I have long been a personal admirer of your course in public life. I rejoiced at your election to Congress in 1850, and doubly rejoiced when you beat John Calhoun in 1852, notwithstanding the disadvantage you labored under of the then late gerrymandering of the District. Your course in regard to the Nebraska Bill made me feel proud of you, and your defeat in 1854 on account <hr /> of that course saddened and grieved me, to think that a good man should be beaten for doing right. The case made such an impression on my mind that I have never yet forgotten that Harris beat you just 200 votes. When at the State Convention in 1858 at Springfield, I heard you declare undying hostility to slavery, regardless of the opinions of others, I exclaimed in my heart: "Dick Yates is one of the best and noblest men of Earth - would to God the country were full of such!" In 1860 you were my first choice for Governor, and afterwards for the Senate. I am now speaking the truth frankly, and trust you will forgive me if I touch upon a subject disagreeable to you, and doubly so to me. Soon after you were elected Governor the report became current that you had one serious failing, that of drinking too hard. At first I bitterly denied it, and pledged my word that it was not true; and I continued to deny it until the evidence <hr /> became so strong that I could deny it no longer. I do not wish you to understand me, as claiming any thing from you, on that score however; But to be brief, I am in distress, I am in a neighborhood hostile to evry principal of liberty and Justice and I am anxious to get away from <hr /> a place that is liable to be the theater of mob violence, and bloodshed at any moment, You know me well enough, to know that I would scorn to conseal my political sentiments, and I have consequently become obnoxious to a set of hot brained Jack asses, a large majority of whom, are as poor as myself, and never will be able to own a slave, but they are ready to do any act of filth for their masters (the slave owners) By foul and fair means I have got a little in debt to some of them, and I cannot get away without some little aid After thinking over evry way and means that I was master of I have come to the conclusion to apply to you for the lone of a small sum of money to aid me in getting back to Illinois <hr /> Now "dick, it is a little mortifying to my pride to be compelled to make this application. And whether there Could not be an Army from the East got that would be less tainted with the Develment of the Society than any are that might be got in the west.
