Feeling intensely anxious that you should be elected to the U. S. Senate, I am more or less mortified about it. I do not say that the ticket cannot be elected, for all the balance of it is strong, the one weak spot being the representatives, yet I told some of the delegates yesterday "if you put up those two, we're beat." The convention nominated Col John Thomas and Nathl. Niles. The first named was elected to the last legislature as I understand, by about six majority, falling behind his colleague Jo. Underwood. Both of them were members of our County Court that saddled this county with an enormous debt in making a very poor job in building our Court House.

His Excellency R. Yates,

Gov of the State of Ill

My Dear Sir:

On my return this morning from the East, where I was for several weeks detained by sickness in my family, I find that your Excellency did me the honor, on the 16th ult. to write me, asking my cooperation in the work of raising a regiment for the defense of the State.

So long a time has elapsed since the date of your letter that I probably shall not have the pleasure of aiding in the good work to which you call me & which I regret I was not at home to promptly undertake. Still something may yet remain to be done & I now write to inquire if at this late day I can be of any service & to offer my hearty cooperation.

Meanwhile without waiting for a reply I shall immediately consult reliable friends here and engage their cooperation, in the work of

of securing men, if they should be needed.

As you speak of our having "an enemy in our midst, as dangerous as the rebel in open arms", I venture, I hope not presumptuously, to express my own apprehension that the catch words of certain politicians for "a free election or a free fight" are now for the purpose of preparing their followers for a violent & revolutionary assault at the polls on Election day under the pretense that the Government does not intend to allow a free Election. Perhaps these are groundless apprehensions but I cannot dispossess my mind of them, though I have heard of no one expressing similar opinions, I rest however in the hope that so far as our State is concerned, if there is danger, your vigilance and energy will not be at fault. But I fear the National authorities are not awake to the dangers that exist, & that consequences far more serious & lasting than mobs & local emeutes may result.

Most Respectfully Yours

Geo. J. King

Geo. J. King

We send you a Petition of citizens of Kansas Tp. in reference to the injustice of Drafting our Tp. Kansas with Grandview for 47 men as reported delinquent by Mr Fithian. - our Tp has been and is now unconditionally Loyal, and we have all taken an active part heretofore to get men to enlist in the army of the United States, and Grandview has been intensely Disloyal and has discouraged volunteering from the first breaking out of the war, the Consequence is with a Smaller population in Kansas Tp than Grandview we have sent two or three soldiers to the army, to their (Grandview) one, we now ask you in the name of the Loyal people of Kansas Tp to have our sub-district changed and let each Tp stand upon its own bottom

Please let me hear from you soon on this subject.

Very truly Your friend

He as the Govr to have its district charged. so that "each Tp shall stand on its own bottom"

Springfield

Dear Sir,

Asa J. Baber

Kansas Ills

Baber. Asa. J.

Kansas, Ills. Sept 9th 64

Complains of unfairness in combining Kansas Tp. with Grandview. for Draft purposes Says that Kansas is strictly Loyal & has always encouraged enlistments while Grandview is disloyal & consequently has not furnished her quota. He as the Govr to have its district charged. so that "each Tp shall stand on its own bottom"

The period for which we enlisted (one hundred days) expired yesterday. During that time we have done cheerfully, all the duty which has been required of us, and now we desire to be mustered out of the service. This is the unanimous sentiment of the Regiment, and as a Regiment we have so informed our officers. Knowing as we do that hundred days troops from other States have been promptly mustered out of service at the expiration of their time we know of no reason why the troops from Illinois should be dealt with in a less equitable manner.

The officers in command tell us they are waiting for orders but do not know at what time we shall be ordered home. We do therefore as citizens of Illinois appeal to you as our Governor to use your influence in our behalf and secure our discharge from service soon as possible.
