Washington
Sir:
I have the honor to call your attention to some facts connected with this Office to an infamous outrage committed against myself as Provost Marshal, and to the fact that all other Officials of the US Government in this District are liable to similar troubles. The Political Weathercocks, a clique of audacious unprincipled demagogues who came into our party long after it became a power in the land, have been trying for months past to kill off this humble individual - they have petitioned repeatedly the Provost Marshal General and the State [illegible] Colonel Oakes. They succeeded last fall in getting an investigation into the conduct of this Office which resulted to their discomfort

_______

2
An event wholly disconnected with the business of this Office, which transpired in Peoria recently, very much to the chagrin of these fellows who go for whoever promises most, was the occassion of their making another onslaught on this old soldier after great war for freedom who has laboured long years [illegible] pay - hope of [promise? permission?] thereof. They have succeeded through the personal influence of Ingersoll M C in getting me "suspended awaiting investigation." Nothing whatever has occured since the investigation last fall, that furnishes the least ground for complaint against me. Mr. [illegible] Fry telegraphed to Col Oakes last Wednesday or Thursday, directing him to send some one to take my place & this is all I know of the case at this writting. The question arises - Are all holding Government offices in this District subject to the whims, caprices and vengeance of this political charlatain Ingersoll M C. Will this Government - the honored administration of Mr. Lincoln permit a man who came into the

into the party in 1862 on the express promise of being candidate for Congress at large to rule with such despotic power the intents of this Districtship. You will call Mr. Lincoln's attention to these matters.

[illegible] wants [the Post?] officers of Peoria and has abused Mr. Lincoln without [stint?] for not giving it to him. Bob [illegible] a very recent convert to our cause wants Congress at large, District Attorneyship, Consul, or something else. Has Clark wants the Office of Collector for this District. These are the [illegible] spirits of the Clique. Clark is a bitter opponent of Mr. Lincoln calls him a "good for nothing imbecile" You know the man better than I can tell you. Shall they be permitted to run riot with the feelings reputation and intents of good men.

Dear Sir

Doctor W S. Wright a cousin of mine joined the Rebel Army in 1861. Went South leaving his child a little boy in Jackson Co Mo. In the winter of 62-3 that County was devastated. The fiercest and most deadly conflicts occurred there. Dr W advised of this came to St Louis Feby 63 to recover his boy- He was captured-then-and has now been for nearly 2 years confined in prison.

His offense of coming into our lines is a gross one - but what Father will fail to appreciate the motive that prompted him to come- I have assurances

on which I rely implicitly that he has in sentiment and feeling wholly and unequivocally abandoned the Rebellion and [repented?] his false step.

Upon this state of fact I respectfully request that you see President Lincoln and request his release.

The Confederacy is falling to pieces - our flag is everywhere victorious- Mr Lincoln Can afford to be generous

Here with I enclose letter from Maj Gen Prentiss and one from Brig Genl Copeland officers in Charge of Alton Prison

If upon the case as presented you make full [illegible] in aiding in Securing the release of Dr Wright I shall be gratified. and he will

Dear Sir

If upon the case as presented you make full [illegible] in aiding in Securing the release of Dr Wright I shall be gratified. and he will

long remember and highly appreciate your Kindness

I have the honor to be Sir Respectfully
Truly Yours

Honorable sir
Knowing the interest you always have taken

especially them from Illinois. I take the liberty of
writing this letter, hoping that you will not be offended
And that I may not ask your assistance in vain
As I well know that only one word from you, will

Please have patience enough to read the following
I enlisted in the same Battery G. 2d. Ills Art. the 6th of august 1861
And reenlisted in the same Battery about new years
1864. And during the whole time of my service to
the present time have always done my duty
And been along with the battery in every engage
ment and Campaign it has gone through since it
first was organized. But of late my health has been
very poor. so the long marches and hardships we

Now have to go through comes very hard upon
me. And as I do not want to report myself sick
or unfit for duty. I suffer a great deal. Others
under the same circumstances or for less cause would
either go to some Hospital or be transferred to the invalid
Corps but as I do not wish to do either, I would humbly
ask your honor to have me transferred to some
Seagoing man of war. For I think that if i got on
salt water again I would regain my usual strenght
which I had before I come in the army, and of
which I now for a long time have feeled the loss
of. I am a native of Sweeden and have been for
a long time on the Sea before. So I am not
ignorant of the work to be done there.
Honorable sir please do me this favor and receive
the thanks of a private that now have nearly
served the country 4 years and have 2 more
to serve. I should not have written this letter
But as a last resource to recover my lost healthAnd as we all know you honors kindness to the
Soldiers I hope my prayer may not pass
unnoticed, as my all depends upon your kind-
ness

Please send an answer as soon as possible as we
very seldom stay long in one place. And forgive me
for wrting this letter. And oblige your humble

Col Smith was in the Army for some time & left on account of sickness - for the last year he has been at home & has done valuable service in stirring up a loyal spirit among the people. He made the canvas last fall for the senate in his district and our friends are much indebted to him for the energy & enthusiasm with which he conducted the Campaign. I hope he may receive the appointment desired. Yours truly

From an acquaintance with Col Smith of several years I cheerfully endorse the within recommendation believing that should he receive the appointment he will make an efficient officer giving satisfaction to the Government and people I trust he may succeed in his application

Horace Capron
Raised his cavalry regiment in Illinois in 1862 at a period the most difficult for recruiting. The formation of his regiment was commenced as the 18th Illinois but went into service as the 14th. All the attempts at organization of the Regiments under the intermediate numbers having failed though authorized six months previous to General Capron's earliest efforts. In the fields he commanded his 1st Brigade under General Judoh in pursuit of John Morgan, was 26 days in the saddle, at the battle of Buffington Islands, and at Morgan's capture and was one of the field officers who accompanied General Shackelford to Cincinnati to deliver the prisoners to General Burnsides. (see Burnside's and Shackleford's Reports) Went into Knoxville Tennessee with the advanced guards of General Burnside's Army, and the first Federal picket for that city. Served through the whole campaign, participating in nearly every battle,

and at its close, was ordered back to Kentucky to remount and re-arm several Regiments. On General Stoneman being ordered to the front General Capron was left in command of the forces, and on completing his reorganization joined General Sherman's command near Chattanooga where he was complimented for the fine appearance of his men after so long a march. Went immediately into active service with the army of General Sherman and served through the campaign in all the battles to the taking of Atlanta where General Capron furnished the advanced guards of the 20th Corps from his old regiment, driving the enemy's cavalry through the city. (see General Ward's Report) Was selected by General Stoneman to command a Brigade called "Capron's Brigade" in his famous raid through Georgia. Was with General Stoneman at his capture, but with about 300 men General Capron cut through the enemies lines being closely pressed for six days succeeded in reaching the Federal lines at Marietta Georgia

when he was complimented in a dispatch from General Sherman upon his safe arrival through so many difficulties and dangers, he was then ordered back to Kentucky with five Regiments to remount and re-arm but had scarcely reached there when he was ordered to report to General Thomas at Nashville, and was sent by General Schofield to Wainesborough to cover the right of Columbia (see Thomas' Report and Report of Secretary of War) Met Hood's advanced guard at that place. skirmishes and slowly fell back before the enemy. holding him in check for two nights and one day to allow General Schofield's time to fall back from Pulaski on Columbia and was driven into that place followed closely by the enemy. meeting General Schofield's advanced guards coming through the city on double quick to form line of battle.(see Schofield's Report). Was injured in a night charge at the battle before Franklin and after the relief of Nashville resigned on Surgeons Certificate of disability from that injury being then unfit for service.

General Capron had three sons who entered the service at the opening of the War. The eldest was killed at the head of his command in the charge upon the enemy after having received a medal of honor with the most honorable mention, and been once promoted for his gallantry. The second son was made prisoner and taken to Charleston, South Carolina. Neither of the surviving sons has yet recovered from the effects of exposure and hardship on the field and in rebel prisons

Hon R Yates

Dr Sir

Probably you will remember that in the spring of 1861 you recommended me by letter to be appointed to the position I now hold that of United States Atty for Washington Territory. Considering Illinois almost my native State having resided there from 1844 to 1861, and now living in a Territory which of Course has no political influence, I hesitate less than perhaps I otherwise might to ask a still further favor. One of the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of this Territory an old man from Uniontown Penn is about to return east and will not be an applicant for reappointment. That place will therefore be vacent and I am desirous of obtaining it. Mr Lincoln is better acquainted with me then you are and I think is quite well disposed toward me but you know how it is with him in these matters being pressed on all sides and at all times. If you are disposed to name the matter to the President I will reciprocate in any way I can, but how that will be I have not the slightest idea at present, unless you acept the old equity rule of the will for the deal.

But if the President is not disposed to give me

that position he would confer a great favor upon the people here by sending some good lawyer to fill it. We have but one man on the bench in this Territory who can justly lay any claim to being a respectable lawyer and that is Wyche. The want of ability and fitness for positions on the part of the great majority of the Officers sent here has done more to weaken the administration party and strengthen the opposition than all other courses combined, and the result is today that both branches of our Territorial Legislation is Copperhead to the [backbone?].

I have already written more then I had intended and perhaps wearied your patience & therefore I will close this hasty letter, only remarking in addition, that if there is any information I can give you of or concerning this extreme north west [const?] that you are desirous of, and will indicate in what particulars, it will afford me pleasure to convey it if possible.

I am Your Obt. Svnt

Svnt

Dear Sir
From all I can learn, I have been regarded as a tolerably useful member of the Directory of the Deaf and Dumb Asylum. I know that I have tried to do my duty in the premises, and am somewhat proud of the substantial record which I have been assisting to make in and about the Institution. The position is hardly worth asking for, but still I would be gratified to receive at the hands of your successor a reappointment. It makes one feel better you know, to find that his acts in any capacity of usefulness are approved by those in authority. Governor Oglesby can have no sincerer friend, or one who will endeavor, by an intelligent performance of duty, to reflect honor and credit upon his administration. I very much regretted my inability to be present at your home reception. You ought to be a happy man. Do you realize the proud career which lies open before you? How fervently every pulse throbs for your success! God preserve you and make you a blessing to your country. Faithfully yours John R. Woods

My object in writing to you at the present is this, The People are very anxious to Raise a Reg. in our City. We are situated in the Center of the State, And have every thing requisite,so that it will cost the state nothing, Except transportation. Our Barracks are quite sufficient and in good condition.
