1. There's a voice within me singing, I can hear the echo ringing, Illinois, Illinois will always be my home. Nowhere are the skies more blue, Nowhere are the friends more true; Illinois Illinois will always be my home.

2. Violets in springtime peeping, Tiny seeds are sown for reaping, Fields of gold, fields of gold when harvest days are come. When thy plains lie deep in snow, And thy happy hearth fires glow, Illinois Illinois will always be my home.

3. Unexcelled thy higher learning, Wheels of industry e'er turning, Need for wealth, need for wealth, thy children ever roam. In thy heart are mines and oil, Streams refresh thy fertile soil, Illinois Illinois will always be my home.

4. Loyal sons to duty calling, Brave and true they fought, and falling, Lie in graves, lie in graves today where poppies bloom. When I reach the great divide, May I in thy bosom abide; Illinois Illinois will always be my home.

When the nation called for service Thou didst ever bear thy part.
Bright thy streams and broad thy prairies, Rich the harvests we enjoy,
Freedom's soil is thine, we love thee, Illinois, our Illinois.

Say we Lincoln, then say Willard Both were liberators true.
Sons and daughters stand together Equal still in rights and joy,
Thus thou art well named, the Great Ones, Illinois, our Illinois.

1. Illinois! in high endeavor This was e'er the loyal heart;
When the nation called for service Thou didst ever bear thy part.
Bright thy streams and broad thy prairies, Rich the harvests we enjoy,
Freedom's soil is thine, we love thee, Illinois, our Illinois.

2. Illinois! thy name means "Great Men," Great thy helpmates have been, too:
Say we Lincoln, then say Willard Both were liberators true.
Sons and daughters stand together Equal still in rights and joy,
Thus thou art well named, the Great Ones, Illinois, our Illinois.

The official state song Illinois , although written just prior to the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, was not so designated until June 30, 1925, by the Illinois State Legislature. The song was written by Charles H. Chamberlin, a veteran of the Civil War, wounded at Gaines Mill. The music, by Archibald Johnson, was adapted from a popular song which he wrote several year earlier. The song was introduced at a reunion of the Army of the Potomac in Chicago, with President McKinley as the speaker. The President called it "a song that will never die." A verse of the song is engraved on Chamberlin's tombstone in Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois. The bill which was to make Illinois the official state song was introduced in the State Senate by Florence Fifer Bohrer, daughter of the late Governor Joseph W. Fifer. She was the first woman to serve in the Illinois Senate.

By thy rivers gently flowing Illinois, Illinois, By thy prairies verdant growing, Illinois, Illinois, Comes an echo on the breeze Rustling through the leafy trees, And its mellow tones are these, Illinois, Illinois, And its mellow tones are these, Illinois.

2.
Not without thy wondrous story, Illinois, Illinois, Can be writ the nation's glory, Illinois, Illinois, On the record of the years, Abr'ham Lincoln's name appears, Grant and Logan and our tears, Illinois, Illinois, Grant and Logan and our tears, Illinois.

3.
Eighteen eighteen saw your founding, Illinois, Illinois, And your progress is unbounding, Illinois, Illinois, Pioneers once cleared the land Where great industries now stand. World renown you do command, Illinois, Illinois World renown you do command, Illinois.

4. Let us pledge in final chorus, Illinois, Illinois, That in struggles still before us, Illinois, Illinois, To our hero we'll be true As their vision we pursue In a bidding love for you, Illinois, Illinois, In a bidding love for you, Illinois.

<text>The Chicago Drainage Collection documents the construction of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal during the 1890s and early 1900s. The canal serves as a shipping link between the Great Lakes Waterway and the Missisippi River and it carries Chicago's sewage to the Des Plaines River.

Construction on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal began in 1889 with the creation of the Municipal Sanitary District in response to fears that sewage pumped into the Chicago River and into Lake Michigan would contaminate the city's drinking water. The canal also served as a replacement for the narrower and shallower Illinois and Michigan Canal. Canal construction ran under the leadership of chief engineer Isham Randolph from September 3, 1892, known as "Shovel Day," until January 2, 1900, when water was first released into the canal.

During the construction process, engineers successfully and permanently reversed the flow of the Chicago River, enabling it to carry waste water away to the Mississippi River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. Admiral George Dewey dedicated the canal on May 2, 1900. Additional construction extending the canal to Joliet ran from 1903-1907.

Photographs in this collection include images of the construction of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Bear Trap Dam at the base of the canal in Lockport, Illinois. Other images include Admiral Dewey's visit to dedicate the waterway as well as before and after images of the empty and filled canal.</text>

Sir: I was struck with horror when I heard the news of Mr. Lincoln’s death. The illustrious genius and worthy magistrate did not live to enjoy the glory of his great deeds. The abominable crime of his death ought to be avenged. Justice will be done, but unfortunately the most guilty will not receive it; but they will wither like the weeds in barren fields. His memory will be venerated by all nations living; and generations to be born will yield him homage. Bash assassins have spilled a precious blood; but it will cry aloud from earth for vengeance, and its voice will be heard afar.

Horrid slavery is no more. Europe rejoices at it; let the world rejoice. A new order of events will rise, and men will be blessed whose hopes had almost vanished. The black has a right to enjoy liberty as well as life; and now he has it in America.

May the successor of the deceased be worthy of his place, and finish the labor to be done; then the world will chant a chorus of gloria in excelsis, in populo supremo. Amen.

The Federal Writers' Project provided employment opportunities for historians, teachers, writers, librarians, and other white-collar workers. Initially the project produced guidebooks entitled American Guide on several regions of the country with an emphasis on the the country's scenic, historical, cultural, and economic resources. The Illinois Writers' Project, the state office for the Federal Writers' Project, produced state-wide guidebooks as well as regional publications which included work by Richard Wright, Saul Bellow, Margaret Walker, and Louis "Studs" Terkel.

The photographs contained in this collection include images of farm life in southern Illinois, Chicago architecture, Greek-American life in Chicago's Greektown, and historic buildings and architecture throughout the state.
"In Memoriam Abraham Lincoln" * National Chant. (*The Soprano, containing the melody, may be sung as a Solo throughout the whole of the Chant.)

Words by W. Dexter Smith, Jr.

Music by M. Keller.

Chorus.

Columbia weeps! Columbia weeps! Her cherished son, Who struck her fetters to the ground, Who saved the land of Washington, Has passed from earth's most distant bound; Has passed from earth's most distant bound;

Soprano Solo.

His spirit went to realms on high, His dust, alone, the earth could claim, His memory will never die While freemen live to bless his name, His memory will never die While freemen live to bless his name.

Solo Quartett.

Columbia swears, anew, her vow To guard the birthright of the free; Unsheathed her sword of Justice, now Since Mercy, since Mercy, since Mercy fell by Tyranny.

Solo.

Our nations hopes and fears alike Are with the land our fathers trod, And while for Freedom, now, we strike, Our future is alone with God! And while for Freedom, now, we strike, Our future is alone with God! alone with God!

Chorus.

Our nations hopes and fears alike Are with the land our fathers trod, And while we now, for Freedom strike, Our future is alone with God! And while we, now, for Freedom strike, Our future is alone with God! alone with God!

In the bottom panel, a man rushes in carrying papers labeled "Tariff Bill" and "Speeches" when Doctor Congress calls "Next!".

The Bonus Bill, or the World War Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924, sought to reward veterans of the First World War with cash compensation based on their tour of service. The act saw extreme debate in the House and Senate in 1921, culminating in the 1922 bill. President Warren G. Harding (1921-1923) vetoed the measure. Likewise, Harding's successor, Calvin Coolidge (1923-1929) vetoed another measure on May 15, 1924, but Congress overrode the president, passing the Bonus Bill. At the time, Republicans like Harding and Coolidge pushed for tariff increases with a vigor that political cartoonist John T. McCutcheon felt should be reserved for the veterans of World War I.</text>

<text>An Illinois native, Kent E. Keller began his working career as a school teacher and principal in Ava, Illinois, before becoming a lawyer and eventually working in the mining industry in the western United States and Mexico. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He unsuccessfully campaigned for re-election in ever election between 1940-1948 with the exception of 1946 when he was in Mexico as a special adviser to the United States Ambassador.

Kent E. Keller's papers are part of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library collection. The finding aid for this collection may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/369.

Photographs in this collection include images of miners at work on several projects including the construction of Mount Rushmore, the Lincoln Tunnel, Skyline Drive, and Radio City Music Hall; oil well drilling; and family photos.</text>
