<text>
[1860] Saturday evening
Hon Richard Yates
My dear sir your kind note came to hand this evening. I cannot doubt that you are quite right in characterizing the [questions?] of the races as "the great [questions?]" It will be found "the great [questions?]" practically, whether we look at it as philosophers, as statesmen or as divines. And in my humble opinion as you move these intricate, no [means?] will be found prepared to act with his hart in either capacity - in any part of the civilized world till he has most deeply pondered these great questions of the ages: the question of the races. But with us Americans in every relation & hope of social life, it is, one might almost say the only question: for we have practically solved nearly all others. Shall we then solve this also? I know given both heart and head will say with [illegible] - "yes - yes we will - God willing we will" - Therefore

most deeply regretted that the efforts of your family [illegible] goes from the lecture and that I was [illegible] deprived of the benefit of conferring with you in regard to it as I had desired. As to my [manuscript?] it was written in a space of two or three evenings in a single week and is so mixed up & peculiar in its structure (designed only for myself) that I do not think it could be of use enough to you to keep the trouble of deciphering it.

And as regards repeating the lecture here it seems to me that having once without disguise urged the subject upon the notice and consideration or actions of my friends, it would be liable to injurious misconstriction should I attempt to repeat it - and even if my friends should request it, I fear that others might construe it into a sort of partisan effort on their part, to force the thing upon the public mind. Still I suppose that the subject might possibly be put in such a shape that no ill use

or ill influence could arise from it. While on my own part I do not disguise the fact that I am still very anxious that yourself and Dr. [Fesiley?] and several other gentleman of high intelligence who were not present before should hear it, and consider that practical use, if any, can now be made of it, or if the general thought which it suggests nor am I at all unwilling to gratify any who may wish to hear it again - should their numbers be sufficient to justify it, and the influences against misuse & misconstruction properly guarded against -

For whether this view of the slavery questions is true or false - I am fully convinced that it is the view in substance of the all that lies in reality at the bottom of the American heart - and that the political heart that bases its action and effort [honestly? and heartily?] upon it will swoop up two thirds of the votes of the whole people both north & south, in spite of all their opponents can do - and furnish the [illegible] at the [illegible] the most [illegible] & hopeful solutions of the slavery questions that the nature of the case

admits of - shall that party be the Republican party ? I hope so: for I think they deserve it - but if so now is the time for them to be [illegible] the minds of the people. With there principles of [philosophy?] & statesmanship, which is the next campaign they will need to put to practical and triumphant use - Now I say - is the time to begin - the public mind is quiet and [illegible] and open to convictions - And the true [philosophy?] of the whole subject may with little effort be put through the land, if all good men will take hold of it, without opposition or alarm - I can of course do [but?] very little. But that little I am willing I hope to do. But if I do a little, and you do a little and all do a little it will amount to a great deal before the next election & we shall revolutionise the evils of our country & truly & [philosophically?] & humanely save the Union - not [illegible] & [illegible].

I shall [deliver?] this discussion in Hillsboro by request on the 7 of April and should a way open on my return on the 8 of April could do so in Springfield if desirable.

Hon Rich D Yates

Sir
Mr. Geo. Stuart has directed me as his atty to obtain a decree of partition of the lands adjoining the Town of Mason City in this Co. Owing to the negligence of the Recorder it is almost impossible to ascertain correctly what if any conveyances have been mad for a year past. At Mr Stuart's suggestion I desire to know whether you have conveyed any part of your interest in the lands in question. If so to whom and whether you are willing to join Mr Stuart in the Petition

Respectfully

Your Obd Servt

J B Wright

Wrote him July 18th that I was willing to join him in this Petition + had not sold any of lands in question I believe.

Tallula Ills July 16th 1865

Dear Yates

The land in question is a remnant of the 320 that Mason City was laid out on we still have about 120 Acres that was not [plotted?] in to Lots located north + South of the town plot I know of no way to divide it only by the mode indicated in the [picture?]

To my knowledge you have not parted with any of the land in question I have bargined my undivided interest in said Tract on remnant of Land for which I am to get $50. per Acre in cash as soon as I am able to Execute a sufficient Deed [Warrick?] says I sold it to cheap.

The Lands in question could be partitioned in the manor you suggest but Judge Harriet's Decree made a Bolox of Law Equety and Mason City interests generally sofar as his thick Pate could

I have read your Elgin Oration cant you manage to have it Pub. in [paper?] form it is one of your proudest efforts it is a 4th July speech bran new you deal with the surroundings that restz heavily upon the Grandsons of the Patriots of -76 as a statesman only can do. have you noticed as a general rule the last 4th efforts have been complete failures the Waters have been to deep + turbed for ordinary mariners. I hope to see you soon

Truly [illegible] Greene

Dear Green -

Pleas return this with your answer whether you know about the arrangement spoken of within - and whether the parties could not agree upon a Division by arbitrator - Also have I sold any part of this land to be divided and oblige

Your friend (July 13. 1865)

Richard Yates

(Rec'd this letter today) (over)

Return this letter as I have not answered - You must read my Elgin Speech - they say I was great in it -.

My dear sir:

Permit me to introduce to you the bearer of this, Dr. Copp of Monroe County. He goes to Springfield with a view to soliciting your attention to certain objects which he desires accomplished in connection with the military service. I have known Dr Copp for a number of years. He is a man of fine talents & high character. He has long been a prominent & leading Republican in his county. I reckon him among the decidedly valuable men of my acquaintance. His son, Wm. H. Copp, who accompanies him, is desirous of going into the military service. He is a young man of character, patriotism & worth – one of that large number of high principled youth – preferring peace & home – but [illegible] to the martyrdom, if need be, for the salvation of their country. I cheerfully & heartily commend these gentlemen to your favorable consideration.

Your very resply

He is a man of fine talents & high character. He has long been a prominent & leading Republican in his county. I reckon him among the decidedly valuable men of my acquaintance. His son, Wm. H. Copp, who accompanies him, is desirous of going into the military service. He is a young man of character, patriotism & worth – one of that large number of high principled youth – preferring peace & home – but [illegible] to the martyrdom, if need be, for the salvation of their country. I cheerfully & heartily commend these gentlemen to your favorable consideration.

Your very resply

J. Baker

P.S. I must do myself the pleasure to add here, that you letter to he President so far as I have seen – was the best official word that has been spoken in America since this rebellion raised its head. JB

                    <text>
Belleville. Sep. 11./64

Gov. Yates:

Der Sir:

Please pardon the delay in replying to yours of last month. I have been much occupied in my Canvass, & have waited to see what our nominations would be before giving you my impression of the situation in this county & Madison. At the time of your writing Mr. Metcalf of Madison was already our Candidate for State Senator. - a fact you seemed to have overlooked. We have [bought?] out Col Niles & Col Thomas for the House from this County

besides a County ticket exceedingly Strong. I am clear that Niles & Thomas are the strongest men we could have selected for Representatives, & that they will give positive help to the State Senatorial ticket. For myself, I have arranged for a thorough, & rather special canvass of Madison. I shall spend the whole of week after next in that County, speaking daily or twice a day in the principal Precincts, & shall probably, farther along, address other meetings in the same county.

I am pleased to see that Gen Oglesby & yourself are posted for meetings at Edwardsville & Belleville on the 30 inst & 1st of Oct. Why not have

a meeting the next Monday Oct 3 in Waterloo in Monroe county? I know no place where a large meeting would be more likely to be fruitful of results on the State ticket. Waterloo is 17 miles from Belleville. I only offer this as a suggestion: I do not request that it be done, if it interferes at all with the general arraingments of the canvass. I think Madison & St. Clair will go straight Union together. But this is opinion. No false confidence is to be indulged - no legitimate effort spared.

Yours resply

J Baker

Is glad to know the Govr & Oglesby are appointed to speak there. Wants to know if they cant have a meeting at Waterloo in Monroe county on Oct. 3d.

Gov. Yates:

J Baker

Replying to Govr's letter of last month. he gives the candidates for House & Senate in that Dist also county ticket. which he says is exceedingly strong Prospects there are very good. Is glad to know the Govr & Oglesby are appointed to speak there. Wants to know if they cant have a meeting at Waterloo in Monroe county on Oct. 3d.

To his Excellency,

Richard Yates

Governor of the

State of Ills

Sir:

The origin, progress, and incidents of the contest now waging in the revolted States for the preservation of the Union and the Constitution, will have an interest and importance for future generations far beyond what is felt in the present day.

Believing that it will be an acceptable duty to the people of the whole country to preserve, in a convenient form, the services rendered by the loyal men of America to the cause of the Union, I propose to publish, at an early day, a work devoted to that object.

If it be agreeable to you to give your influence and encouragement to such a work, by furnishing me with such information as may aid me in my purpose, I shall feel greatly obliged. The work will comprise a biographical record of the leading men, civil and military, who have taken a prominent part in suppressing the Rebellion, and will be illustrated with finely engraved portraits, as well as maps and plans of battles. The subjects will be classified by States and Territories, and will comprise executive, civil, military, and naval officers, and men of science and philanthropy.

In addition to a sketch of your own life and public services, it would greatly facilitate my purpose if you would designate some person who will also furnish the like information in regard to the prominent civil and military officers connected with your official duties.

The work must necessarily be published by subscription, and I respectfully ask to be favored with your name and influence.

With sentiments of high respect,

Your Obedient Servant,

J Burns

PROSPECTUS.

The Subscriber will publish, as soon as the materials can be obtained, a work, to be entitled "THE LOYAL MEN OF AMERICA, Civil and Military, with Portraits and other Illustrations."

This work is intended to be a permanent record of the patriotic services rendered by prominent citizens engaged in upholding the cause of the Union and suppressing Rebellion. It will embrace the President and Cabinet, Members of Congress, Governors of States,--all who have rendered themselves conspicuous for gallantry in arms, or devotion to civil duties.

J Burns

Please address your reply to J. BURNS, Washington City, under cover of the Hon. SAMUEL C. POMEROY, U. S. Senator, Washington, D. C.

Circular from J. Burns, Washington

Proposing to publish a book & asking for biographical sketch of Gov. &c.

Mr Wright has, on all occasions, shown himself to be an exempliary young man, patriotic, brave, discrete, temperate and faithful, without a murmur, in the discharges of every duty both in Camp and in the face of the enemy, won the high esteem of each member of his Company and the admiration of both his Company and Regimental Officers.

His military quallifications are more than ordinary and his ability in the discharge of any kind of business is worthy of mention.
