I have been an inmate of this place since the 22nd of Jan 63. After staying here some 8 weeks I was told that if we could obtain a list of 50 unfit for duty they would transfer us to some Hospital in our own State. I obtained a list of over 70 and presented it to Surgeon B. Clark (Post Surg) who promised to give it due attention, but this is the last of it. The Ind boys were transfered <hr /> to there own state since four weeks prior. As were the Mich boys. Who made application after we did. Why we should be neglected I know not. They have even transfered Ohio Soldiers to Hospital nearest their respective homes. Any one that ever has been an inmate of a Hospital for any time knows they any thing else but a desireable place. Manierre, an upright Judge & a true Patriot. I am of the opinion that to fill his place requires a great deal of care. In most instances of special elections we have been the loosers, will you listen to a few suggestions, made with deference & respect. 1st We have the Superior Court here of Concurent Jurisdiction, with the Circuit Court with three Judges in which <hr /> court the docket is now called once every month entirely through, which affords all the facilities for new business which are necessary for public convenience. 2d A special election would be very expensive and come at a time when our friends are most active in business & would hazard a defeat at a time when to have a coperhead on that bench would be of the utmost public annoyance. 3d The courts take a recess nearly every summer and do not pretend to do much business from first of June until October. And more especially this summer in the midst of the exciting news from the War. so that there is no pressing necessity for an <hr /> election until the regular fall election. The inconvenience to suiters in that court cannot certainly be as great as the public expence and the inconvenience of a special election now. 4th At the fall election we elect county and township officers and a judge and Clerk of the Superior Court, which will call out our friends and make a sure thing of our success, which in a special election is doubtful as the Coperheads will move heaven and earth to get a Judge in this county at this particular time. U.S. authorities have arrested two turbulent individuals of Tioga & carried them to Iowa, where they probably will be tried. The U.S. Custom Agent for this place, last evening, detected landing from the Steamer, a Box, containing one very large & heavy Revolver & six more smaller & yet <hr /> of large size. These were directed to Mr. Couchman Chairman of the Supervisors. Also a Lot of Powder for Dennis Smith, County Judge. They are both Copperheads. Neither parcel, had any indication on the exterior, of its contents. The arms came from Allen Wheelock, of Worcester Massts, The Powder from the house of Enoch Woods in Chicago who have shipped powder before to the same class of men. The copperheads have several times before declared that they [come?] armed and ready for us. They have undoubtedly recd fighting utensils from time to time. <hr /> The Officer, McCherry, who has our full confidence, wishes me to advise you of the acts done by him & if you have any instructions or wishes upon the Subject, we will gladly receive them. That our County may become the Theatre of serious disturbances, is the theory of the Copperheads & I should not be surprised, to find their threats realised.
