Albany, and other points on the Ohio River, to their homes in the northern and western states; and the untold sufferings, as well as the many noble lives sacrificed on account of that deficiency: To call the attention of his Excellency Gov. Yates of Illinois to the importance of immediate action on that subject, by our State in behalf of her noble suffering sons I would recommend the establishing of a Hospital Train, similar to those now running on Military Roads, to be placed on some of our main tracks in Illinois and Indiana. I hope you will also press the matter of a Clame Agency for Illinois.

As when I called upon you this morning I found you so ill, I did not say to you, all that I wished to say. You will therefore excuse the liberty I take in addressing you. As I told you the "hard times" has compelled me to dispose of my paper and printing office at a ruinous sacrifice and with almost discouragement and despair I have looked into the future to discover if possible where I am to land, to use a sailor's phraseology. I well know, or at least can imagine the numerous applications that are made to you for positions and and the perplexity in which it must oftentimes involve you. And here let me say that I shall respect you none the less should you fail to do me a favor of the kind I wish

Allow me to address you Governor, in the same manner in which all men of the common feelings of humanity prefer to be addressed whether occupying a public or private position. Since I was 12 years of age I have been obliged to depend upon my own resources and having had until for the past few years but pore health my way has not been extremely smooth. I merely state this to show you how much of fortunes favors I have known. Securing my education by labor after and before "school hours" and during vacations I believe I know the energy necessary to be carried into any pursuit in order to accomplish any important object. Now Governor had I disposed of my political principles last summer for money or had those in whom I confided used that

influence for me to sustain me that they promised and that I had reason to expect after aiding and assisting to elevate them to public positions, I would not ask you to assist me at this time. If you could aid me to obtain a situation where I might obtain a salary sufficient to sustain myself and family and give me an opportunity to pay of a few demands against me, I would feel just as I think you would feel were you a young man in my situation - truly grateful. Should I obtain a position as quartermaster of a regiment or any other, I will try and do my duty honestly, energetically and faithfully. Do not recommend nor appoint me unless from what you know or can learn of me I am competent. I write this between hope and fear but I rely

upon your kindness and forbearance. I ask as a favor that you will let my application or at least my motives for making it remain alive with you. Hoping that you may be speedily restored to good health and that I may hear from you I remain

not understand that it is on

interest in them. I think

one's friendship may as

well be shown, in some

cases, by letting a man

alone, as in any other

way.

At the request of Dr

Goodbreak, I wish to say

a word about another matter.

Dr G. has been appointed

Surgeon of this Regement

by Col Marsh, & Dr F. K.

Baily Afst. Surgeon. As

a matter of pride, and

really of conscience now, for

they have both been employed

nearly from the beginning,

they would like to retain

their places. I suppose

there is really no diffi

culty in the matter. But

they feel anxious. Dr G has

pafsed his examination before

the Committee. Dr B will

be ready to do so on

his arrival at Springfield.

I think them both pecu

liarly well fitted for their

respective positions, & both

well qualified. Dr G

is from Clinton DeWitte

C. & brings the best of

recommendations. Dr B

is an old practicioner

here & I Know of no more

faithful or conscientious

man to fill his place.

Both have given, I believe,

entire satisfaction -

Excuse me for this hasty

appointment recently made

for Senator. I have no doubt

you have been put under pretty

severe prefsure from quarters

where I am quite sure there

is no real sympathy for you,

& to which you owe nothing.

Browning will make an

Excellent Senator. If I do not

interfere with my advice, in

these matters, I beg you will

not understand that it is on

account of any want of

interest in them. I think

one's friendship may as

well be shown, in some

cases, by letting a man

alone, as in any other

way.

At the request of Dr

Goodbreak, I wish to say

a word about another matter.

Dr G. has been appointed

Surgeon of this Regement

by Col Marsh, & Dr F. K.

Baily Afst. Surgeon. As

a matter of pride, and

really of conscience now, for

they have both been employed

nearly from the beginning,

they would like to retain

their places. I suppose

there is really no diffi

culty in the matter. But

they feel anxious. Dr G has

pafsed his examination before

the Committee. Dr B will

be ready to do so on

his arrival at Springfield.

I think them both pecu

liarly well fitted for their

respective positions, & both

well qualified. Dr G

is from Clinton DeWitte

C. & brings the best of

recommendations. Dr B

is an old practicioner

here & I Know of no more

faithful or conscientious

man to fill his place.

Both have given, I believe,

entire satisfaction -

Excuse me for this hasty

note. The mail is just going.

DrSir,

Parker Holden 1st Searg. in Co F, 20th Regt. Ills Volrs, & his friends who are amongst the oldest & most respectable citizens of this County, have requested me to write you a word touching his promotion to a Lieutenantcy. He represents that he has the voice? of the company almost unanimously & the recommendation of the Lieut Col (Irwin), and that the reason why his name was not submitted to you was on account of

an old grudge which Col Marsh holds against him. Holden & some others disliked extremely to be sworn in under Col M. and it was perhaps owing more to my persuasions & assurances that all would be right, than to any other cause, that they were finally sworn in for the war. I know Holden to be a first rate young man, & that he would fill the place with credit to himself, and I am very confident that his representations in regard to the matter are true. I most devoutly wish that justice could be done him in the premises From

my own Knowledge of the man & from my long acquaintance with the family I can most cordially commend him to your favorable consideration.
