Marsh of the 12th Ill Cav. Capt Marsh carries a right arm by his side nearly palsied or rendered useless by a wound received during that ever to be remembered raid of Gen Stoneman on Richmond in May / 63. The Capt is anxious yet to do all he can towards “putting down this Rebellion” & would still lead his Company in battle although unable to defend himself. Were it not for Rheumatic difficulties that seem to have taken possession of his system, ocasioned undoubtedly from long exposure, he thinks that he may be more useful to the Govt if employed in some detached service. I can reccommend Capt Marsh for integrity & ability, having been a personal freind and acquaintance for many years & one of our working friends. Please assist him <hr /> to some honorable & lucrative position if you can. I will endorse the Capt for most anything for I know him to be made of the Right Kind of Metal. The genuine “[Thing?]” and much oblige Your obt servt Geo J. Bergen I most cheerfully concur in the above. The Capt was the Republican candidate for sheriff in Fulton, in 1860 and did very much in that county (which seem to be “[illegible] to believe a lie”) to diffuse [illegible] gospel light and make [republican?] [roles?] at that time. Boyle, Major Boyle's eldest son, he has been in the Army since the commencement of the war, a young man of fine talents and education has been First Lieutenant & Adjutant of the 111th Penn Vols. His Father was one of the brave five Hundred who fell at the Midnight attack at Wauhatchie <hr /> Tenn, in October last. Richard S. Boyle is desirous of securing the appointment of Paymaster of U P Vols.
