<text>
Bloomington Dec. 11th

Gov. Yates

The apology due you for thus intruding myself upon your time and attention, you will find in the statement which, after long hesitation I have concluded to make - trusting to the noble and generous impulses of your nature for pardon should the liberty I am taking be unwarrantable and the request I make unreasonable --- I am unused to beg - for scarce anything else would I --

My husband Delos Carson enlisted in the U.S. service about Oct. 28th 1862 in the 3rd Ills. Cavalry - Co. I.

He served as private until some time in November or December of the following year when he recruited and was commissioned Captain of Battery D. 1st Alabama Heavy Artillery (Colored) -- afterwards 6th U. S. Heavy Artillery -- a part of which regiment you are aware helped make up the garrison at Fort Pillow - April last--

My Husband was of the number who survived the battle to be cruelly murdered after laying down his arms - for proof of which I beg leave to refer you to the published report of the Investigating Committee upon the conduct of the war &.c.

His body was placed in a coffin & [illegible] so that I could have it removed to this place - The season has arrived when I could best have it done & my greatest desire is to have it accomplished -- Leaving home - his business was sacrificed -- He served faithfully & well never leaving his post for once to visit even me ---

I have supported myself & child by teaching thus far - but my salary is too small (and I have received nothing from Government yet) to allow me the means of defraying the expense of a trip to the Fort & back with my husbands body -- a vacation occurs in our school between the 22nd of this & the 7th of next month. Could you among your constant acts of mercy and generosity give me a pass so that during my vacation I may accomplish that which next to my country's salvation is my intensest desire --- In giving my husband - I gave my all -- a costly sacrifice - if he had met his fate other [illegible] wise I might have felt a free one --- I address you upon this subject because you have shown yourself so preeminently the friend of the soldier & the unfortunate -- I might refer you to Kersey Fell or Judge Davis in regard to this statement -- Begging pardon for

Gov.

I thank you for your very kind and interesting letter - and with pleasure I reply to your question. - I was a good deal like yourself and thought there would be no opposition for Senator. but it seems there is to be an effort. - Mr Washburne has declared himself a Candidate, and he has been trying to join teams with Gen'l Logan and Gen'l Palmer to try & secure my defeat. - Whether Logan & Palmer have consented to become candidates I do not know. I saw your Representative Mr Simpson today and he says he is not com-

I hope you will have what influence you can brought to bear upon him. without telling him it is suggested by me. - It hardly seems fair to try and get up an opposition to me now. when it is remembered that two years ago the Union Republicans voted for me unanimously for Senator against Richardson and our Union friends have everywhere held out encouragements to justify me in beleiving that if we carried the Legislature, I would be their Candidate for U.S. Senator. - also that the Union party voted for such a result, among others at the late election. also that Farnsworth's Congressional district at this last convention of delegates, from every county voted unanimously that I was their first, last and only choice. also that numerous county conventions (including Sangamon) voted the secure thing, and many

Also when it is an indisputable fact, I suppose, that nineteen out of every twenty of our Union voters, and nearly all our Soldiers in the field desire my Election. It is also a fact that Washburne, Palmer & Logan each has a high and lucrative position already, and will be in the public service anyhow while if I am not elected I will have to retire from the public service, which I would not like to do during the existence of the trouble in which our country is involved.

I will say however that so far I have most favorable reports from the various members, and my election seems very certain if a fair Expression can be had.

I would like to have as near a unanimous vote as possible, as that would give me a favorable recommendation to the Senate, & to the country, and a position of greater influence for my State and for my friends. - I have have had a good deal

of Legislative experience, six years in the Legislature, and four years in Congress, and having been the intimate friend of Mr Lincoln for 25 years I think I would have as much consideration at his hands and at the hands of the members of his Cabinet (with all of whom I am personally acquainted) in getting justice for our State, as any man who might be sent there. - I think both Mercer and Henderson would like to see me there, and, therefore I request that you will take some pains in the two Counties, and also in Warren & McDonough, to be sure that the Representation & Senator are right.

S. S. Phelps, Esq.

Dear Friend,

I thank you for your very kind and interesting letter - and with pleasure I reply to your question. I was a good deal like yourself and thought there would be no opposition for Senator, but it seems there is to be an effort. Mr. Washburne has declared himself a candidate, and he has been trying to join teams with Gen'l Logan and Gen'l Palmer to try and secure my defeat. Whether Logan & Palmer have consented to become candidates I do not know. I saw your Representative Mr. Simpson today and he says he is not committed. I hope you will have what influence you can, brought to bear upon him, without telling him it is suggested by me. It hardly seems fair to try and get up an opposition to me now, when it is remembered that two years ago the Union Republicans voted for me unanimously for Senator against Richardson and our Union friends have everywhere held out encouragement to justify me in believing that if we carried the Legislature, I would be their candidate for U. S. Senator. Also that the Union party voted for such a result, among others at the late election, also that Farnsworth's congressional district at their last convention of delegates, from every county voted unanimously that I was their first, last and only choice- also that numerous county conventions (including Sauganion) voted the same thing and many other county conventions offered to do the same thing (including my own county of Morgan), but I reuqested them not to do so as that was well enough understood. Also when it is an indisputable fact., I suppose, that nineteen out of every twenty of our Union voters, and nearly all our Soldiers in the field desire

my election. It is also a fact that Washburne, Palmer & Logan each has a high and lucrative position already, and will be in the public service anyhow, while if I am not elected, I will have to retire from the public Service, which I would not like to do during the extstence of the troubles in which our country is involved.

I will say however that so far I have most favorable reports from the various members, and my election seems very certain if a fair expression can be had.

I would like to have as near a unanimous vote as possible as that would give me a favorable recommendation to the senate and to the country, and a position of greater influence for my state and for my friends. I have had a good deal of Legislative experience, six years in the Legislature, and four years in congress, and having been the intimate friend of Mr. Lincoln for 25 years I think I would have as much consideration at his hands and at the hands of the members of his cabinet (with all of whom I am personally acquainted) in getting justice for our state, as any man who might be sent there. I think both Mercer (CO) and Henderson (CO) would like to see me there and therefore I request that you will take some pains in the two counties, and also in Warren & McDonough to be sure that the Representative & Senator are right. Please let me hear from you and believe me most sincerely

Your friend

Rich. Yates.

Yours of_____ was duly received. In accordance with your suggestion I showed it to Mr Medill. He was pleased with it. He says he shall stand aloof from the fight and Keep the Tribune perfectly neutral; that his preferences are with you, and that he hopes you may succeed, and thinks you will when the time of election comes. I learn (not from him) that parties in Washburne's interest have asked that the columns of the Tribune be thrown open to them, for the publication of affidavits affecting your character for sobriety etc. and that Mr Medill refused to accede to the demand. He would have nothing to do with attacks upon you. It was said to Medill that you were "drunk" at Fulton, and that affidavits could be provided to that effect. I told M. that it was a d__d lie, and that I was willing to make affidavit to the fact that you left Fulton sober etc.

Dear Governor.

I herewith Enclose the substance of a Letter that I desire you to have Copied and sign it, if you can do so Consistently.

The facts are these, the young man Wait was my Cashier for about six years, a smart active fellow and when the war broke out, he left a young beautiful Wife and one Child for the service, some Eighteen Months ago he received an Ensigns Commission and since then has been Acting in that Capacity on the Mississippi, about the last of October he received Letters from Chicago informing him that his wife was unfaithful, and advizing him to return home immediately, his Officer in Command Could not give him a leave, but sent him from the Mouth of Red River to Cairo to Rear Admiral Lee

for his leave, when he arrived at Cairo he learned that the admiral had gone up to Paduca, he did not go to Mound City at all, but came directly to Chicago, and reported to the Admiral from here, he has not seen the Admiral at all, but on writing to a friend immediately on his arrival here he was advized to go immediately to Mound City, he did so and reported to the Comodore who informed him that the least penalty he would get would be disgrace and to serve as a Common sailor for the balance of his term, his friends think that with a friend to go to Washington with your Letter, & others from Citizens here making a full Explanation to Mr Arnold that Secy Wells will be induced to accept his resignation, and save him from this disgrace, he is a good fellow young and brave and loves his wife and baby, if you can sign this Letter do so and return to me by first mail

Yours Truly

Wm. L. Church

Have just recieved your dispatch to Meet Judge Miller at Tremont, Will be there, Mart C is here,

I filled it until the Seventeenth {17th} of Dec 1862. At which time the Hains. Bluff expedition started from Memphis Tenn. At that time I was sick with Camp Diareah & refused to give up a state [illegible] to a Captain of the Regt. for which I was [illegible ] to the Ranks. I continued to grow worse & did not do much duty till the Sixth of Jan 1863 after which time I was sent north with the Chaplain on sick furlough.

I was then so poorly that I could not return & was not able to undertake the voyage till Nov. 1863. About the middle of the Month I started on my trip south all alone feeling all the time that I was liable to be picked up as a deserter.

I reached New Orleans the 1st day of December & reported to the Officer Comanding & was sent to the Convalescent Camp at that time commanded by Maj Peter Davidson of Peoria Ill. The officers have failed to send me a description [ ] & I have written them several times about it. I belonged to Company C of the Regt. Maj Wm. J. Conkling of Springfield has my discharge in his possession but says he is unable to do anything for me until those papers are processed.

My health still remains so that I cannot labor. I was examined by Dr. [illegible] of this City.

A HOME AND EDUCATION FOR THE SOLDIER'S CHILD.

The rapid increase of applications to the NEW YORK STATE VOLUNTEER INSTITUTE, and the constant demand upon the public for charities growing out of the war, has induced its Proprietors to adopt such means of raising funds for its maintenance and support as may in a measure relieve those disposed to aid the enterprise, by changing an actual donation to a purchase, which shall at one and the same time be assisting a noble cause, and prove a profitable investment.

This Institution was established some fifteen months since, by Mrs. F. LEWELLYN YOUNG, at Suspension Bridge, Niagara County, N. Y., for the purpose of furnishing a home to, and educating, the sons of deceased or disabled Officers and Soldiers, left destitute by the casualties of war, and whose fathers were stricken down in defence of the Union, and if the requisite funds can be obtained it will be made a NATIONAL INSTEAD OF A STATE INSTITUTION.

The education imparted at this Institution is of a solid, practical character, and military science and drill constitute an especial feature, fitting the cadets for any position that they may be called upon to fill in after life.

That the field of usefulness may be enlarged by accommodating the increasing number of orphan children an appeal is made to the army and the public to aid this noble work of benevolence, and it is believed that such an appeal cannot fail to meet a hearty and generous response from all.

No Institution in the country is more richly deserving the sympathy and charity of the public than this, and none is doing more good than this, though yet in its infancy. Every patriotic citizen should feel that in bestowing charity here he is relieving the wants and sufferings of children--the children of those men who faced the enemies of our common country, fought the minions of rebellion, and gave up their lives as a holy sacrifice.

Shall it be said that the country was ungrateful for these sacrifices, that the orphan children of our soldiers were neglected and left to want and misery in consequence of the ingratitude of a people for whose freedom their fathers died?

In order, therefore, to furnish shelter, food, clothing, and a liberal education to these children we propose to ask fifty thousand subscriptions at two dollars each. Each subscriber will receive the full value of his money in a fine large steel-plate Portrait of either the

PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, LIEUT.-GEN. GRANT, OR ANY OF THE CORPS COMMANDERS,

That may be designated, and also a CERTIFICATE representing a SHARE in the distribution of a number of

Farms, Houses, and Lots in and near the City of New York;

THE DISTRIBUTION

To take place on Washington's Birthday, February 22d, 1865,

On the Plan of the Art Union, and all the Profits accruing to be devoted to the BENEFIT OF THE INSTITUTION mentioned.

The portraits referred to are reckoned among the finest works of art in this country. The engraver--J. C. BUTURE, Esq., of New York City--has secured a very enviable reputation, and he pronounces these works the best that he has ever produced.

Col. YOUNG has appointed as the Treasurer of this Association, Capt. HENRY R. RANDALL, late of the 14th N. Y. Artillery, who is authorized to obtain subscriptions. For that purpose he has opened an Office in the City of New York, and his address is P. O. Box 4,262, New York City.

Agencies for the enterprise will also be established in every town in the country.
