If such is the case & I could get the Commission I am quite confident I could raise a Regiment in a very short time if the place is not disposed of I should like it. Can come well recommended. I was once a citizen of Decatur. Am known by all the old citizens among which are Maj Gen RJ Oglesby BH Cassell & many others. should like an early reply Truly yours

I see it states that there is needed a regiment of volunteers for one year to guard the Military River at Alton.

The Copperheads in this vicinity have declared that none of their party shall either be arrested or drafted. On the 12th inst. a company of them organised, on the 11th they held a meeting in Birmingham Schuyler Co. to organize an other as I suppose. I think this ought to be stopped or a least that the Union men ought to be prepared to defend themselves, their homes and families against any outbrake of these infernal rebles. Now sir I beg leave to raise a company of men to be ready for them. I want to know if you can furnish us with arms and if it will be propper for us to prepare by drilling orgaising &c.

Dear sir

The Copperheads in this vicinity have declared that none of their party shall either be arrested or drafted. On the 12th inst. a company of them organised, on the 11th they held a meeting in Birmingham Schuyler Co. to organize an other as I suppose. I think this ought to be stopped or a least that the Union men ought to be prepared to defend themselves, their homes and families against any outbrake of these infernal rebles. Now sir I beg leave to raise a company of men to be ready for them. I want to know if you can furnish us with arms and if it will be propper for us to prepare by drilling orgaising &c.

Governor---Permit me, a former resident of Chicago, to address you on a subject which may prove of benefit to your State. From the newspapers I learned a few days ago, that you have appointed a Committee to consider the Disposition that should be made of some 48,000 Acres of land your State recently got from Congress, and as there is a possibility of the State locating and taking possession of those lands instead of selling the mere right to locate and take possession of them, I beg leave to draw your attention to the fact that Gustav Struve, the Co-patriot and intimate of Friedrich Hecker has recently established at Coburg in Saxony an office for the sale of lands in the United States. Mr. Struve like friend Hecker esteemed and revered in all Germany, has spent here some 12 years, two of which as a volunteer in the 8th NY. V., and has returned to Europe about a year ago. On account of his well known and well tried honesty, he is just the man to carry on such operations in Europe beneficially to all the parties concerned. Should these 48,000 Acres be first located and then placed at the disposal of Mr. Struve, I have no doubt that

that your State would reap the full benefit therefrom, and that a new and thriving German settlement would soon cover those lands. Mr. Struve has associated with him a man of a similar lofty character Mr. Feodor Streit of Coburg, and as to the character of Struve any prominent German in Ill. can give you the necessary information. Their firm is I believe: Struve & Streit in Coburg, Saxony, and they intend getting low-priced US lands placed at their disposal and sell them for a small commission; the buyer to pay them a small portion of the purchase money, and paying the balance on taking possession of the land and receiving his deed.

As for myself I beg leave to refer you to Judge E. S. Williams and Hon John L. Wilson of Chicago

Where is Col. Hecker and what has become of him? About a year ago I saw him wounded at the house of his brother-in-law Dr. Tiedeman in Philadelphia, and since that time, on account of my absence in Europe I lost sight of him.

Telegraph I think "yes" as to infantry. I think it would be safe to act upon the presumption that would be accepted if in time.
Doubtful as to Cavalry & Artillery. Have written to Washington to know.

I would Respectfully inquire if it be probable that the Genl Govt will accept newly organized Batteries and companies to be mustered into Old Regiments of artillery, Infantry or cavalry, where such Old Regiments have been Consolidated so that they now have less than their original number of "Companies" or "Batteries"

I am Sir

Very Respectfuly

C. M. Brazee

"Late" Capt Co. "C." 74 Ill. Vol.

Brazee C. M

Rockford Aug. 15/64

Can newly organized Batteries be mustered into old Regts.

Telegraph I think "yes" as to infantry. I think it would be safe to act upon the presumption that would be accepted if in time.
Doubtful as to Cavalry & Artillery. Have written to Washington to know.

I hope so far as it can be accomplished by you, the old Regiments and their worthy officers will be saved by being filled up by such volunteers & drafted men as can be got and that officers who have done effective service and proved practically their competency will not if we can prevent it be inflicted to impertinant examinations on catch-questions by men who never smelt powder. I could not to day pass an examination for admission to the bar on the questions that many unpracticed lawyers put to students. Many of our best volunteer officers who have now served nearly three years and a half and are practically the best officers we have and know
