To his Excellency Artesia Iroquois Co Sept 18, 1864

Richard Yates, Gov. of the State of Ill.

                                 Dear Sir,

When in April last your Excellency called for 30,000

one hundred days volunteers, my son, with other young

men, many of them students in a literary institution in this

county, dropped their books and answered that call. They

were mustered into the 134th Regit, and are now at Maysfield,

K.y. Their time is out, and yet the Satrap who rules in the

place of that faithful officer, Gen Payne, refuses to

dismiss them, and has set them at work on the fortifications,

in the place of the citizens, whom he dismissed, and said he

“would let them know the soldiers place,”— and would keep

them as long as “he pleased,” and the like. Several of the boys

are sick, and the last letter home my son bro,t the news that

he was unfit for duty—that he had kept at his post as

long as he could.

I ask your Excellency, is there no redress, from

such upstart tyranny! They call Pres. Lincoln, a tyrant,

but if he approached within a thousand miles of such tyran

ny, there might be some justice in the accusation.

Can your Excellency do any thing to redress this [out

-rage?]? If so I trust that you will attend to it without delay.

                        Very truly yours

                                        Geo. Heedham

——

response

and attention

Buckley P.O.

Geo. Heedham

His son and several [other?]

young men in that county

who were students of a

literary institution. dropped

their books and responded to the

call for 100 Days men.

There time has expired

and they are still kept

to work on fortifications.

Can they not be discharged?

There is a general desire in this County to have you make an appointment to speak during the present canvass. We would like very much to have you about the 10th or 12" of October If we can only engage you positively we can get up a splendid meeting

Bromwell will be here at the same time

My own health has been such during the Summer that I have not been able to do any thing in the way of Canvassing. I am taking good care of myself in the hope that I shall be able to devote October to the work

While we have but little fear but that we shall carry the county I am worried about the seeming apathy that prevails here

I implore you to come if it is possible

Dear Sir:

There is a general desire in this County to have you make an appointment to speak during the present canvass. We would like very much to have you about the 10th or 12" of October If we can only engage you positively we can get up a splendid meeting

Bromwell will be here at the same time

My own health has been such during the Summer that I have not been able to do any thing in the way of Canvassing. I am taking good care of myself in the hope that I shall be able to devote October to the work

While we have but little fear but that we shall carry the county I am worried about the seeming apathy that prevails here

I implore you to come if it is possible

Very truly Yours
