<text>The Janotta Family Collection contains photographs relating to conductor/composer Alfredo Jannotta, his wife, activist and author Stella Skiff Jannotta, and their family. Several photographs belonged to their son, Navy Rear Admiral A. Vernon Jannotta.

Alfredo Jannotta immigrated from Italy by way of London to Boston in 1865 where he taught voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. He married his first wife, Alice Prudy and they had a son, Edward, before Alfredo moved to Cincinnati in 1868. Alfredo spent 12 years in Cincinnati teaching vocal performance as well as conducting the Cincinnati Choral Society and organizing the first Cincinnati orchestra. He moved back to Boston in 1881 but moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1882 and finally to Chicago in 1888 where he established himself as a vocal teacher.

While teaching in Chicago, Jannotta taught vocal lessons to Stella Skiff whom he married in 1893. Skiff was the daughter of Iowa businessman Vernon William Skiff and his wife, Mary Frances Coffin. Her brother, Frank Vernon Skiff founded the Jewel Tea Company which later grew into a national grocery store chain including Jewel, Osco, Eisner, and White Hen.

Skiff continued her singing career after marrying Jannotta and briefly taught lessons. Between 1894 and 1898, she gave birth to sons A. Vernon, Francis, and Joseph. Between 1917 and 1918, Stella adopted three foster daughters, Margaret, Marion, and Betty (Elizabeth).

In the early 20th century she began taking an active interest in causes including the suffrage movement and socialism. Stella Jannotta joined the Chicago Political Equality League (predecessor to the Chicago League of Women Voters) in 1907. She wrote for the propaganda arm of the organization, including a 1916 article entitled "Public Opinion" which she revisted several times over the following decades.

A. Vernon Jannotta, the oldest son on Alfredo and Stella, served in the United States Navy in both World War I and World War II. He rose through the ranks of the Navy and the Naval Reserves, eventually retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1954. Jannotta received several military honors including the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart.

Jannotta began working at the Jewel Tea Company in 1919 and held several positions at the company for the next 50 years.

It is reported here that another has been appointed Postmaster here in Wm's place.

The Editor of the paper published here is the man. He is of the same stripe with our Member of Congress Ingersol---both came into our party for a consideration personal and are alike very unreliable. Ingersol has given Hobbs our Editor the Post Office in consideration that he puff him & tc It is custom to allow Members of Congress to control appointments in his District I made very little effort to see Mr Lincoln when in Washington. He was crowded beyond all decency. Senators & members of Congress said it was about an impossibility to get

in to see him. Ingersol is giving Something to all the Editors in this District to make himself popular so far as they can do that thing for him

Wm informs me that this Post Office has become, since his appointment, so large that the appointment of a Post Master for this Office must be confirmed by the Senate and thinks it possible that fact may have been overlooked. if so, the newly appointed Post Master must wait for confirmation by the Senate. Now Gov Yates is just about as hostile to Ingersol as can be and said to me last winter at Springfield "I would not take Ingersols word of honor for five minutes" If there was no confirmation of Hobbs appointment Gov. Yates can control this matter if he will Will you not See Gov Yates, and ask him if he cannot & will not stop these miserable [Kinlings?] from making Merchandise of the Republican Party. William feels as if his hour had come---what to do he knows not It is a Sad prospect for him. The Post Office Seems to suit him admirably

If Governor Yates would undertake the job he can keep William in the Post Office Will you not make a personal appeal to him in Wm Behalf.

I am with all regards &c

"The feeling against the republicans & all not strongly in favor of slavery is intense & as the government will probably send troops down the road & some of the inhabitants are determined not to let them go-there is a strong probability of a war here & if there is my chances are poor. I want father to consider this well & advise me what to do, but by no means to come here

At a meeting here last week the people agreed to tear up the sails & burn the bridge above here" (This refers to a long bridge across Big Muddy river four miles north of Carbondale) "if troops were sent down the road & they will probably try to do one or both I do not feel very much excited-not enough to leave my work or lose my sleep but think it best to consult about the matter"

I have written him in return to do nothing nor to say any thing to irritate these people. Thatt the Legislature of Illinois will meet in a few days when treason will be considered & measures adopted to prevent its commission that if they publish their proceedings he should save copies of the

paper-if not make a record of the officers the speakers the resolution maker & the active men who move in the matter I expressed my belief that when they learn where Douglas stands & what the undivided sentiment of the north is they will slink away into that obscurity that they only emerge from to do the works of darkness My family removed to Carbondale over a year ago Here we became instantly obnoxious & my sons have often been threatened with personal violence for sentiments I have uttered They would not threaten me why I know not but did once assault James when a cripple three at least resolved to beat him but he escaped & fearing he would kill them they never after attacked him The society of Carbondale or rather the want of it drove us all from that place to Columbus Ohio except James If I did not know that all who uphold secession are mad men I should have no fear that James would be molested He is [prudent?] & brave 28 years old & is not without friends I do not know as I ought to have troubled you with this letter at all I know what sort of a meeting has been held in DuQuoin & in other counties north east of there but it is probably well enough to send some school master into that part of Egypt which lies in Jackson Union Williamson Saline Franklin Johnson & a few other counties to teach them that there is such a crime as treason & that treason will be punished I can refer you for the character of our family to Frank Blair here to Gov. Dennison of Columbus or Sect Chase & perhaps Mr. Hatch of Springfield may know something of us or at least of the mother of my children if he does not of their father.

Gov. Yates

My son Charles Gage who resides in this city received a letter from his brother James [illegible-L.?] Gage who has a machine-smiths & plow shop at Carbondale Jackson County Ill. from which the following is a copy

Mrs Frances D Gage has often spoken of Mr. [illegible-Hocket?] & he may remember her Yours Respectfully

When I first suggested to the Govr. the idea of my undertaking to form a regiment, there were three companies enlisting here and there seemed to be a pretty general expressed opinion that if I would take hold of the matter, a regiment could be got up in this vicinity in a very short time. I have no doubt that I might then have succeeded very Easily, but those companies have since united with other regiments. it would be much more uncertain now. It is very possible, & indeed very probably that another regiment can be collected here in a reasonable time, & as near as I can judge, very few persons in this section would be more likely to succeed, than myself but I think it scarcely worth while for me to undertake it on condition. I have no desire to act in the matter, merely for the sake of making a figure; I did not ask or expect the Gov. to give me an appointment merely to gratify or benefit me; unless the condition of the country is such as to make it apparent that I might be useful beyond peradventure. I do not conceive it to be my duty to engage in that direction

Dear Sir,

I learned your arrival here, listened to your Speech last evening, & called to see you this A.M. Your Engagements the Clerk told me prevented an interview My object in seeing you was the "Old Story, or petition," for place to learn if it were not in your power to assist me to some position by which I might obtain an honest & respectable livelihood for my family & self. You know, and all acquainted know, that less competent have been favored, men who have expended nothing, while I have expended all, to advance the interests of Our Country

Judge Parks of Aurora informed me that he had flattering prospects of a good position

If there be anything in the way of a position in the Pay Dept. that I might succeed in obtaining, please be Kind enough to inform me. Without any expression of egotism it seems as though I were possessed of sufficient intelligence and had expended sufficient, in the raising of men directly, & indirectly to guarantee me a position, to say the least, where I might receive a sufficient salary, or pay, to give to my family, a decent support. It would take 2 years to reinstate myself in business, as previous to the War Consequently I petition, if in your power, for some place by

The day of Election has come, & will soon be over, when I hope, in the name of Heaven, partisan feelings will be carried to a tomb from which they shall not be resurrected, until the last trump of Rebellion has sounded & Peace & quiet & National & Social prosperity be restorded to the land

If Politicians desire a prolongation of this War they can have it for a time. But I tell you Governor Yates, the People, are daily & hourly arming themselves with a weapon which will one day fall with destructive force upon the heads of all intriguing, dishonest & deceptive Politicians. That weapon is intelligence They are informing themselves, that they are the Masters & their Representatives, the Servants. And the time is not far distant when a recognition of this fact will be forced with killing weight upon the Partisan Representatives of our Country

There is but one successful mode of destroying the Rebellion, & restoring Peace. That mode is A Unity of Action, and an Honesty of purpose on the part of loyal men.
