Sir once more allow me to intrude if such it be to give you a few statements as to our advancing to that stand whare Union & the Preservation of the Laws is placed when the election came of hear it was so concidered that if the South Should Secede that egypt must follow I with others thinking more of our country than party began to work but it seemed a mountain that we could not clime we had party feeling to work against and worse than that we had the kindred ties to subdue for a great portion of our People are from Tennessee & other slave states whar they left there Parents there Kindred and old friends this was a hard Rock to move but Let me tell you with Patince and hard talk it can be over come if Judge Sloan could be drawed over it would help but he has greatly Lost his hold upon the people his Son is a warm union boy about 18 every day I can see that the scale is balanceing heavyer upon the goverment sid and I think it will all come right

in a short time you well know that to stop Disunion you must put down men of influence who call themselves Union men
but talk Disunion talk one of those men

of our common countys good to day
a man from Randolph Camp Reports that
the Solders in that camp are much
dissatisfied he say a few days ago the Report
came then that the United States forces
ware comeing and that a great No of them
straddled there horses and Started for

more Southern clime he also says that
the troops from Arkanses are held by far
Rather than a wish to stay when they started for
Randolph from Memphis that they was forced
to go aboard of the Boat he is a deserter and
seems to know all about it Mr Robt Morris from
New Orleans is hear and states that he
saw a man that told him the same as above
I know of no more at Present but if I
should Learn anything I will inform you
I think of my own opinion that the Davis Robers
intend to take fort Pickens before they
do any thing in Virginia I have thought
that they would commence fireing the 6th
or 7th of June So as to help Tennessee get out
you know the excitement is all they live
upon

[Randear?] who recevd the attention of the people Better than I ever Saw in my life my young friend Saul Reper made a short an touching speech the other was at Columbus 6 miles west of Golconda the No in attendance was 11 or 12 hundred they eat their dinner which was excelent in quiet as much So as if eating at a hotel when they was adressed by G. B. Raum who was Listened to for 2 3/4 hours with good attention when he was geting down from the Stand an old lady 70 years old Sleped him on the Shoulder well gru you ar right

you ar for the Union yes says gru I am righ I think [rather?] yes says the old lady and I hope you and all of us will be righter this is the old lady who told some Southn feeling [illegible] if they attempd to Raise a Southn flag She would shoot the first one that attempted it and if they put it up at Knight She would climb the pole and pull it to peaces allow me to Say that Wm W Sloan has come over Lock Stock and barrel he mad a speech at a barbecu heare and said he would fight by the side of any body and fight for the union allow me to intrude lest you might not think it nessary but I am going to ask of you that as the volunteers start from heare on Wednesdy morning I ask you that you pay some attention to there reception at Springfield the Reason I ask this is that there is rather a hard feeling heare towards Republicans and for that Reason I ask that you pay a reasonable Share of warm feeling towards those who go from Egypt for I wish to strike a death blow to demockricy in this part of the world and you I know are not ignorant of the influance the Soulders has upon those they leave behind them I intended to go with this company but my finances will not admit I have a notion to get up a horse or Cavelry Company in this Conty but I will let you know more about it

Dear Sir

Knowing your willingness to lend assistance in any way you can to Illinois sons in the field, I shall presume a little on my acquaintance with you to address you on a matter of considerable interest to the second assistant surgeon of our Regiment Daniel Berry. - he is a Brother in Law of mine, and of course I feel aside from other considerations an interest in his success - our First assistant surgeon has been detached from us for several months - and for some time past our surgeon has been at home and the whole care of the Hospital & our sick has devolved on Dr Berry - and I am sure he has rendered general satisfaction - He got the appointment of assistant surgeon at the time of the organization of the Regt and got an order from Gov Yates to the Board of Medical Examiners to be examined they were so engaged at the time they could not attend to it - but promised they would notify him soon to meet them - and directed that he should go to the Regt in the meantime where he has been ever since - a period of nine months - at the time he got an

order for examinations from Gov Yates he went to Chicago to meet the Board, at of course considerable expense to himself - without accomplishing anything - since then he has heard nothing from the Board although he has written to them on the subject of the Examination several times - He has yet received no commission from the Gov. The commissions of all the other officers of the Regt bear date Oct 3 1862. It seems to me under the circumstances his commission ought to be issued also - If the Board were to order him before them now we could not let him go, as the Regt really needs his services - I have but a bare acquaintance with Gov Yates, and I desire under the circumstances, if you feel that you can consistently with your duty to the service use your influence with the Gov to have his commission issued, and forwarded to him at this place, Berry used to live in your county Lawrence, and I am well satisfied he is in every way fully competent to fill the position he has now held with credit to himself for the last nine months

Your attention to the above request will place under lasting obligations

Your friend truly

Respectfully returned - Dr. Danl Berry was mustered as 2nd Asst Surg Oct 3. 62, but not commissioned, as he never passed the Medical Board, altho a permit has been issued to him for his examination -

A vacancy yet exists and another permit can be sent if desired - A certificate from the Med. Board is required before commission can issue -

His wife, Louisa, served as Postmaster for a brief period after her husband’s death and remarried in 1881 to Jehu Z. Powell.

Before Captain Ewing’s death, he and Louisa had one daughter, Jennie Ewing (1868-1923), who married Charles E. Marshall in 1887. Charles E. Jennie Ewing moved from Indiana to Illinois and is buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.

This collection consists of photographs relating to the Ewing family and the family of Charles E.

I find myself in a dilemma and take this method to get an explanation to it. I saw H. N. Spaulding at Rockford a getting up Teamsters for the Government for general transportation in Rosecrans division He offered me Wagon master at sixty dollars per month & 40 per month for an assistant if we could get up twenty five men & would send us transportation for the same our transportation to be for twenty five or more as I had sixteen up when he left Rockford and I thought I could get more and he agreed that if any thing was wrong that he would write me

or Telegraph as soon as he got to Nashville after waiting one week I proceeded to raise my men in good faith and had the Luck of raising 40 men and a man at Durand also went and raised a company of twenty five on the promise of me to take him on my transportation now sir It has cost me some twenty five dollars and two weeks time & disappointed a good many men as some have sold their teams one has sold out his furniture & sent his wife East & I was offered a situation at more a month as agent but refused it as I think our Government should have men when they call for them Now I do not know where to write to Spaulding nor neither

do I know who to write to in the department But knowing that you are a friend to the cause of the Union & I have done what I could for it sent my two sons one in the 15 Ill Vol and one in the 2 Ill Cav who now is escort for Gen Ord now am willing to take any position that I think i can fill and thinking you willing to assist please Give me your advice as soon as convenient I may refer you to John P Renolds as he is the only man there that I know Yours in haste
