Dear Sir

I hope you will pardon the liberty I have taken in writing to you on this occasion, but knowing the interest you have taken in the welfare of our brave soldiers, I am constrained to think your humanity is equally great in behalf of their Widows & Orphans therefore I am bold enough to write you for advice. On the 1st day of August 1861 at Winchester Ills. William West Enlisted in Lieutenant W W Masons Company (F) 33 Regiment of Ills Infantry

for 3 years - and was Discharged at Cairo Ills 27th January 1863 by reason of Surgeons certificate of disability, by order of General Tuttle - he Died at Jacksonville on the 12th day of June 1863 and his Widow claims his bounty $100 which he had never received, & like the rest of the Widows think she is entitled to his pension - said widow is left with 6 small children 1 born since his death & is in a tight place, she goes out washing &c to make a living, she has applied

to some persons to try to get her the pension &c who tell he she cannot claim it nor can she get it, that is why I write to you to ask if it is not her due & if so how should she apply for it & I will look after it for her, I fear those she has applied to are not so truthful as they should be - is her claim different from any others, he enlisted in defence of his country & contracted a disease which brought on Death, that was equal to being Shot in my opinion - & then to be told you cant claim it he was not killed in action it is a queer doctrine

I have trespassed on your valuable time please pardon me I feel feel for the widow & Orphans - If you please to drop a line either to Maria West Jacksonville or to John Nelthorp Jacksonville I shall feel thankfull I am aware that I am trespassing on your valuable time but hope you will forgive the liberty

I am Dr Sir

yours Respy

John Nelthorp

to R. Yates Esqr

Governor

Springfield Ills

I have his discharge before me

                    <text>
[probably late 1861) Early 1862]

R Yates

Governor of the State of Illinois

Excellence:

By report of Mayor Grissdon of the 6th Cavalry Gov. Legion who happened to hear the language used by the Chaplain of the same in your presence for the purpose of vindicating Col Th H Cavanaugh's character in regard to a certain female of the City of Springfield I learned that it was such as must needs impress upon your mind an opinion unfavorable to me. In order to do justice to myself I feel compelled to direct these lines to you.

Some time in the month of December, when the number of sick was unusually large Col Cavanaugh, to whom my reports went every morning asked me, whether the Nurses engaged were able to stand such amount of labor and whether two Ladies in the Wards, and one in the kitchen, as they continued to work ever since November 1st 1861, should not have some assistance? My reply was, yes they ought to have assistance, but having failed to secure the services of suitable persons when I had the honor of seeing your Excellence in the former part of said month, and obtained a pass for them

I returned to Shawneetown without relief for my Lady-Nurses, and found them willing to go cheerfully on in the performance of their hard work and task of self sacrificing.

Now when the Colonel himself acknowledged they were overtaxed, and when he offered to me the services of a Lady whom he recommended in presence of the Chaplain if I am not mistaken, and sure I am not, I accepted of his offer confident in his recommandation and wrote at his request a letter to Adjutant General Fuller in behalf of this Lady, whom he told me to be an Orphan and worthy in every way and respect of his protection.

The letter was written, and contained the statement, that I had failed to procure assistance in Peoria amongst Ladies whom I was a acquainted with and that I would ask the favor of issuing a free pass to the person thus recommanded to me by a Gentleman superior in Command, and much more the recommendation being suported by the very Chaplain. The pass was refused and yet the Lady made her appearance in Shawneetown having her expenses defraied by the Colonel.

Being not prepared to give her accomodations at the Hospital where my Lady Nurses slept behind a lumber partition in the kitchen, the Colonel brought her to the Hotel

took charge of her, and tried to get her a place in the family of Mr. Fred. Houghston's where he boarded himself with his son the Adjutant. For reasons unknown to me he could not keep her there, but the next morning after the old Post office was destroyed by fire, Houghston's house was vacated, she was seen back in the Hotel, and Mr. Edmund Tyler before morning call confidentially communicated to me, that said lady was of doubtful character and well known to some of the Gentlemen in town. Whereupon I forthwith positively expressed that she never should disgrace my Corps of Ladies assistants, and instantly I went to the Colonel reporting to him what I learned, telling him that it is utterly impossible for me to let her pass the threshold of my Hospital. He was perplexed, wanted to know, who I heared this by, what I unhesitatingly communicated to him. He was in [ira?] against Mr. Tyler, yet at once he said if things be so she must go back. This ends in so far the matter as I had to do with it. What further happened I did not notice, as during my whole sojourn with the regiment, I had no other care but the charge confided to my hands the sick keeping betweext the parties, and wishing to do justice to either for the best and wellfare of the Regiment.

A testimony in behalf of Mrs. Eliza [Arken?], Mrs. Anna Sturgis and Miss Mary Sturgis all of Peoria and recommended to me by D. D. Irons Esq. Mark [Arkin?] of the same City and the best of Ladies there, besides known to me personally issued by the Officers of Governors Legion, will show to your Exellency that my first selection was good and worthy a man and a mason, and have some weight, in correcting an opinion about me which when keept up would make me unhappy in so far as I should know to have lost the esteem of a Gentleman, whom I ever honored and whose good opinion I feel proud of. Sir never believe me to be accessary to a mean act.

I am your Excellence

most Obedient

6th Ills Cavalry Governors Legion

Dr. J. N. Niglas as to a certain "female woman"

Write him that my estimate of him was too high to be weakened by any casual remarks from any source and that I think Mr. [Gagner?] did not mean to cast any censure upon him

John N. Niglas

Surgeon

6th Ills Cavalry Governors Legion

Dr. J. N. Niglas as to a certain "female woman"

Write him that my estimate of him was too high to be weakened by any casual remarks from any source and that I think Mr. [Gagner?] did not mean to cast any censure upon him

                    <text>
Shawneetown Illinois April 15th 1861.

To His Excellency

Richard Yates

Gov. State of Illinois

Sir: We have received information that Fort Sumpter has been surrendered to the rebels. At Uniontown Kentucky on the Ohio River twelve miles from here they this morning were firing cannons in Honor of the victory of the C. S. A.

Our people are for the Union We have no party feelings We are simply for the Union. Our Republican flag is flying on the Democratic pole in front of our town. We may have trouble here. But whether or not we want to be prepared for emergencies and also to manifest our devotion to the Stars and Stripes.

At the Request of Captain Michael K. Lawler of this County I write to you, to request that you will send to us a Battery of Artillery. The Captain knows how to serve the Guns and drill the men. He had command of two Companies in Mexico

One of volunteer Infantry and one of Cavalry. He wants to organize one or more companies (volunteer) but wants first to know if he can get the guns. If you cannot furnish a full Battery can you not send us one piece or more. There was a brass gun captured at Cerro Gordo by the 3d Regiment; most of the men of that Regiment were from the South part of the State. Captain Lawlers Company were in the thickest of the fight and helped capture this Gun, at the place where Sheilds fell. This gun was presented to the State. Could you lend this gun to the Capt. as Brigadier Gen for his Brigade

There was a full set of Infantry Equipments here in the possession of Capt. McCaleb and one set of Cavalry Equipments in possession of Capt. William Hicks. McCaleb & Hicks are both dead The arms are scattered about Would it not be well to send an order to Capt. Lawler to collect and preserve them.

Capt. Lawler is Brigadier General of the Militia of Pope, Hardin, Gallatin

Saline & Hamilton Counties His Commission is dated in 1844 February or March. He is for the Union and for fight and is the true grit.

It may be there are no arms in Springfield, but if there are not, certainly our State can procure them, and if they would be furnished to any part of the State, you certainly cannot and will not refuse them to us here. Please advise me what you can do as soon as possible

If there are any books of tactics in Springfield to be distributed, Will you please send them to Lawler, or to me for distribution.

Last week I attended Circuit Court at Harrisburg Saline County A great many people of that County were in attendance on the court and they are all for the Union and the enforcement of the laws.

Also I was at Elizabethtown last week

I was told that there are two Secessionists in the County and that they must "dry up' or leave. The people of those Counties are all right and this, Gallatin county is perfectly sound. It is a general thing in Egypt The people are anxious to have the Union preserved and traitors punished

The Capt is strictly temperate -- moral, industrias and intellegint. I recommend him to you as eminently suitable for the position of Major to the 3d Regiment Illinois Cavalry. I see by a recent Order from the War Department that each Regiment of Cavalry is entitled to three Majors. I hope Capt. Campbell will receive the appointment.

Yours &c, John Olney.

Recommendation, Capt JL Campbell.
