&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In August last I had the honor of receiving from you a Commission as Captain of Company "A" in the 20th Regt of Ill Vol -- which, owing to every species of injustice, and injury, which could be imposed by a a Superior Officer, I was compeled to Resign, in order to separate, myself, from the annoyances, and partialities of my Colonel.  About the first of Nov, I quit the service, not however, intending to remain, out, but intending, to return, as soon as possible, as I felt confident, that the manner in which I had, discharged my 
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;duties, would entitle me to a position, which would enable me to Return to the service, for which purpose I called on Gen Fuller,   Shortly after my return, when I learned for the &lt;u&gt;first&lt;/u&gt; time, that having &lt;u&gt;Resigned&lt;/u&gt; I could not be recommissioned when he promised me further advice, on that point.  I have waited, until now, without any further attention, to what I know, are my Just claims; and in as much as &lt;u&gt;Resigned&lt;/u&gt; &lt;u&gt;Officers&lt;/u&gt;, &lt;u&gt;have&lt;/u&gt; &lt;u&gt;been&lt;/u&gt; &lt;u&gt;Recommissioned&lt;/u&gt;, -- I wish to call your attention, to the &lt;u&gt;propriety&lt;/u&gt;, of giving me such a position, as six months, in the service, without the absence of a single day, entitles me to have, and as the men of the Regt. to which I belonged, will attest, that I deserve

I have been detached from the Regiment. Since it came into the State and am not able to State the feelings or the disposition of the men to Re-enlist.  Six Companies of my Command have been at St. Louis. For some time but are now down south

&lt;p&gt;at some point:  that I am not informed of: Only 3 companies are here.  One at Gasconade River.  I have forwarded more Circulars to St Louis hoping men may find the Regiment. In time to do some thing yet.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;My impression is that in this as most cases like it the men will want to be at home – a few days: long enough to get tired of it before they will Reenlist to any Extent; I think a short time at home would induce numbers of them to Re-enter the Service – The Guerrilla Warfare here is very formidable:

I have the honor through request of writting a letter for Marshall Gates in regard to the appointment to the military school at West Point Marsh wants to go and will except the appointment Marsh is having very good health now he has been sick all last winter I wrote you a letter for him once before in which I requested you to get him out of the service if you could or get him a position where he can take care of himself How old does a man have to be to get nito the military school  I would like very much myself if I could get nito the military school or some position where I could keep out of the sun I was sun struck at Clarendon last summer ----and I cannot stand hot weather It is reported here that [Kuby?] Smith is marching on this place with 50,000 fifty thousand strong if he comes he will take this place just as easy as snap your finger this department has been [created?] very mean I [thing?think?], in regard to pay but finally the paymaster has arrived at Little Rock with funds to pay this dept there is deserters comming in most evry day or two I must bring this epistle to a close there is no news  of any importance to communicate today I remain your most obt servt John W. I have the honor through request of writting a letter for Marshall Gates in regard to the appointment to the military school at West Point Marsh wants to go and will except the appointment Marsh is having very good health now he has been sick all last winter I wrote you a letter for him once before in which I requested you to get him out of the service if you could or get him a position where he can take care of himself How old does a man have to be to get nito the military school  I would like very much myself if I could get nito the military school or some position where I could keep out of the sun I was sun struck at Clarendon last summer ----and I cannot stand hot weather It is reported here that [Kuby?] Smith is marching on this place with 50,000 fifty thousand strong if he comes he will take this place just as easy as snap your finger this department has been [created?] very mean I [thing?think?], in regard to pay but finally the paymaster has arrived at Little Rock with funds to pay this dept there is deserters comming in most evry day or two I must bring this epistle to a close there is no news  of any importance to communicate today I remain your most obt servt John W.                   <text>Charles Samuel Deneen (Republican) served as a one-term member of the Illinois House of Representatives beginning in 1892. He was born in Edwardsville, Illinois, and grew up in Lebanon, Illinois, where his parents were among the founders of McKendree College. Deneen graduated from McKendree College and then attended Union College of Law (now known as Northwestern University Law School). He served as an attorney for the Chicago Sanitary District from 1895-1896 and State&amp;rsquo;s Attorney for Cook County from 1896-1904. In 1904, Deneen was elected to the first of two terms as Illinois Governor where he was a strong supporter of education issues and the Illinois Waterway. Deneen served one term as the U. S. Senator from Illinois (1925-1931). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Photographs in this collection include images of Charles Deneen attending events, including the Illinois State Fair, the dedication of the Illinois Monument at Andersonville Prison, and the Madison County Centennial. Family photos of his wife, Bina Day Maloney, and four children (Charles A. Deneen, Dorothy Deneen Blow, Frances Deneen Birdsall, and Bina Day Deneen House) and images of McKendree College professors also appear in this collection.</text>
