Dear Sir,

This County (Pike) is in a very excited condition. We have large numbers of Missouri Bushwhackers passing day & night all can be observed, who appear in public, & they are getting bold eno to show themselves in our towns, even in Pittsfield, with at least one revolver. Recently a party of 8 or 10 passed East of Pittsfield with guns, in the night. Camps are heard of composed of men only, in many parts of our county. Recently an officer from Missouri tried to arrest a Col Hickerson East of Pittsfield & was resisted by 5 armed men who drew revolvers & he had to suffer

Hickerson to go at large, in a populous neighborhood, in which there are many rebel sympathizers.

Revelations have been made to J. L. Irvin Esq for some time past that a Raid was intended, by friends of the rebel Crowd on Roselle, who escaped from Pike Jail & was shot in Greene county Ills, a few weeks since.

Judge Fagg Circuit Judge, residing at Louisiana Missouri has written to two of our League Officers in Pike, that a Raid was to be made from Pike Missouri upon us. The Bushwhackers, here now, spent last winter here & went off when the leaves came -- some of them voted here -- they congre

Thieves have confessed in our Courts that they had been in Missouri & in extenuation pleaded the "troubles of the times & bad advice".

Our people in the West part of Pike are much alarmed, the river Mississippi is very low, In places fordable nearly all across and often only 50 yards to swim. The Bushwhackers do not cross at the Ferries. They come and go at night.

We are in danger here, especially if anything turns up to make these villians feel more encouragement for their cause. I am especially marked

The rebel Newspaper "Pike County Democrat" has assailed me ever since the war began. It attacks now the Leagues (U L. A) for arming to meet these Bushwhackers. I have not seen the paper, to be opened in the morning, but I am told it is full of bitterness at us for arming the leagues.

We are getting ready by common & some consent of action for trouble. Our County Clerk Wm Steers received circulars in [illegible], he is a rank copperhead. His speeches and those of other prominent men are very bitter, made in the country to crowds, in Pike. We have a Central Committee of Safety. We have say 400 Muskets fit for service. Some muskets got out to State Militia who are disloyal. I wish Col Oakes would give an order to seize them in case of an out break

The mass of the citizens of Pike will resist Bushwhackers if our loyal people lead them. We desire you as our Governor to know our perilous condition and the reason why we are on the alert.

This is a very wealthy county large in territory, has large creeks much timber land, wide unsettled river bottoms affording harbors for marauders & strong temptations.

Will there be any thing objectionable if we throw our loyal men into the shape of a regiment. We cannot do so under the Militia law -- it is obsolete.

Sir Although somewhat advanced in life I am yet able to do something for my country in this time of her affliction and I desire to go into her service in some capacity even the most humble. It is not wise to delay in preparing for a death struggle The infernal traitors are organizing in our own state to resist the Government Let us be prepared to meet them and we have no time to spare or as the Doctors say "sero medicina parartur" I have closed my office sold my library and although poor am determined to devote my whole time to the service of my country in any and every way in which I can render her

aid. My age prevents me from being received as a private soldier or I should have been in the service long ago I did however do something in raising two companies who have been almost three years in the service and have done credit to themselves and State If there is any situation within your knowledge or at your disposal in which I can be placed I am on hand and can leave home on 24 hours notice and although it may appear like boasting I do say I can do more service than 3/4 of the men that compose our army not excepting the officers. I owe an apology perhaps for troubling you with these lines but as an old Clay whig who loves his country and has acted with you in Illinois for more than 30 years

I trust you will pardon the liberty i have taken in asking your aid to enable me to get some position in the service where I can be of benefit to the best government on earth

I am respectfully yours &c

Most sincerely regret that no place just now. Should there be any none whom I would prefer to serve you - will be glad to recommend you should you know of a place open which you would like

Portsmouth, Va., August 16, 1864.

Dear Yates

I would very much like to be in Illinois during the month of October and up to the day of election. I believe that I could be of some service to our friends politically. If, therefore, you think it advisable it can be affected through you and Dick Oglesby, our candidate for Governor. All that is necessary is for you to make the request in the right quarter. If Genl Butler remains in command of this Department, perhaps, a letter from you to him is all that would be necessary, in fact, I am quite sure that your request would be granted with pleasure. I saw Mr. Arnold just before the close of the late session and he remarked that "I must be sure to be home during the coming canvass." I told him that it were impossible for me to leave without authority. he replied "that you could have it arranged without doubt". Of course, Stanton is all powerful in such matters, but, I think his sun is going down, at all events, it seems to be under a cloud.

Dick, you must be our next Senator, and must have old Morgan with you, and we all know that, it will require the hardest kind of work to redeem her from the thraldom of the "Copper heads", and to assist in this work would be a great pleasure to me, besides, serving friends whom I shall ever hold dear to memory.

As for our old friend "Uncle Abe", I fear that he is loosing ground, the tendency of public sentiment is evidently drifting that way, and unless the current is very quickly checked the result will be disastrous. I hope I am mistaken in the signs of the times, I am well satisfied that, Lincoln is in the hands, or rather, he listens, confers, and in a great measure, conforms to the opinions and suggestions of men, more because of their positions than for their good sense. yet, he may not be to blame, for to do otherwise, would be the exception to the almost universal rule of action with men in high positions. But, in my humble judgment, it is the hidden rock upon which so many have been politically wrecked, and to avoid a fate similar he should tack ship, and stear by other charts!

My kind regards to Mrs. Yates---also to my good friend Judge Berdan & family---not forgetting [Mart?] Cassele.

I should be glad to have an answer to this letter with your opinion as to the proposition of my returning home for the time named.

It may be that, Lincoln himself would aid in the matter? However, that is for you to decide. I must confess that my faith is a little shaky in that quarter---more especially, since he places in the hands of little popinjays and self conceited fancy boys,---questions of political diplomacy that should require the ablest engineering---by men full grown at least.
