In [illegible] the enquiry

That after allowing sufficient time for such application, the Com. should meet in Chicago to canvass and compare these claims, and make out its report and recommendation.

It seemed to me also that the Governor himself should be present with the Com. to aid their counsels and ensure harmony in their report.

I was disappointed in not being able to meet you at Mr Woodworths during your late visit to Chicago to obtain a further explanation of your own views in regard to the use and distribution of the lands granted by Congress to this State for the benefit of Agriculture & the Mechanic Arts.

In [illegible] the enquiry

you have submitted to the Com. it has seemed to me best as a preliminary measure to invite parties representing different sections of the State intending to apply for any portion of this fund, to prepare a written Statement - and forward it to the Committee. That after allowing sufficient time for such application, the Com. should meet in Chicago to canvass and compare these claims, and make out its report and recommendation.

It seemed to me also that the Governor himself should be present with the Com. to aid their counsels and ensure harmony in their report.

The duties are about similar to that of a Special Mail Agent, This section defines the duties as follows Viz: "To aid in prevention, detection and punishments of frauds" upon the collections of Revenue &c. It will require extensive travel and require active movements, energy & and tact, being much abroad amongst the people all of which I can do and do effectually.

If this appointment could be, as I hope to have it done urged and urged strongly upon the Secretary I could the sooner carry out my desire as expressed in a letter to you not long since to return to Illinois and cooperate with my friends in the comeing political contests. Now Gov. help me if you please say as much as your tender conscience will allow you to say in my behalf and I assure you if you will do me this one more favor I will never forget your kindness to me and in the comeing future I shall hold myself under deep obligations untill it is fully reciprocated

Please enclosed the Secy. letter to me and I will place it on file with others received and comeing and hand them all in in order. Respty J. G. D. Pettijohn

I have been detached from the Regiment. Since it came into the State and am not able to State the feelings or the disposition of the men to Re-enlist. Six Companies of my Command have been at St. Louis. For some time but are now down south

at some point: that I am not informed of: Only 3 companies are here. One at Gasconade River. I have forwarded more Circulars to St Louis hoping men may find the Regiment. In time to do some thing yet.

My impression is that in this as most cases like it the men will want to be at home – a few days: long enough to get tired of it before they will Reenlist to any Extent; I think a short time at home would induce numbers of them to Re-enter the Service – The Guerrilla Warfare here is very formidable:

Your Communication of date Aug 10th 1864. Accompanying Circular No from the War Department. Concerning the Re-Enlistment of the 100 days men Came to hand about an hour since.

From the present price of Stockings it will be an object perhaps for us when we purchase and pay for a pair to take her ground that she does, and insist that a pair means two pairs!. She returned me the price one dollar seventy five cents $1.75, which I inclose. I had half a mind to look after the handkerchiefs which you spoke of and expend the money there but if you desire it I will purchase them at any time or do any other shopping you may desire with the greatest pleasure.

Please tell darling Dickey that Aunt Al was disappointed and very sorry that he did not come back to give me the Kiss.
