I hope to see you this winter if I can get time to come to Springfield. I wrote you some days ago in regard to Commissionship for Clark. When you have positively concluded upon the man you agoing to appoint if you think it proper let me know it as Mr Clark would like to know how the matter stands as soon as possible. In your message give the [secessionists?] h-ll they deserve to be put through. I see Bates goes into the Cabinet that suits me first rate hope the others will be as good men.

There I have given you names enough to save the country --

I hope to see you this winter if I can get time to come to Springfield. I wrote you some days ago in regard to Commissionship for Clark. When you have positively concluded upon the man you agoing to appoint if you think it proper let me know it as Mr Clark would like to know how the matter stands as soon as possible. In your message give the [secessionists?] h-ll they deserve to be put through. I see Bates goes into the Cabinet that suits me first rate hope the others will be as good men.

Just as soon as the old Democratic leaders can find an opportunity they will make an issue again with us, and we may expect it very soon. The indications are that Crittenden will be elected to Congress, Then Kentucky will come forward with some confounded compromise and we shall be sold out by any democrat that can be appointed. Why would it not be well to appoint some aspirant for the Governorship and then we can make him

Governor at the end of four years and releave the thing of any embarrassment, but for God sake appoint a tried and true Republican. Browning is here most favourable spoken of, his appointment would be hailed with pleasure and he is such a good friend of yours, as that there could of course no conflict come between yourself and him.

I hear it rumered that you have been inclined to appoint Scammon, now above all things that you could do, this would afflict the party here most.

Do not consider me medling with what does not concern me. I know that as a general thing you have elected to counsel, not with your true friends here in matters concerning us here, but excuse this.

Honored & Dear Sir
You once assured me that I should have the place when the first vacancy occured in the office of Bank Com. I have learned through the news papers that Col. Ferry has been given an appointment under the government of the U.S. If consistant with your views of propriety I would be glad to receive this favour at your hands, and should remember it with gratitude.
