<text>
Columbus Ky July 26th 1864-

To His Excellency Richard Yates,

Governor of the State of Illinois,

As a citizen of Chicago, Illinois, I take the liberty of stating to you some of the grievances suffered by me at the hands of the ruling military authorities at this Post.

On the 30th day of March last I was arrested and imprisoned in the Military Prison at this Post, by order of Col Wm H. Lawrence Commander of the Post and Colonel of the 34th New Jersey Regt, and therein confined for the space of twenty two days when I was released by order of Gen Brayman on a Bond of two thousand dollars conditioned that I should not leave the City of Columbus without permission of the General Comd'g, In compliance with this order and Bond I am still held a prisoner at this Post.

The cause of my Imprisonment as above set forth I am unable to state. I have repeatedly and from the first asked for charges, for a hearing, or trial and for the privilege of Bail. All have hitherto been denied me although nearly four months have elapsed since my first imprisonment and I know of no cause for the treatment I have received other than

the prejudice and malice of the said Col Lawrence towards me incured by my having defended as an Attorney several of the Officers of the said Colonel's Regt whom he has deemed it his duty to have arrested and Court Martialed. In addition to this I was accounted by the said Colonel, a friend of Capt J H Williams, formerly Pro Marshal of this District ags whom the said Colonel was strongly prejudiced. And who together with several others, Soldiers and citizens were arrested at the same time, and against whom, except the said Capt Williams, no charges have been prefered. For the space of more than two weeks my wife then in Columbus was not permitted to see me and not at all until an order to that effect was obtained from Gen Brayman. At the expiration of Seventeen days of my Imprisonment the said Col Lawrence sent a messenger to me, in prison, who most gravely informed me that the said Colonel had said to him that he had procured enough evidence against me and the said Capt to send us both to the Penitentiary, but if I would come out of prison and tell all that I knew agst the said Capt it should be kept a secret and I should be released. In reply I stated that I would willingly tell all that I knew ags the said Capt Williams, but stating at the same time that I knew nothing criminal agt him, but I would answer fully faithfully and truly concerning any matter about which he might inquire and

further that if the said Colonel would give me a hearing I would convince him I was guilty of no crime and ought not to be imprisoned. To this proposal on my part the said Colonel gave no attention and I was still kept in prison until released as aforesaid. For about ten months previous to my Imprisonment I had as a Lawyer practised in the different Military Courts in Session at this Post, and always with the assent and approval of the Courts and the Military Authorities of the District including Gen A J Smith Gen Asboth & Major Rowley formerly Dist Pro Marshal. I am now and always have been an unconditional Union man. I have done no disloyal act and have done much to aid the Union cause by way of recruiting and otherwise. In proof of my character & history in this regard I would refer you to Col Hinchbach of your Staff, Col Salomon, Hon I N Arnold and Elliott Anthony or any other loyal man of Chicago who knows me. Since the issuing of the above mentioned order by Gen Brayman giving me the limits of the Post---I have been wholly unable to obtain any action in my case on the part of the Military Authorities of this District. Gen [Prince?] the Successor to Gen Brayman has wholly refused to act in the case.

It is painfully humiliating to a loyal citizen to to recount such grievances and indignities at the hands of the Military Authorities of his country.

Such treatment naturally presupposes some great crime. I solemnly aver that I am wholly innocent of any---but I am still held a prisoner "a criminal without a crime" an accusation or an accuser. I can learn of no one who complains of having been wronged or injured by me. I have been condemned without a hearing and punished without a trial. In the hope of obtaining at least tardy Justice at the hands of the Military Authorities of this District I have waited thus long before appealing to you.

By a fair trial I am certain of an aquital For the sake of a reputation which I have kept hitherto without the stain of reproach I desire most of all such a trial. To this I am entitled, rightfully and lawfully,-

If by your high position and deservedly great influence with the higher Authorities of our Government you can obtain for me a trial and if not an immediate trial my Release, on Bail if need be, to meet any charges which shall in future be prefered, you will confer a good favor on a loyal and injured citizen of your State.

I am Governor

Respectfully Yours

Ira W Buell

Buell Ira W.

                <text>

Ira W Buell

My official duties here rendered it impossible for me to be [about?] at that time and I was therefore under the necessity of declining the appointment , which I, at once, did by a note to Lt Gov Hoffman in order that my place on the council might not remain vacant. An appointment without solicitation to a position an honorable as it [would?] have been agreeable, so handsomely and flatteringly tendered[had?] by one who has always [illegible] first and foremost in my regards is I assure you Governor an honor which I most gratefully appreciate and for which I beg to tender to you my sincere thanks. It was a matter of regret which was that I care & not accept the position and afraid in the discharge of its duties, but you will readily realize the validity of my reasons for its declination.

Should the legislature meet again in June and perhaps whether it does or not, I may have the pleasure of meeting you and conferring more fully upon this or with [illegible]some other matters

I am [illegible][illegible]very truly

Your friend Ira Wilkinson

His Excl.
Governor Yates.

Sir: We, on behalf of our countrymen resident here, hasten to render, through you, to the American people, our profound sympathy with them under the heavy affliction they have sustained in being deprived of their deeply lamented and much beloved President.

We fondly hoped that he would have enjoyed for the full term that position and those honors which a grateful country had conferred on him, and that, in the increased happiness and prosperity of the United States, he would have seen the desires of his great and generous soul realized and continued on a scale commensurate with the high destiny and splendid fortunes of the American republic.

It must be consoling, under this bereavement, to recall that it was reserved for him to see his country emerge, great and glorious, from the perils which menaced her existence as a nation, and thus disappoint the anticipations of those who desired her dismemberment.

We feel proud that our countrymen have contributed to this great result, and proved, by their fidelity and heroism, that valor and gratitude are among the many virtues which Irishmen cultivate and extend to their friends and benefactors in whatever position they may be placed, whether in social or military life.

As good citizens, they have been true to the national cause, and we refer, with especial satisfaction, to those among them whose names will enter into the history of your great republic, associated with its principles, hallowed by its sacrifices, and identified with its glory.

We beg you, sir, to be the interpreter of our feelings to the American people, and to assure them that our attachment has been unalterable, neither springing from expediency nor inspired by self-interest, but that it is the warm impulse of a people whose generous sensibilities are among the most prominent of their national characteristics.

Signed on behalf of a meeting of the Irishmen of London, held at the Arundel Hall, Arundel street, Strand, on Monday, the 1st of May, 1865.

Horner was committed to cleaning up corruption in the Chicago-run Democratic Party machine. An expert on Abraham Lincoln, Horner was an avid collector of Lincoln artifacts and papers. Governor Horner also holds the honor of being Illinois's first Jewish governor.

Items in this collection include portraits of Governor Horner, images from President Franklin D. Peithmann explored Native American occupation sites in southern Illinois leading to the Southern Illinois University Museum curator placing Peithmann in charge of the organization's Native American collections in 1949. His career focused on studying archaeology remains from pre-historic Native Americans in southern Illinois. Peithmann discovered the Modoc Rock Shelter in 1951 containing skeletons over 11,000 years old. Peithmann also worked with the Seminole Indians in Florida, helping them create a memorial to Osceola. During his career, Peithmann published several books on Native Americans in the United States. Peithmann received the Distinguished Service Award from Southern Illinois University in 1975.

Photographs in this collection include several images of Peithmann's collection at the Southern Illinois University Museum.</text>

<text>David Davis, a lawyer, politician, distinguished jurist and businessman, was born in Maryland, educated at Kenyon College in Ohio, and studied law at Yale University. Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis.

In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago.

In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis served as Senate president pro tempore from 1881 to 1883, and was known unofficially as "Mr. Vice President." He retired from the Senate in 1883.

Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. At the time of his death, June 26, 1886, his estate was valued between four to five million dollars-a huge fortune in his day.

The finding aid for the David Davis Family Papers at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/165.

Photographs in this collection include portraits of several members of the David Davis and George P. Davis families. The collection also includes portraits of Judge Davis' law colleagues, images of Bloomington, Illinois, and photographs of miscellaneous buildings throughout the United States.</text>

The police arrested five plantation workers, whom Massie positively identified. Plantations workers tended to be any combination of Japanese, Chinese, Native Hawaiian, Pilipino, and Portuguese, and many believe she accused them based on their race.
