Jacksonville, Ill.

Dr Sir:

In the absence of my father - C. C. Gapen, Esq. of Lacon, Ill - I desire to acknowledge the receipt of the letter of Hon. Mr. Harlan to you, saying that your letter in my father's favor had been "placed on file for future reference." -- and, in addition to whatever my father may have said to you, to thank you for your kind. and strong effort in his behalf --

My father came to the conclusion that future reference meant so far in the future as to imply never, and so has returned to Illinois, where he may meet you. His children and friends were much disappointed in his failing to get a place here thro' the summer, as he is advancing in years, and, having been a life long soldier in the ranks of the Whig and Republican armies - always declining office, it was considered he was most worthy of a small pension for a short time, for his ever strong and ready efforts in the wars for principles. ----

In conversation with Mr. Browne - the Srgt at Arms of the Senate, he was informed that the appointments of doorkeepers [?] of the Senate were given through influence of the Senators & he inferred that his appointment then would and could come through you and he somewhat regretted that he had not asked you for a letter or the Srgt instead of Harlan, - but he would not trouble you further then as he might conclude to return here at the opening of Congress.

Allow me to add that, my father and myself feel just as much obliged to you for your strong letter as though it had not failed in its object.

I congratulate you upon your very flattering but deserving reception by the people of Illinois, and upon the return to their homes of so many of your friends, the brave soldiers of glorious Illinois.

Very Respectfully,

Your truly

Your truly

Please accept my thanks

for forms of the 19th Inft.

Since writing you. I have

learned through a clerk in

the Treasury Dept. Washington

that a letter was forwarded to

Paul Johnson. signed by four

individuals requesting our

removal & the appointment of

Citizens of Tennessee.

The petition was referred

by the Prest to the Secy of the

Treas & by him to Civil Servis.

Judge Travis wrote a strong

protest against our removal

stating that he regarded Mr Smith,

one of my colleagues, & myself as

two of the Ablest & most

faithful officers in the service

of the Dep't

I have recd the Commu-

nication from Judge Travis.

Although I wrote him some

time since. The Judge will

never consent to my removal,

but after the 1st of July he will

not be there & I have no

acquaintince with Mr Astin

his successer.

I presume that a very

strong pressure will be brought

to bear upon the President to

remove us by those in this

state who want the office.

I am preparing to leave

at a moments notice. I have

now eight clerks engaged in

manging the business of the

office so that every thing

will be brought up and

balanced on the 1st prox.

Which is the end of the quarter

and the fiscal year.

If I am removed We

will meet somewhere &

talk over matters.

Please let me hear from

My Dear Governer

Please accept my thanks

for forms of the 19th Inft.

Since writing you. I have

learned through a clerk in

the Treasury Dept. Washington

that a letter was forwarded to

Paul Johnson. signed by four

individuals requesting our

removal & the appointment of

Citizens of Tennessee.

The petition was referred

by the Prest to the Secy of the

Treas & by him to Civil Servis.

Judge Travis wrote a strong

protest against our removal

stating that he regarded Mr Smith,

one of my colleagues, & myself as

two of the Ablest & most

faithful officers in the service

of the Dep't

I have recd the Commu-

nication from Judge Travis.

Although I wrote him some

time since. The Judge will

never consent to my removal,

but after the 1st of July he will

not be there & I have no

acquaintince with Mr Astin

his successer.

I presume that a very

strong pressure will be brought

to bear upon the President to

remove us by those in this

state who want the office.

I am preparing to leave

at a moments notice. I have

now eight clerks engaged in

manging the business of the

office so that every thing

will be brought up and

balanced on the 1st prox.

Which is the end of the quarter

and the fiscal year.

If I am removed We

will meet somewhere &

talk over matters.

Please let me hear from

you at your leisu__

Dear Sir your informing me that you have procured a clerkship in the treasury dept for our friend Mr Searle was recd at my office during my absence in New York. I did not return home until about the 15th & have now to answer it. I feel under obligation to you for your promptness in the matter, and Mr Searle disires me to express to you his gratitude for your kindness. The letter you wrote shortly after procurring the situation for him, was not recd and we had no intimation of it until your last letter was read. Mr. S. in the mean time, became engaged in other business and will not now make any further effort for a clerkship. We are doing scarcly anything else than attending to our returning [illegible]. we are endeavouring to give them a better reception than they recvd at Chicago. They (the [illegible]) feel very indignant at their treatment at the "Great Commercial Emporium" and hereafter, with them it will be enough to know that a man hails from that place. It is to be regretted that the chicagonians took no thought of the matter, but left there to shift for themselves. I hope to hear from you again whenever you have leisure & inclination
And now allow me, in closing, to wish you personally and politically every success
Yours [illegible] John S. Thompson

John S. Thompson as to clerkship no answer necesary

I do not think that Government, or the authorities of this State, intended to impoverish or breake me up when they took my place, but such has been the result, as I owned nothing but that place had nothing to live on but what was there, and it is now nearly four years since every thing I had was sacrifice or distroid, and been living upon expences

I received your truly discouriging letter, but feel it a duty I owe myself and children to prosicute my claim. You tell me; perhaps Mr O H Browning would attend to it for me. You will please let me know where I may direct a letter to him, also when you made that aplication for me, I was not aware that any had been made except the one made by myself to the President. I do not think that Government, or the authorities of this State, intended to impoverish or breake me up when they took my place, but such has been the result, as I owned nothing but that place had nothing to live on but what was there, and it is now nearly four years since every thing I had was sacrifice or distroid, and been living upon expences
