Dear Sir

I beg leave to respectfully represent to your Excelency, the destitute condition of this Town and vacinity, and the perilous situation that we occupy in consequence of the Beligerent attitude assumed by our neighbours in Northern Kentucky, they are all the time recruiting and raising companies for the aid of the South, and we know not what day or night we may be attacked by them in this portion of the State where nothing but the Ohio River intervenes between us and the rebbels. it would be very easy for them to bring a company of their volunteers over here before the started them South, and burn and destroy our Town, and Kill off its defenseless citizens, which the have threatened to do.

We have a home guard organized, and there has been a company of volunteers raised here whos services will be tendered your Honour this week, and if they are accepted, and ordered away we will be in a still more defenceless condition.

To render our situation more critical a few of our citizens having southern sympathies have left this side of the river and are now in Ky

making speeches and other ways inflaming the people of that State against us. denouncing us as abolitionists and that a man coming from that side of the River would be liable to be mobed and maltreated on acct of his political opinions, and that they were obliged to leave, and when they sent for their property, it was forcibly taken off the Ferry boat and confiscated these kind of misrepresentations are being made for the purpose of inciting an armed mob to come upon us

We therefore respectfully ask your Honour if you can, to send, us in haste one hundred guns and one [ps?] cannon. I will give you ample security that they will be returned when called for. For the truth of my statement, and loyalty to the government, I refer to Col J C Sloan surveyor of the post of Cairo. And to Gen Prentis commandant at the same place, and Jno Olney at or near Cairo

We applied for guns at Cairo but was informed that they could not supply us

We applied for guns at Cairo but was informed that they could not supply us

with sentiments of esteem

I am your obt servant

Hon. Gov.

There is a question that I would very much like to have decided as I am the one conserned The circumstances are these. I am a citizen of this State and have been for eleven years. on the 2nd of last month I hired as carpenter in the Quartermasters Dep't. at St. Louis for six months unless sooner discharged I was sent with others to little Rock Ark. and on account of Ill. health was discharged on the 10th

of the present month after recieving my discharge it was neccesary to obtain a pass to return home and to obtain a pass I was obliged to be enrolled in the malitia of that State (Ark) then I had to obtain a furlow and the best I could do was a furlo for 30 days from the 10th of Aug. 1864

Now the question is am I obliged to return and go into the Malitia of that or any other State except old Illinois. I am not the only one in the same fix from Ill. and we would like very much to have the discision of our Gov. and know what to do

We cannot see why we are beholden to that State for anything

I have the honor to be your obt servant,

John H. Agnew

He hired as a carpenter on 2nd of Aug. and was sent to Little Rock, and was discharged on 10th inst. on account of ill-health, and when he applied for a pass to come home he had to enroll himself in the Militia of that state and then only could get a furlough for 30 days. He wants to know if he must go back there to serve in their Militia.

John H. Agnew

Agnew John H.

Earlville Sept. 26th 64

Dr Sir I write you from here (where my office is) tho if you remember me at all, it will be as a resident of Indianapolis (my home), who once in 1861 was introduced to you in your Auditors Office by a letter from John L Ketcham Esqr, and whom you piloted over to Mr Lincolns house

I write you now, to have you see your Governor and have him, send an Agent here and ask that your Illinois paroled men - sent to Camp Chase be transferred to your own Camps. We of Indiana always do this. Our Governor. has a General Standing request here, that all Indiana paroled men coming here, be immediately sent to Indianapolis to him, and it is done. I write now particularly to ask you to have Govr Yates, write a letter to General Cooper who is the Commandant of this Post, requesting him "to send or transfer Lieut John Van Pelt, Quarter Master & A.A.C.S. of 36th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers - who is now a paroled prisoner, at Camp Chase, to him at Springfield. Genl Cooper told me today, that if Govr Yates would do so he would let Lieut Van Pelt go there. The circumstances of

Van Pelts case, justly demand, that he should be allowed to go home now while he can. He has been in Service Since July 1861, and has never been allowed to go home to his Family. He was Chief Commissary of Genl Sheridans Division at Murfeeborough. He and his trains were captured at Lavergne & his [trains?] destroyed.

He was paroled & has been Sent here to rest in Camp Chase until exchanged. He can just as well occupy the time with his family.

He can be at home. His position on Genl Sheridans Staff, is kept open for him and will be. He is an excellent officer. Do have your Governor act to get him a chance to go to his family - for when at Springfield Govr Yates will have the power to let him go on furlough.

I feel strongly in this case. My only Son, was the Chief Quartermaster on the Staff of Genl Jeff C Davis. He & Van Pelt have served together all through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee & other places for a year & a half, and were captured at Lavergne together & came here together. My son was transferred to his home at once - while Van Pelt has to remain here. Do have him transferred home. A mere letter from Govr Yates will do it.

JK Dubois Esqr
