A friend of mine, Rev. John L. Mr. Guard is one of my students, whom I brought away from Virginia 12 years ago. he is loyal to the back home, and has suffered much for his outspoken advocacy of Union principles. Please send to me through the Post Office, such a note, and oblidge Yours truly

Dear Governor -

Your favors of the 14th instant is received. I received a letter from Nash of Ottawa a day or two ago in which he says that "Yates Stocks" is above par in that section. He says that Bushnell and the three representatives will go for you first, last and all the time. I think we can count up men enough on our [illegible] ends to give you the nomination on the first ballot.

Jo. Medill has gone to Washington to be about a month or six weeks and during his absence, Horace White runs the machine. I think there will be no further departure from the strict neutrality of policy. Mr. Medill assures me

2

there should be none. I know he has been represented to join in the fight, but he refuses. He favors your claims to the position, I know.

As to Bross, I have never heard how he does stand - but I think he is your friend. You know the peculiarities of his disposition as well as I do. He is eminently social and good natured and desires to please everybody, but I do not believe he can be made a tool of by the opposition, or by the friends of Logan, Palmer, Washburn or anybody else. Col Eastman is a fast friend of yours and is doing you good service. He feels entirely hopeful

of a satisfactory termination to the canvass, as I think he has reason to feel.

Who is Oglesby going to nominate for the office as his gift? I hear Col. Loomis married for Attorney General. Is he to be appointed? I shall be in Springfield about the 1st and shall hope to see you.

Many thanks for your kind expressions towards me personally and your offers of service. I am still on the Tribune, but don't know when I shall get my walking papers. When I leave I shall hope to do better pecunarily.

Woodstock, Ill. Dec 17, 1864

Gov. Yates:

Dear Sir:

Perhaps it has escaped your mind owing to the many such letters you undoubtedly receive, and are compelled to answer. That Hon. M. L. Joslyn our Representative is a Lower House elect. and myself wrote you concerning a promotion of Adjutant Wm. E. Smith of the 124th Illinois Infantry. You wrote me a letter of reply, stating that when a suitable opportunity offered, you would do all that lay in your power. There is no vacancy in the field offices of his regiment, therefore he has no chance [of?] [promotion?] [there?].

His friends here and with his regiment think they see in the the new Veteran Corps now being raised by Gen. Hancock, a fit opportunity. Adjutant Smith has served two years and a half in the Army, and was officially complimented for his bravery in the battle of Grand Gulf and Champion Hills, in which last battle he was severely wounded. [illegible]

[illegible] this Veteran Corps is designed to be officered by such as he. Could you Governor give his permission to come home and recruit men, with a view to securing a Major's commission in one of the Regiments to be got up from this state. Perhaps you have power to secure his commission right out. If you will do so, or use your influence to do so, rest assured that the friends of Adjutant Smith of the 124th Illinois who are numerous and influential hereabouts, will be your friends true and steadfast. The Adjutant is endorsed by Gen. John A. Logan, his former division commander, also by Gen. Slocum on whose staff he served for a short time. And by Gens. [Leggett?], Force, M, L. Smith, and [illegible], under whom he has served at different times.

Please answer at your earliest convenience, and oblige.

Your obedient Servant,

Abraham E. Smith

Smith Abraham

Abraham E. Smith
