Dear Sir
I am confined in jail in this city charged with a crime of which I am entirely innocent. I am a resident of the City of New York. I am an orphan and without relations. I have served two years and thirty days in the service of the United States and have been twice honorably discharged on the expiration of my term of service. I have participated in the following actions, at the taking of Fort Hatteral and Fort Clark the seven days battles before Richmond, Bristoe and Catletts stations, 2nd Bull Run, the two battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorville. I am now only eighteen years of age and willing to serve my country again in the field. but to be locked up here like a dog in a kenned charged with a crime that I never committed is hard and cruel, I am a stranger in the west, and have no friends, hoping that you will aid a suffering soldier, I remain your obedient servant.

me. I was introduced to you by Hon William

my property by having to pay debts for other

people I now desire to get an appointment

to a clerkship at Washington and respectfully

ask you for a letter of recommendation

I have done as much and made as great

sacrifice to sustain the government as any

man in the State of my means I have two

upon the Government

Now Gov will you be kind enough to write

Dear Gov'r

I have been waiting here since

Wednesday to see you. You may not recollect

me. I was introduced to you by Hon William

Kellogg at Washington two years ago

and in company with yourself the Judge

Marshall [Lamon?] and Hon [O.?] M. Hatch

we went up to [Grovers?] Theater

I have been unfortunate and lost most of

my property by having to pay debts for other

people I now desire to get an appointment

to a clerkship at Washington and respectfully

ask you for a letter of recommendation

I have done as much and made as great

sacrifice to sustain the government as any

man in the State of my means I have two

sons in the army one in the 33 near New

in the 64th with Sherman in Georgia

I therefore feel that I have some claims

upon the Government

Now Gov will you be kind enough to write

as strong a letter as you consistantly can and

forward the same to me at Macomb

Respectfully Your

Obt Servant

A. C. Wiley

I enclose a recommendation of Judge Kellogg

and Judge Trumbull to a former paper

which I did not use will you be kind

to return the same to me with the letter

I most cheerfully concur in the above

energetic republican. a gentleman in

every way well qualified for the

position he desires. a man of integrity

and high moral standing in

the community in which he lives

and one who has contributed liberally

money for the success of the republican

cause, and if anyone is entitled to

consideration in the bestowment of

                    <text>
Chicago Jany 13th 1865
Friday Morning
My very dear Mrs Yates
I arrived home safely at half past ten o'clock the evening of the day I parted from your hospitable mansion, with the consciousness of having enjoyed one of the pleasantest visits of my life. As you are aware we had the pleasure of the Governor's company, the Judges and Mr. Babcocks to the [junction?]. The [Deacon?] ([Bacso?]) in whose charge the Governor kindly put Mrs. Forest and myself was entertaining and polite and though we were a little behind time we got along nicely. I fancied that you arrived in Jacksonville about the same time of our arrival in Chicago. I fear that you

after your laborious cares and anxieties attendant upon your change of home, are suffering from fatigue and over exertion. I hope that this is not the case, and that with your dear family, you may be at present in much better health than when I parted from you. I congratulate you upon your return to your own pleasant home in Jacksonville and to the bosom of those beloved friends who are as deservedly dear.

I find a noted French head dress maker here who resides on the north side. She is to have ready three or four head dresses tomorrow noon for me to select from for you. I think she will make something stylish and pretty. I shall arrange with her to take back. or alter it, if you should so desire. Instead of sending it by

express, I think I will send the box by Dr. Burroughs or some one who will be going directly to Springfield and Jacksonville. Mr. Wooduth is very anxious to accept you and the Governors polite invitation to be present and if it is among the possibilities to do so he will surely be present. I am very much hoping myself also to be with you, but I have fears that I may not be able. I shall surely be with you in heart.

My kindest love and regards to your dear mother and Sister to Katie and Henry and all friends with you, not forgetting a big hug and kiss to my darling Dickey.

I should have said in connection with head dresses, that it seems that pearl ornaments for them or the hair are not now considered stylish.

We are all well and all unite in love to you and your dear family. [illegible]
[Evr affecty]
A.L.B. Wooduth

                <text>

A.L.B. Wooduth

Hon Richd Yates

Dear Sir:

You are aware that our mutual friend, Isaac L Morrison, would like to get the appointment of U S Atty for the Southern Dist of Ills.

We can say nothing more in his favor than you personally know, and it is therefore useless for us to go into any extended statement in regard to him. It is enough to say that his qualifications as a lawyer are disputed by none; his character as a man is irreproachable; and his devotion to the principles of our party, manifested on all proper occasions, entitle him to generous consideration in this matter.

We know Mr. Morrison will not make personal efforts in Washington, and we therefore respectfully request you to urge his appointment on the President: We insist that Mr. Weldon the present incumbent has no special claims upon the party, and certainly none on you since the late Senatorial Strife, which entitle him to continuance in the office for another term. You are the representative of the people, and more fully embody their views and wishes as expressed in your very triumphal election over Mr Weldons particular favorite and friend, and we insist that you have more right to speak in this matter than any one else, and Mr. Lincoln

will of necessity recognize you as entitled to more influence than any other. We therefore respectfully urge upon you the importance of securing this valuable, and useful appointment to one of your true and tried friends.

Mr. Weldon has no right to take exceptions to your course in so doing, for he certainly knows you are aware of his opposition to yourself in the senatorial election, not boldly and openly perhaps but not the less opposed. On the contrary Mr. Morrison has been for 10 or 12 years a well tried and unwavering friend, and we do not think we speak extravagantly when we say his claims upon the party are at least equal to those of Mr. Weldon.

It is therefore the earnest desire of your friends whose names are below, that you will spare no exertions consistent with your position and feelings to procure Mr. Morrison the appointment which he desires and deserves.

To begin with, however, I don't believe you have so committed yourself, irrespective of the wishes of your friends of this City & have just so affirmed the present incumbant, Wm. Allin.

I profess to know something about public sentiment of the place in reference to Wm Allin's administration of the office and the desire of the people for his retention, and, So far as I know, I do assure you, that about all our political friends, especially as among those favorable to your election to the Senate, are for Wm Allin against the world, for this position. And there are good reasons why this should be the case.

3rd His eminent fitness for the position. Of high moral worth, integrity above suspicion, accommodating to a fault, he has drawn around him a host of friends, that no other man can to the same extent, I am quite sure.

4th His long continued & meritorious Servises politically, first in the Old Whig Party, then in the (Radical) Repubican and recently in the Union party. For four years he has been chairman of the County Central Com. and has done about all the labors of that Committee. For the last 4 years he has performed more political labor, and, in proportion to his means, has spent more money five times over, than any man in the County. I need not say, he has ever been one of your warmest friends and admirers. Where the late remonstrance against you was started in this place, he circulated the petition for you.

I will not further tax your patience by assigning reasons why he should be continued, but to show you how popular he is in this community will state the circumstances attending his appointment 4 years ago.
