</p><p>I was in Springfield a few days since, to see you on some business which I will state below.
</p><p>I was a "Musician" in the 29th Ill Regt and while we were out on a march through "Missouri," I got a hurt from which I was discharged against my will. I have proof of this from Col. Rearden.
</p><p>I will now proceed to tell you my business in Springfield. Since I have been discharged I have assisted in getting a great many <u>"Arms" </u> from off of the Steam Boats at Cairo.

<p>No longer than last Friday I assisted the U. S. Police & U. S. Marshall to search one Str T. L. Patton which we found a number of muskets and four Horses, that was from Pittsburgh Ldg Tennessee.
</p><p>I also know of very near three Hundred muskets and have seen a great many more passing upon the Boats, which I could not take. yet I know they belong to the Government.
</p><p>If I had of had authority I could of got some as I came up yesterday but I had none. I told them officers at Cairo that I was going to try and get such a job
</p><p>I can give you References if you wish then and I also ask you if it is in

I expected to have ere this, some instructions or orders from Gov. Yates concerning the matter, but have received none, except directions to effect the transfer of certain men in the Marine Hospital here, to Quincy, Ill. This, as I wrote him, cannot be done, because the Hospital at Quincy is already full.
</p><p>I have just seen Surgeon Madison Mills, Medical Director in this Department, and requested the transfer to Springfield, Ill., of men whose term of service has nearly expired - so that they might there be mustered out with their

<p>regiments. But as there is no General Hospital at Springfield his orders, which he receives from Dr. R. C. Wood, Ass't Surgeon General, Louisville, Ky. do not permit him to make such transfer. Surgeon Mills appears quite willing to accommodate, so far as his orders will allow as is shown by the fact that he has, at my request, directed the Surgeons in charge of the U. S. Marine, and Jefferson Barracks, Hospitals to grant furloughs to such men as are above referred to.
</p><p>Now I should like some specific instructions in regard to this matter of transfers
</p><p>1. Are there any U. S. Gen. Hospitals in the State of Illinois beside the one at Quincy? If so, where?
</p><p>2. Can I be authorized to procure from Ass't Surgeon General Wood, Louisville, Ky., orders for transfer in special cases?
</p><p>One other question, only indirectly connected with the subject. Are all regiments mustered out of the service at Springfield, on only such as were there mustered in?

The Black-Abbot Family Collection contains images of several members of the Black and Abbot Families stemming from Helene Black Abbot and her husband, Stephen. Helene Black Abbot was the daughter of Adaline Griggs Black and John C. Black and the granddaughter of Clark Robinson Griggs, mayor of Urbana and a member of the Illinois House of Representatives. <br /><br />Stephen Abbot was the son of William and Elise Burghalter Abbot and grandson of Stephen and Martha Gutterson Abbot. Stephen Abbot's brother and sister, Henry W.
