Dear Judge

I wrote the other day to Gov. Yates tendering my services to the State of Illinois in the present military exigency –

It is to the last degree important that the volunteer or Militia called into active service by the State, should be carefully organized & drilled & placed under the command of capable officers. The question of organization is now most important & I hope the Governor will be careful that it is exected in the best possible manner to act harmoniously with troops of other States and of the [Genl Dist?] For this purpose some uniformity both of organization & of drill is absolutely essential.

It is well remembered also that we are not now to meet Mexicans but [encounter?] our own people under the lead of the best military talent in the country & with a complete & uniform organization.

Much of the efficiency of the troops called for from Illinois will depend upon the steps taken in the

beginning & a thorough knowledge of the systems of Artillery, Infantry, & Cavalry should be brought to the service of the State. Upon the system now adopted by the State her position & influence in the coming war, will largely depend & too much care & judgement & experience cannot be secured.

If I can be of service you know how gladly I will do my part but I think you had better yourself see the Governor as soon as you can & urge upon him the propriety of selecting men of military education & experience to take charge of the organization, equipment & system of discipline of the troops to be called into service. He should by all means retain in his own hands with the consent of the State Senate, the appointment of the Field officers, (that is Majors, Lt Cols & Colonels) of all the Regiments – he may call into service that he may secure for such responsible offices those best qualified for them.

A mistake now would seriously jeopard the military character of the State, or render its troops incapable of at once doing service with other

I wrote to you hastily to secure your active agency in above in which we are all so much interested.

In relation to the apprehensions of the people of Quincy although I believe them to be wholly without foundation it will be sufficient to say that Genl Hurlbut with five hundred & fifty men of the 16' Ills is at Palmyra & that I have today ordered the [Iowa?] regiment with four pieces of artillery to Hannibal – These of themselves would be sufficient to ensure the safety of Quincy but in addition I have just had an interview with a committee from N.E. Missouri headed by James S. Green begging for peace. The system I have adopted in North Missouri is beginning to bear done upon the secessionists and they are or soon will be as anxious for peace as the union men. Green assures me that he has the power to make his brother & all other [persons?] in arms in his section of the county, lay down their arms & keep the peace &

solemnly promises to do so. I told him plainly that it was their only chance for safety as I intended immediately to bear down upon them & their property as they never had dreamed of before. Two union men of character, one from Canton & one from Edina came with the Committee & assured me that the pledges there made would be kept. I think there will be little more trouble in that section of country.

I know nothing & have heard nothing of the arms you refer to. I can get no arms here in the present State of confusion & know as little of them as you do. I sent you verbally by [Caisel?] my views & opinions of matters here from which you may deduce easy conclusions as to what can be done or what as can hope for, in regard to our Ills troops. You know how anxious I have been about them & how zealous I am to put them to such I hope that they will do justice to themselves & honor to the State. I confess I see but poor prospect of accomplishing what we both so much desire but you may be sure that I will do the best I can now & always.

I will suggest to Fremont

about the aid from Ills. though I have little expectation he will adopt my suggestion. Foreigners are the rage & will be until they are squelched out.

Every thing is in a State of excitement here today. Martial law has been partially declared in the city & the police put under control of the military. Troops in large numbers are going & have gone forward to Rolla. I hope the disaster at Springfield can be repaired.

I will write you fully when things grow clearer within a day or two.

<text>Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.”

Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.

On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years.

The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.

The finding aid for the Monticello College (Godfrey, IL) Records at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/545.

The finding aid for the photographic Monticello College Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/3/resources/4702.

</text>
