&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have been requested by some of my friends in Cairo &amp;amp; vicinity to apply to your excellency for the appointment of Provost Marshall for this District under the last conscription Act of Congress.  If your Honor thinks me worthy of the position &amp;amp; will give me the appointment I pledge myself to discharge the duties of the office to the best of my ability &amp;amp; I think that my experience in the army will give me a decided advantage over some other persons who have made application for the appointment.  &amp;amp; as it is reported the appointments are to be made of persons who have been disabled

&lt;p&gt;in the service.  If this be true surely I will stand a pretty good chance for being appointed. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have been requested by some of my friends in Cairo &amp;amp; vicinity to apply to your excellency for the appointment of Provost Marshall for this District under the last conscription Act of Congress.  If your Honor thinks me worthy of the position &amp;amp; will give me the appointment I pledge myself to discharge the duties of the office to the best of my ability &amp;amp; I think that my experience in the army will give me a decided advantage over some other persons who have made application for the appointment.  &amp;amp; as it is reported the appointments are to be made of persons who have been disabled 
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;p&gt;in the service.  If this be true surely I will stand a pretty good chance for being appointed.  I send no recommendations though I could get them but I presume it unnecessary as there is a number of recommendations filed in your office from various persons recommending me for different positions in the army.  I hope that the loss of my right arm will not prevent me from being appointed.

Would he not make a good Provos Marshall for our district!

&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dear Sir inclosed please find a letter to me from a friend now in Ohio who left here the last of Feby for Ohio to purchace young Cattle for grazeing the coming season. You will see from his letter that he has become some what alarmed about his safe return home without a pass from your Hon
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Mr Jackson V Smith has resided in this place some Eight Years owns a farm in this County of 160 acres land, and wishes to return here as soon as sufficient grass comes
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Will you have the kindness to send me a pass for him 
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I can assure you that he is a worthy citizen of the State of Illinois.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You will confer a very great favor by giving this your Early attention
