Hon Richard Yates
Dear Sir
I am confined in jail in this city charged with a crime of which I am entirely innocent. I am a resident of the City of New York. I am an orphan and without relations. I have served two years and thirty days in the service of the United States and have been twice honorably discharged on the expiration of my term of service. I have participated in the following actions, at the taking of Fort Hatteral and Fort Clark the seven days battles before Richmond, Bristoe and Catletts stations, 2nd Bull Run, the two battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorville. I am now only eighteen years of age and willing to serve my country again in the field. but to be locked up here like a dog in a kenned charged with a crime that I never committed is hard and cruel, I am a stranger in the west, and have no friends, hoping that you will aid a suffering soldier, I remain your obedient servant. Captain Ewing served in the Civil War, rising from the rank of private to captain in Company B, 128th Indiana Infantry, seeing action during the Atlanta Campaign under General William Tecumseh Sherman. His wife, Louisa, served as Postmaster for a brief period after her husband’s death and remarried in 1881 to Jehu Z. Powell.

Before Captain Ewing’s death, he and Louisa had one daughter, Jennie Ewing (1868-1923), who married Charles E. Marshall in 1887. Charles E.

My Dear Sir

I am just on my return from the meeting of our Presbytery at Golconda I have just signed a petition to the Gov on behalf of Rev John Mack as a suitable person for a Chaplaincy in some one of our Illinois regiments. In the impetuosity of his soul he volunteered as a private in the ranks. But he is worthy the place we ask for him and a word on his behalf to his Excellency The Gov from you may be

of avail. No doubt you often have solicitations of this kind but perhaps not from any of your old friends in Southern Ill. I am pleasantly located in Olney where I have been for nearly five years. Our Synod meets in your city of Springfield in a few weeks when I hope to pay my compliments in person

Kind regards to Mrs Dubois & Family

Very Truly Yours

The chaplains are elected by the officers of companies & the field officers and appointed by Colonel. You had if you desire to serve Mr Mack better write him the facts

John Crozier.

Col. Dubois

The chaplains are elected by the officers of companies & the field officers and appointed by Colonel. You had if you desire to serve Mr Mack better write him the facts
