Henry's son, William, platted out the town and made land donations for churches, a school, and a city jail. In 1886 the hopital began serving as a training school for nurses. The institute became the Kankakee State Hospital in 1910 after the abolishment of the Board of State Commissioners of Public Charities. The hospital operated under the Department of Public Welfare beginning in 1917 until the Department of Mental Health's establishment in 1961. In 1974, the hospital became a treatment center for developmentally disabled patients and all other patients were transferred to other hospitals. At that time the hospital was renamed the Samuel H. She attended elementary school in Mississippi (1916-1922) and high school and junior college in Chicago after her family moved to Illinois in 1923. She received her diploma from Provident Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and degrees in Public Health Nursing from Loyola University (B.S. 1942) and in Administration and Supervision from the University of Chicago (M.S., 1954). Ms. Durham attended Tuskegee Nurse-Midwifery School in Alabama and did graduate coursework at Illinois Teachers College (1958-1965) and Roosevelt University (1965). Her forty-five year professional career included positions as staff and public health nurse, nursing school teacher/supervisor, consultant in maternal and child health and in personal and public service occupations, elementary/adult education teacher and librarian. She worked at such private and public organizations as nurse midwifery schools, Chicago Department of Health, U.S. Children’s Bureau, National League for Nursing, Illinois State Board of Vocational Education and Rehabilitation and the East Central Curriculum Management Center. Ms. Durham retired from the Illinois Office of Education in June 1978. She worked briefly on an educational research project at Eastern Illinois University, July 1978-June 1979. She was active in several community and religious organizations including: Senior Learners Program, Sangamon State University, American Nurses Association, NAACP, Springfield Urban League, Gray Panthers, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, and Project Area Agency on Aging. Army American Civil War (1861-1865) Description An account of the resource John McAuley Palmer was born in Scott County, Kentucky in 1817. His family emigrated to Illinois in 1831, settling near Alton. Palmer entered Shurtleff College 1834 where he stayed two years. He moved to Carlinville in 1839 and read law in office of John S. Greathouse before admittance to the bar in 1839. Palmer was elected as a delegate to the 1847 Illinois Constitutional Convention. Palmer was elected as probate judge of Macoupin County in 1843. He won election to the Illinois State Senate in 1852 and served until 1856. Palmer helped form the Republican Party in Illinois, serving as President of the Bloomington Convention in May 1856 and as a delegate to the Republican National Convention at Philadelphia in June. Palmer was defeated as a Republican candidate for Representative to Congress. Palmer began his military career in May 1861 as Colonel of the Fourteenth Illinois Infantry. He received the rank of Brigadier-General in December 1861, commanding the 1st Division of Army of Mississippi at Stone River and Chickamauga. He was rewarded with the rank of Major-General and served Military Commander of District of Kentucky, 1865-1866. After his time in the military Palmer practiced law in Springfield with Milton Hay beginning in 1867. Palmer was elected Governor of Illinois on Republican ticket in 1868. He joined Liberal Republican Party in 1872 and soon after the Democratic Party. Palmer ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for Governor in 1888. He won election to the United States Senate, serving from 1891-1897. After his time in the Senate, Palmer returned to private life in 1897 where he edited Bench and Bar in Illinois (1899) and wrote Personal Recollections (1901). Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. To his Excellency Andrew Johnson,  President of the United States: Sir: At a public meeting, held in the public hall, Colchester, Essex, England, on Thursday evening, May 4th, 1865, it was— Resolved, That this meeting has heard with the profoundest regret the sad and mournful news of the assassination of President Lincoln, a man whose life was of such great value, not only to the American people, but to all free people everywhere, and desires to express its sincerest sympathy and condolence with the government and people of the United States in the distressing bereavement they have sustained, and their deep abhorrence of the diabolical deed by which so precious a life has been sacrificed. It nevertheless desires to express its firm conviction that the work begun and so nobly carried on by Abraham Lincoln, in connexion with slavery, can lever be undone, and it trusts that you, his successor, will effect the work, both of the extinction of slavery and the reconstruction of the Union. That this meeting desires to express its gratitude to Divine Providence that he attempted assassination of Mr. Seward has not been successful, and hopes that he will be spared to render valuable service in the utter extinction of slavery and the complete reconstruction of the Union.
