</p><p>Allow me to introduce to you my friend James H. Purdy. Mr. Purdy is an Ex Major of the 59th N.Y. Vol. and visits Illinois, and other Northern States, for the purpose of seeing the Governors of the same in relation to the new composing the late Miss. Marine Brigade. The Brigade, as I suppose you already know, was lately disbanded by the order of Genrl Canby and the men transfered, some of them, back to their Regiments, while the remainder were organised into an entirely new command. A majority I understand have served out their three years. But some officer in authority has decided that they were discharged from their old regiments when transfered, and that they must serve three years from the time they were mustered with the Marine Brigade. Such a procedure has caused great dissatisfaction among them, and they are almost in a state of mutiny. There are many Illinoisians among them and if this

I refrained from doing so because I knew you had been greatly annoyed by many, in importuning your kind offices for them without regarding whether you did yourself justice or not. I therefore abstained from troubling you about myself, hoping that when the Senatorial Contest was over I might find you disengaged a few minutes. So when you came home, I intended to come and lay my case before you, but then I felt that you came home to get rest from the strife for office, and did not think it proper to intrude upon you. Besides Mr. Cassell told me he had laid the whole case before you and that you approved his wishes about my reappointment and that I need not feel anxious about it. Nevertheless I cannot but feel that courtesy
