B., moderator, in the chair, it was Resolved unanimously, That at this our first meeting since the lamented death of the honorable Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America, we feel called upon to record our detestation of the atrocious crime by which he was suddenly cut off in the midst of his days and his usefulness; our participation in the sorrow of the members of his family under the loss which they have thus sustained; and our sympathy with the people of the United States, deprived of a high-minded Chief Magistrate, at the very moment when his invincible firmness and undaunted fortitude had been rewarded with success more complete than usually attends on the wisest of human counsels; and when, from his high character, there was every reason to expect that moderation in victory, and that merciful consideration towards a vanquished enemy, which, accompanying the glorious emancipation of the slave, would have forever associated the name of Lincoln with that of Washington as marking the introduction of a new and happy era in the history of his country. That we desire to express our earnest hope that the government and people of the United States will employ their utmost efforts to consummate their great victory in the manner most consistent with Christian principle, most accordant with the soundest policy, and best corresponding with the dignity of a great and magnanimous nation.
