Johnson of this city, and president of the Board of Medical Examinors, asking him to examine me without delay, for the post of 2nd Assistant Surgeon of his (Orme's) regiment.  Will you have the kindness to send as soon as possible to Prof. Johnson the necessary official order to authorize me to appear before the honorable Board.  The letter from Col. Orme alluded to above, and also a letter endorsing my moral character, from Dr Noble an old and well known citizen of McLean County, and one of the Republican candidates for state Representative from that district are on file with the papers of the Board, and consequently (being a stranger in Chicago) I cannot &lt;u&gt;send&lt;/u&gt; you a certificate as to my character without going home or waiting to write there &amp;amp; time presses.

These being facts, I must earnestly ask Your Excellency to have this man Webster removed and a Patriot appointed in his place.

I know not who gave him the appointment, but this I do know, that Webster &lt;u&gt;is, and always has been,&lt;/u&gt; an open and avowed Copperhead and Rebel Sympathizer, was a candidate for Sheriff of Marion County befor the Copperhead Convention this fall, and is known and regarded as a Copperhead &amp;amp; Rebel Sympathizer by all Union men in his own County. These being facts, I must earnestly ask Your Excellency to have this man Webster removed and a Patriot appointed in his place.

&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now if I should raise two or three hundred men as permits to the 87th would they not be credited to the state under the present call and could not the order accepting my Resignation be set aside and I be re-instated as Col of the 87th in as much as no one has ever been appointed in my place. &lt;p&gt;would suggest that by the time I could get the recruits mustered they would only have about a year to serve.
