I See in this morning St Louis Democrat a letter from Mr Robb to your excellency in reference to Forrests raid on the Mo & Ohio Rail Road in which Mr Robb does me injustice (not intentially, I presume) He Says that the Reble Commander had quietly taken posession of Trenton - quietly for the reason the force stationed at that place having been moved to Jackson, thus being the case Col Fry the Post Commander had nothing to do but to give up his Sword &c. It is true that all my forces including the Artillary had been ordered to Jackson by Genl Sulevan against my judgment of its propriety. The same order applied to all the Post from Jackson to Columbus leaving those Post without forces to defend them and making them and the Road an easy prise to the enemy Genl Sulivans order to me was to send all my available force with the Artillary to Jackson reserving only the convelesent for gard duty This I done. I had previously made a very strong defence by way of Rifle pots around my Artillary

by which of my Artillary and men had not ben withdrawn could have whoped Forrest with his whole force But as it was I was compelled to make the best arangment I could I therefore mad my defense at the depot with Cotton Bales and got all my little force there
determaned to make the best defense I could when the enemy came - knowing that Forrest was moving towards Trenton I Telegraphed Genl Davies at Columbus on Friday my condition and that I expected an attack [illegible] but he refused to Send any reinforcements notwithstanding he had both men & artillary and Columbus never was in any danger from Forrest. I had my scouts out and they reported to me Forrests movements from which I became satisfied that his movements towards Jackson was only a feint to cover his move on Trenton and the Road above Jackson. On Saterday morning Telegraphed to Genl Sulivan that the enemy lay that night at Spring Creek 20 Miles from Trenton and that he was moving upon me but I got no releaf from that quarter My Scouts reported them within three or four miles advancing upon us I then drew in all my Pickets and gards in and got all my little force within the Brest works and wated the approach of the enemy - At three oclock he made his appearance by a heavy charge in two colums

with his Cavarly they were hansomly repulsed with considerable loss both in killed and wounded we lost one man killed none wounded his Cavarly then dashed off out of range of our guns he then planted his Batteries and commenced Shelling us we having don all that was possable under the circumstances on consultatn with the officer the surrender was made - Enclosed I send you a statment of the affare published in the M Republican which gives a very correct account of the matter - I confes that I do not understand the propriety of the Consentratn of the forces at Jackson as it was done. But I presum that it was one of those stragetic movements that ordinary

Dear Sir,

I have thought it probable that you would cause the entire Militia of this State to be organised preparatory to making a Draft, defending our homes & firesides, collecting the Revenue & enforcing the laws; I have had some experience in Military Matters having been employed in the Quarter Master's & Commissary's Departments at West Point N.Y. many years of my early manhood; I am now past fifty years of age & therefore not subject to be drafted, but I felt myself fully competent to drill or command a Regiment a Brigade or a Division. I some days since enclosed a copy of a letter from Gov Washington Hunt addressed to the Secretary of War in my behalf to my son, requesting that you would peruse the same if Col Holt should have left Springfield.

I should like to do something to aid in putting down this wicked rebellion and at the same time provide something for my six little daughters whose mother is dead.

I have the honor to be

Yours respectfully

Jacob H. Holt

Jacob H. Holt

The War Meeting.

In response to a call previously made, the citizens of Old Warren held a mass meeting at Monmouth, on Saturday, the 2d inst, to take into consideration the late call of the President for volunteers. The number of persons in attendance was almost incredible, when we know that it was in the midst of the busiest season for farmers.

A stand was erected for the accommodation of speakers, in Broadway, opposite the Baldwin House, and seats for the audience arranged about it.

The meeting was organized by Major J. H. HOLT being called to the Chair, and J. K. RIPLEY, appointed Secretary.

The Chairman first introduced E. A. STORRS, Esq., of Chicago, who addressed the audience for the space of an hour, in the eloquent and spirited style characteristic of him.

He was followed by Rev. Dr. WALLACE, of Monmouth, in a speech of wonderful scope and power.

The meeting was then addressed by Rev. Mr. NORTHRUP, P.E. REED, Esq. and Maj J. H. HOLT, successively, after which the meeting adjourned.

We must not omit to mention the Monmouth Cornet Band which "did up" the music of the occasion in the most approved style. The occasion was also enlivened by a song from a choir of young ladies from Ellison.

J. H. HOLT, Chairman.

<text>Samuel Witwer grew up in Gary, Indiana before attending Dickinson College and then Harvard Law School. After finishing school, he moved Chicago to live and practice law.

He became interested in constitutional revision in the 1940’s and worked diligently for it, pleading before the Illinois Senate Executive Committee in 1947 and the House of Representatives in 1949. He was actively involved in getting the 1950 “Gateway Amendment” passed which made it easier to amend the constitution. He was the state chairman for the Committee for Constitutional Revision from 1950-1957. Witwer ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1960, losing to Paul H. Douglas.

In 1968 when the voters favored a constitution convention, Witwer was elected as a delegate and then chosen by a 109 to 0 vote of delegates to act as its president. The convention succeeded in drafting a new constitution which was then passed by a large majority of the voters.

Witwer was also involved in civic organizations in Chicago. He was a director of the Chicago Urban League, the Citizens for a Greater Chicago and the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations. He was a member of the Chicago Union League Club, which gave him an award in 1954 for civic service. The magazine Chicago recognized him as one of the “five builders of Chicago” in 1954 and the Church Federation of Greater Chicago selected him as “one of three Chicago laymen of the year” in 1956. In 1969 the Citizens of Greater Chicago gave him their award of merit.

The finding aid for the Samuel Witwer Papers, 1946-1977 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/697.

Photographs in this collection include several images from events supporting the 1950 Gateway Amendment Campaign.</text>

                  <text>
Casper J. (or C. J.) Jacoby was born in 1855, one of eleven children of Henry and Katherine Peiter Jacoby of Brighton, Illinois. C. J. Jacoby attended public schools in Brighton and Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton, Missouri. He became a country school teacher, but after a year gave up that career to become a traveling salesman.

In 1883 he established the first Jacoby store in Bunker Hill, combining furniture sales with undertaking. His store soon offered carpets, wallpaper, pianos, organs, and sewing machines in addition to furniture. In 1891 C. J., along with four brothers, Philip W., Henry C., Louis C. and William C., initiated a stock company; and in 1892 they established a second store in Jerseyville, Illinois. Operating under the name Jacoby Brothers, the furniture and undertaking business provided a source of employment for the Jacoby siblings, with Louis Jacoby becoming the manager of the Jerseyville store.

In 1897, C. J. Jacoby opened a store in Alton. C. J. left the management of the Jacoby Brothers’ stores in Bunker Hill and Jerseyville to his brothers, and began to operate the Alton store under the name of C. J. Jacoby and Company. This store became the largest of the Jacoby stores. In 1904 the store located itself at 627-629 East Second Street. In 1925 Jacoby purchased the Alton Laundry Company building and the Dr. Wuellner building, which were next to each other on Broadway in Alton. In November of 1930, a modern three story store was opened at the Broadway location. In addition to the three furniture stores established, a fourth was opened in 1920 in Wood River. Jacoby also purchased the Alton Hardware Company in 1917, which continued to operate as a hardware concern.

He married Anna D. Lippoldt (1858-1929) in 1882, also the child of German immigrants. Together they had eight children: Oscar K. (1885-1905), Clara H., Effie F., Edwin L., Philip W., Caspar J., Jr., Verneda and Anna. All the Jacoby children attended Central Wesleyan College. Edwin, Philip and Caspar, Jr. inherited the operation of the Alton Store from their father as he entered retirement. As of 1985, the grandchildren of C. J. Jacoby continued to operate the Alton store at 627 West Broadway. The Jacoby family donated the Broadway location the the Madison County Arts Council for use as the Jacoby Arts Center, which opened in 2004.

The finding aid for the C. J. Brother P. W. Jacoby died on Dec. 23d, 1899, aged 48 years, 11 months and 19 days; We miss thee from our homes, dear brother, We miss thee from thy place, A shadow o'er our life is cast,- We miss thy sun-lit face, We miss thy kind and willing hands, Thy fond and earnest care; Our homes are dark without thee, brother, We miss thee everywhere. The Angels' care is well bestowed To worthy sons of God, Tho' 'twas forbid that we might see Where our dear brother trod. Be this God's plan. We know so true, In God's eternal Dome, Our brother's safe, and waiting there To welcome us all home."</text>

                  <text>
Casper J.

J. <text>
Springfield Mo. June 18th 1862

His Ex. Richd Yates

Gov. State of Ills.

Sir

Some time ago prompted by what I conceived to be a sense of duty, I tendered my resignation as Col. of the 10th Ills Cavalry: A position that I recd at your hand and for which I shall every feel grateful. Lest you may feel inclined to impute other than good motives for the step I have concluded to write you in explanation.

You have not forgotten I suppose that I made my proposition to the War Department (at the suggestion of Col Baker) to raise a Regmt. of Cavalry to take the place of the Regulars then being called in from the Frontier & proposing to get it up exclusively for that service - was accepted on my own terms subject to your approval, which approval was promptly given by commissioning me at once.

Afterwards when I had six companies already in Camp for fear that this might be ground for misunderstanding I obtained your permission to visit

Washington (which I did in company with yourself) to see President Lincoln & frankly inform him what I was doing & to obtain a definite approval from him to enlist my men on condition that their field of service would be on the Frontier.

He took me to the Secretary of War & informed him how I was enlisting my men; the Secretary answered by saying that the Governmt had the service for [me?] there & would continue to have it & hence the condition made no material difference and directed me to go on & raise my Regmt. that he intended "to farm out Utah to me" to use his own expression.

Relying upon assurances coming from so high a quarter I thought I had a perfect right to enlist men in that way & so announced it in every leading Newspaper in the West. I informed Genl Halleck of the facts at St Louis & requested him if in his power to send us where we were plainly accepted to go. He thought proper not to comply although troops were needed at the time on the Frontier very much for on the same day that I was ordered with my command to Report to Genl Curtis the 6th Ohio was ordered to the Plains much against their wishes.

The result is that I have been made to muster a large Regmt of men into the service under false pretenses and under such circumstances

cant expect to command the Respect & confidence of the officers or men.

This in connection with the fact that Genl Fuller (for what reason I know not) had advised Genl Curtis in advance of me, that my loyalty
was suspected & I must be watched, will afford ample reason for my course.

I quit the service Reluctantly & would have been glad to have remained long enough to have had an oppty to test my loyalty & to put to blush
these foul insinuations

My resignation has given cause for still greater dissatisfaction in my Regmt. more particularly among the noncommissioned officers & men.
From the present feeling that seems to prevail throughout the Regmt. I doubt its capacity to do much good in this direction & would Respectfully ask your kind interposition for them in either procuring service for them where they were accepted to go or else to have them
mustered out of service

Please pardon me for writing you so at length but I feel anxious to set my-self right with you whom I have ever held in such high esteem

Yours Most truly

James A Barrett

                <text>

I have a great desire to return to my regiment. but the late order from the Secy. of War allows me no more time to recover the use of my limb, as I have now been absent more than sixty days. I write to ask you if I cannot be appointed by you to some duty where I can be of service in my present condition. till I am able to return to the regiment. I send you a letter of introduction from Rev. C.B. Barton with which I called to see you last week but your absence prevented my having

an interview with you as I desired. For further recomendation I refer you to Gen. Palmer. also to Col. Post of our regiment. I have just received an order from Col. Post for the recruiting service. but according to the Adjt. Gen's order, no volunteers will be received after the 10th inst. My "leave of absence" expires today.
