Marshalle Ills

Dear Sir, it was my intention to go to Springfield this week, but learning day before yesterday in Marshalle, that you had gon to Consult the Gov, in reference to another Vol Regiment in this locality, I declined going; and wrote to you at Springfield, stating that I wished you to use your influence to secure me the position of Major of a Regiment, if you thought me worthy of such a position. I write this supposing perhaps you did not receive mine at Springfield. I have an anxiety to go into the Service again, and believe that experience in Military and Standing as an officer would entitle me to such a position.

If you succeed in obtaining permition to rase a regiment I would like much to go in with you as Major. Will you give this matter your consideration and let me know. I have a paper from Coln. John Tidson of the 10th Ills seting fourth my standing as an officer etc, which is now in the hands of Gov. Yates.

As my minde has been directed from medicine for the last twelve months, and have not had sufficient time to post up, as I would like, to go before the medical board, I would prefer the Majority of a Regiment, that of Surgeon.

Yours Truly

Darwin Clark Co. Ills. Aug. 11 1862,

His Excellency Gov Yates;

Dear Sir, having supposed that it would be your policy to officer the new Regts called out, with experienced officers - those who have seen Service in the field of battle, I wrote you some days since, offering my services; and also sending a certificate from Colm. Tilson of the 10th Ills. as to my fidelity and qualifications as an officer. As I have received no answer from you, I suppose you did not receive my letter. I would say that I have served some ten months as Commander of a Company in the 10th Regt., and feel myself qualifyed to fill the office of Lieut. Coln. or Major. What I would desire is the Majority of Regt. I content myself by writing to you, as I know your former policy has been to make appointments upon merit alone without the voice of the Regt., I can furnish you good authority as to my standing, etc.

Last Sept. I [acceiled?' a company with the intention of geting a Surgeons position, but failing to fill my company amediatly I deemed it my duty to remain with them till they were fully organized and able and efficient officers placed over them. My mind has been diverted from medicine for the last twelve months, and would prefer a field office.

Hoping you will give this your favorable concideration, and answer me soon, I remain Yours.

John D. Mitchell.

Darwin, Clark Co. Ills.

P.S. I send you a note from Colonel Tillson. Please return it to me. T.D.M.

You will please have him [illegible] to C. H. Heath Sheriff of this county. Hon E. B. Washburne has just written to be sure and have him put through. Hoping to hear from you in the matter and in such a way thus the scoundrel will get his deserts.

Waukegan, Ill October 14th 1864

Dear Governor

In addition to the matter of which my other note, enclosed, treats I want to ask of you cannot come up and address our people at this place on Tuesday the 25th inst. We are going to have a time here on that day. Our farmers propose bringing into town a wagon train of produce for the soldiers similiar to that which Lake County contributed to the Northwestern Sanitary Fair last Fall at Chicago for which they received so much praise from the people and through the papers

They want to see Gov. Yates and hear him speak. Ferry told me you promised him that you would come up sometime before the election and talk to our people. Ferry will probably be home from Nashville at that time and I know Mrs Ferry expects a visit from Mrs. Yates.

Will you not authorize me to announce you for Tuesday afternoon Oct 25th?

Sincerely your friend

Jas. Y. Cory

Governor

Justice of the Peace Jno. E. Clarkson of this place sends you today my affidavit for a requisition on the Gov. of Wis for a forger who is now in jail at Racine. I know this morning that the Circuit Court of Racine Co. is to convene next week. I write this to ask of you that you will give the papers dispatch because I am afraid the time is so short that the fellow may be discharged before they get around. They have very little evidence against him at Racine, which here

we think we have got the "dead wood" on him.

He is the same fellow who has been traveling the country collecting money from Postmasters on forged drafts purporting to be drawn by Hon. Jas. Harlan Treas. Congressional Committee, for political purposes. I believe your P. M. at Springfield was taken in by him, that office appears on his memorandum among others, as having paid him $100.

The committee are very anxious that the fellow should be brought into this state for trial for the reasons above stated. I have a letter from Washburne saying it. Could you not have the requisition sent sooner by telegraphing the Gov. of Wis? Please hurry it up as fast as possible.

Truly Yours

J. Y. Cory

Truly Yours

J. Y. Cory
