Sir. Yours Containing Notice that Mr. Wm. G. Greene Would pay $200.00 being part of Interest Due from you to B.F. Beekman is received and am Induced to answer the same for two reasons, First, admit the Interest to have been $200.00 on the 1st of July / 63 it certainly would seem to me to be more than that on the 3rd Day of August of / 63 and you Do not do business that way yourself neither would you allow others to Do it for you. (Secondly) You seem to think in the close of your-note that I am Disposed to Impose upon you if I had the powers - I am Very Sorry that you should thus conclude for I know it is not my will or inclination. But sir - I hold it good that men should always Do right and we ask for nothing but our own. and Mr. Green received the same notice

that you Did and sent me a check by mail for only $200.00 Which I credited in part payment of Interest only and I suppose he said proper to Inform you thus that Led you to your conclusions and Furthermore Mr Green's evading the 2% I would not suppose would be any apology for you or that it should be the means of your censuring me, thus. Now sir, Green and Beekman originally agreed to pay the 12% you signed the notes for- the reason that your name is thereunto appended Beekman still agrees to pay it. Green seeks to evade it and no Doubt has thus reported to you. Now you can all get clear of Paying it By Law I know neither Do we intend to try to enforce the collection of the 2% By Law but we Do think we are entitled to it by the contract and will receive it as a great favor if you with the balance will come out and either refuse to pay it or walk up to the point and meet us fairly and further-

more if We Do not get the 2% Extra we certainly shall enforce the collection of the Notes with the Legal rate of Interest as soon as We shall Deem it proper I regret that Mr. Green should take the course towards me that he Does in misrepresenting my acts when some of them towards you have been under his knowledge and Instructions but I have Lived long enough to know that we frequently Soon (learn?) are (illegible) unconscious of it at the time And you to may yet Live to Learn that such is the case. Act as Duty may Dictate to you relative to answering this Note But I would take it as a favor would you Do so. I shall try to meet the parties at 11 may. Beekmans on the 18th to finally settle this 2% one way or the other when I Would Like to have your Decision to. You can Inform them and they can act for you Mr. Green has not yet paid the money nor give any notice to me

Hon R Yates

Gov. etc: - Your kind and encouraging letter of July 31st must have arrived some days since, but as I have been absent in the "good work," it was not perused until to-day. Permit me a moment of your time for a reply. -

I have been continually upon the stump in this (Pope), Hardin and Johnson counties. Everywhere the greatest enthusiasm prevails. I trust, sir, that we will have not the slightest trouble in raising the necessary number of men.

And now, sir, having nearly discharged my duty in response to the call of yourself and the War Department, permit me to tend my own services as a volunteer in defense of the institutions of our country.

During all of last winter I was in the employ of the Kentucky Military Board as Drillmaster. In March my health failed me, since which time I have been editing the Commercial in this place. I have numerous certificates of qualification (including one from Grig. Gen. Chas F. Smith, since deceased, then commanding post at Paducah.)

I know you are besieged by applications of this character, but you must excuse me for asking, for if a man does not ask he will seldom receive, in this office-hunting age. A detail to some one of the camps

of instruction would probably enable me to attain a position without farther assistance.

If you can confer a favor of this kind, I have only to promise that so long as I am identified with the newspaper forces - and that is my profession - so long will I esteem it a privilege to support your Excellency in all patriotic labors. I could have raised a company, but I preferred rather to address the people in behalf of the great cause we have so much at heart and let others enroll the men, thereby avoiding the "Butternut" charge of self-interest.

Respectfully

James W Howard

Editor "Commerical"

James W. Howard, Editer Commercial, Golconda, Aug. 12.

Asks to be detailed to one of the camps of instruction; desires position of drill master. R.

<text>Scott Wike Lucas was an Illinois attorney and politician. Born in Cass County, Illinois, on February 19, 1892, Lucas attended public schools and Illinois Wesleyan University, where he played baseball and other college sports. While in college, during his summers, he played baseball in the Three-I League, a semiprofessional baseball league organized in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. After college, Lucas attended law school and was admitted to the bar in 1915.

Lucas served in the United States Army during World War I, rising to the rank of lieutenant. He would later continue his military association by serving as commander of the Illinois Department of the American Legion.

After serving as state's attorney for Mason County in the 1920s, Lucas ran in the 1932 Democratic primary as a candidate for the United States Senate from Illinois; however, he lost his primary bid to William H. Dieterich. Governor Henry Horner then appointed Lucas chairman of the State Tax Commission, which Lucas directed from 1933 to 1935. In 1934, Lucas won election to the United States House of Representatives from Illinois. Four years later, he won election to the U.S. Senate and was reelected in 1944.

Following President Harry S. Truman's reelection in 1948, Lucas became Senate Majority Leader. He served in that capacity only two years, losing the 1950 general election in Illinois to Republican Everett Dirksen. Lucas died on February 22, 1968.

The Scott W. Lucas Collection consists of 38 photographs from Lucas' early life and political career. In addition to images of such influential American politicians as John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, the collection contains several political cartoons satirizing Lucas and other politicians.</text>
