(David Virgil), 1900-1984 Journalist Newspaper editors Newspapers Editorials--Authorship Editorials Illinois--Decatur Description An account of the resource David Virgil Felts, a Decatur, Illinois, journalist, was born on January 31, 1900, in Marion, Illinois. Following high school graduation, Felts entered the University of Illinois at Champaign. In college Felts became the “Campus Scout,” the author of a humorous column about college happenings. This position at the university was also held by Gene Shalit, Allen Sherman, and others who later pursed careers in broadcasting and journalism. After receiving an A.B. from the University of Illinois in 1923, Felts became a reporter for the Louisville (Kentucky) Courier Journal. From 1923 until 1926, he worked as a sports editor for the Illinois State Register in Springfield, Illinois, and then served briefly as a United Press reporter. Following a year of post-graduate study at Harvard University, Felts returned to Springfield in 1928 and became an editorial writer and columnist. In December 1935, Felts joined the Lindsay-Schaub chain of newspapers as an editorial writer and moved to Decatur, Illinois. He became editorial page editor for the Decatur Herald and Review in 1958 and two years later, he was editorial page editor for the entire Lindsay-Schaub chain. Felts also wrote his own column, called “Second Thoughts.” The column contained folksy reminiscences about past events and observations on current affairs. Felts officially retired in 1967, but he continued to write his column three times a week for the Lindsay-Schaub newspapers. The column ran until Felts’ real retirement at the age of seventy-five. In 1975, Felts moved to Ft. Pierce, Florida, with his wife. Felts died in March of 1985. Felts, who was interested in local and state history, was a long time member of the Illinois State Historical Society. He served as Society director from 1980 to 1983 and was elected vice-president in 1983. In July 1958, Felts was appointed by Governor William G. Stratton to the Illinois Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission. Seattle W T Jan 20th 1865 Hon R Yates Dr Sir Probably you will remember that in the spring of 1861 you recommended me by letter to be appointed to the position I now hold that of United States Atty for Washington Territory. Considering Illinois almost my native State having resided there from 1844 to 1861, and now living in a Territory which of Course has no political influence, I hesitate less than perhaps I otherwise might to ask a still further favor. One of the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of this Territory an old man from Uniontown Penn is about to return east and will not be an applicant for reappointment. That place will therefore be vacent and I am desirous of obtaining it. Mr Lincoln is better acquainted with me then you are and I think is quite well disposed toward me but you know how it is with him in these matters being pressed on all sides and at all times. If you are disposed to name the matter to the President I will reciprocate in any way I can, but how that will be I have not the slightest idea at present, unless you acept the old equity rule of the will for the deal. But if the President is not disposed to give me <hr /> that position he would confer a great favor upon the people here by sending some good lawyer to fill it. We have but one man on the bench in this Territory who can justly lay any claim to being a respectable lawyer and that is Wyche. The want of ability and fitness for positions on the part of the great majority of the Officers sent here has done more to weaken the administration party and strengthen the opposition than all other courses combined, and the result is today that both branches of our Territorial Legislation is Copperhead to the [backbone?]. McMillan is a 1st Lt in my regiment, he is a good and worthy officer and an intelligent and honest man Has a good education fitting him for any position requiring intelligence in business. Lt. McMillan is a son of the late Rev Edward McMillan formerly of Nashville - is a nephew of Neal S. Young McMillan was living temporarily in <hr /> Lima when the rebellion commenced, and came north and went into our army and has been a gallant soldier, he inlisted as a private soldier in my regiment, was made Sergt Major of my regiment, and after the Battle of Parkers Crossroads where we fought the rebels more than 5 to one and defeated them - he was promoted to his present rank for conspicuous gallantry in that fight - And now I should be very greatly gratified if he could be promoted to the position to which I take pleasure in recommending him - I do this also for the additional reason that the Lt has to such extent been injured in health that he is not now by any means able to stand the fatigues of the march in the capacity of an infantry line officer - Governor if you can do anything for the Lt I shall be in lasting obligations to you for so doing - Vice President Johnson knew McMillan's Father and will give you a very satisfactory account of him while he lived in Lima & Col John Logan can speak of his most excellent character while in his regiment. Deneen Collection Description An account of the resource Charles Samuel Deneen (Republican) served as a one-term member of the Illinois House of Representatives beginning in 1892. He was born in Edwardsville, Illinois, and grew up in Lebanon, Illinois, where his parents were among the founders of McKendree College. Deneen graduated from McKendree College and then attended Union College of Law (now known as Northwestern University Law School). He served as an attorney for the Chicago Sanitary District from 1895-1896 and State’s Attorney for Cook County from 1896-1904. In 1904, Deneen was elected to the first of two terms as Illinois Governor where he was a strong supporter of education issues and the Illinois Waterway. Deneen served one term as the U. S. Senator from Illinois (1925-1931). Stevens was a lawyer, banker, newspaper editor and writer based in Illinois. Stevens was born and educated in Dixon, Illinois. He studied law in Sycamore, Illinois, and was admitted to the bar in 1877. Shortly after that he moved to South Dakota where he operated the Beadle County National Bank until 1890 when he moved to Chicago and worked in a brokerage business. In 1907 Stevens returned to Sycamore, Illinois, where he published the Dixon Weekly Citizen and later the Sycamore Tribune. He retired from the newspaper business in 1928 and was elected mayor of Sycamore in 1931. Governor Henry Horner appointed Stevens to the War Records Division of the office of the Adjutant General. Stevens was a historian who authored several historical works including The Black Hawk War. Stevens used the majority of the items in the collection while researching and writing The Black Hawk War. The Black Hawk War (1832), although brief, has much significance for Native American history. In April, tribal groups of Sauk, Meskwakis, and Kickapoo, led by Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk, crossed the Mississippi River from Iowa into Illinois. Known as the British Band, they claimed lands under the 1804 Treaty of St. Louis, a treaty the whites disputed. Fearful, militia’s fired on the Native American delegation in what led to the Battle of Stillman’s Run, a resounding defeat for the militias. Black Hawk was eventually defeat, however, at the battles of Wisconsin Heights and Bad Axe. Historically, the Black Hawk War legitimized and strengthened forcible relocation of Native American tribes further west. The finding aid for the Frank E. Hardin represented Morgan County in the General Assembly, fought in the Black Hawk War and Mormon War of Hancock County, served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives (1843-1845), and died fighting in the Mexican-American War at the Battle of Buena Vista on February 23, 1844.
