Third Auditor's Office,

7th of Sept. 1864.

Dear Governor

I revere the Sacred Scriptures, and from that blessed book we are taught to "ask largely that our Joys may be Full" And as you have always kindly and cheerfully granted all in your power to aid your friends I come once more to ask a special favor and one if granted promises success, and if I could be successful, would put me in just such a position as I desire: and one to which I am vain enough to believe that I am peculiarly, and especially, adapted. And as My present Salary is not sufficient to meet my current expenses you see it would be to me a perfect "God send".

Will you Gov. be kind enough to write me a good strong letter of recommendation to Secretary Fessenden recommending me as suitable and well qualified for the duties of "Revenue Agent" under the 4th Section of the Revenue law of June 1864

The duties are about similar to that of a Special Mail Agent, This section defines the duties as follows Viz: "To aid in prevention, detection and punishments of frauds" upon the collections of Revenue &c. It will require extensive travel and require active movements, energy & and tact, being much abroad amongst the people all of which I can do and do effectually.

If this appointment could be, as I hope to have it done urged and urged strongly upon the Secretary I could the sooner carry out my desire as expressed in a letter to you not long since to return to Illinois and cooperate with my friends in the comeing political contests. Now Gov. help me if you please say as much as your tender conscience will allow you to say in my behalf and I assure you if you will do me this one more favor I will never forget your kindness to me and in the comeing future I shall hold myself under deep obligations untill it is fully reciprocated

Please enclosed the Secy. letter to me and I will place it on file with others received and comeing and hand them all in in order. Respty J. G. D. Pettijohn

Pettijohn J. G. D.

3d auditor's Office Sept 7th 1864

He reveres the Sacred scriptures by which he is taught to "ask largely that our joys may be full" hence he wants Govr. to recommend him "strongly" to Secty Fessendon for appointment as Revenue Agent.

Respty J. G. D. Pettijohn

He reveres the Sacred scriptures by which he is taught to "ask largely that our joys may be full" hence he wants Govr. to recommend him "strongly" to Secty Fessendon for appointment as Revenue Agent.

My Dear Sir

We are now making arrangements for a large meeting here on Thursday Nov 3d and I have been specially authorized by the committee of arrangements to secure your attendance if possible. It is designed to be an imposing demonstration, and as you have not been in our Congressional district during the campaign it is earnestly hoped that you will be able to come. Indeed from information which I received in Chicago a day or two since, and which when I see you I can explain, I am persuaded that your own interests may make it of some importance that you should visit us. Wentworth and Trumbull are expected & Ingersoll has also been invited. I see you have an appt. at Alton the day following, but we are to have an extra train which will take you

into the city by 1/2 past 7 and the Alton train does not leave until 9 which would drop you at Alton next day in time for the meeting. You will probably receive a letter from Turner on the subject.

Most earnestly hoping that you will not disappoint the expectations of our people in this part of the State, I remain Very truly & faithfully

Your Friend & Servant
