Richard Yates Springfield Illinois Governor, The Ninth Illinois Cavalry being about to go to Illinois as veterans and for re-organization, I take especial pleasure in commending them to your favorable consideration and personal exertions in their behalf, that they may at an early day, return to usefulness in the Field. This Regiment is composed of skillful officers and brave men, whose courage, gallantry and pure patriotism have been fully tested in many a hotly contested engagement. I consider the Ninth Regiment Illinois Cavalry, one of the best in the service, as it certainly is one of the best in my <hr /> command, and men of Illinois who desire to enter this branch of the service, will find it greatly to their advantage to share the fortunes and honors of this noble command. I conclude that my friends would have no hesitation in using their influence to procure me the promotion. Having relied upon you for counsel and advice at other times I take the liberty of addressing you to ask you to do what you may deem proper in the matter. My regiment is so much reduced that unless I procure a new Command, I will soon have to be mustered out of the service.
