping with my [conception?] ---- of the character of our noble Ex Governor; a conception formed from the record of his public life and services, a record everywhere marked by words and deeds of benevolent kindness, and which has endeared him to the hearts of Illinoisans no less than his scholarly statesmanship. His kind letter did not disappoint me, and I felt a thrill of gratification that I has not miscalculated the strength of the feeling which you have always shown for Ills officers & men, their misses and children. The words of justice which you give for any precious Husband, I have read over and over again. They shall be [illegible] into the treasury, the portion of my heart which I reserve for all such tribute to the dear dead hero whose love & memory are enshrined there,-For the great blackness which the war has cast about me, there is little else that has given cheering and comforting light as words of praise for my husband. In my earliest knowledge of him I beheld what is in him, which when grown and strengthened makes men honored & great. ---- In our married life of nearly eight most happy years, which his great generous heart to me all [unveiled?], so full of earnest life purpose, so eager on the fulfilment of his life's watchword "onward", so fearless and brave-so like a gentle woman in his kindness I have felt, for the world to know him as I know him, would make him what he truly was, " A man among men". And was the sweet incense of praise which come circling around his name from the lips of gifted and honored friends, meets from my heart a warm, quick response, for I know him well hero worthily it is bestowed and then goes out from my heart a blessing upon those who recognize the virtues of him whose name I am so [illegible] to hear, Your candid endorsement of my husband and your disinterested efforts for him were always a matter of pride and gratification to my Husband, and not less so to his wife.

It will certainly be agreeable and a sincere pleasure to me to see Gov Yates ----when he visits Phila if he can find time from his numerous friends here. I will be in at 281 North 12th st until I become established in my Seminary. When that occurs I may trouble you with my circulars. If I have trespassed too long upon your valuable time, I may please plead "not guilty"Your [illegible] kindness having called forth this lengthy intercession.

With sincere respect and warm appreciation of your kindness

My Dear Govenor,
I suspect that upon your suggestion, Mr. Lincoln sent my name to the department of Internal Revenue for the appointment of Assessor for this district as all [illegible] some kind friend of mine must have done so, for the Commissioner wrote Mr. Cook that my name had been sent there by Mr. Lincoln and it must be noticed, how an effort is being made to defeat me. Will you be so kind as to write to the department and suggest my claim, if I have any, and insist on Mr. Lincoln's appointment being carried out. I have no doubt that a letter from you will settle the matter. You might suggest that I was one of the Electors in the last election, [illegible] ---- By giving this matter your early attention you will very much oblige me. I do not know who suggested my name to Mr. Lincoln unless it was yourself.
There is another matter in which I desire your aid. My friend Mr. Alexander Miller, and, by the way, a warm a and influential of yours, got into some trouble in relation to the circulation of some postal currency, drawn into it by the [illegible] without really having been guilty of any wrong. He was arrested and confined in old Capitol Prison. I went to Washington and procured his release. The Detectives got after him again and had him arrested upon the same old charge. Mr. Miller is not in prison now, he is on bail on these charges. Now I will say first that I have known Mr. Miller intimately during the last ten years. And I unhesitatingly say that a more honorable upright man did not live in this community. He is a man of wealth and influence, is true blue Union to the core. Always ready to put his hand to the bottom of his pocket for the good cause, was my best [illegible] in the election last fall and on the election of Gov. Yates to the U. S. Senate last winter, sent the dispatch, "[illegible] County to her Representative, Greeting, well done good and faithful servant, all hail! Dick Yates". He is [English?] and an honest man. Now Govenor I simply want a strong letter from you to Secty Stanton Andy [illegible] or any other man of influence [illegible] suggesting the justice of advising Mr. Bass to enter a [illegible] in his case. Bass will do so on receiving such a suggestion from Washington. I am going there so a letter from you will very much aid me. I must succeed, for I cannot see so noble a man as Aleck Miller sacrificed by a set of cursed detectives. Please write as early as possible and oblige Your true friend W. T Hopkins
