Accept my hearty thanks for your very kind and highly commendatory letter. Whether I shall even receive any recognition from the National Administration is uncertain. Were positions at your disposal I would feel more confident.

I have just made arrangements to go south to rent a plantation partly on account of my health which is not good and partly because I am induced to believe there is money in the operation and it has occurred to me that a recommendation as to Loyalty Honesty and other qualifications might be of service to me from the Gov or other state officials, and not having time to visit Springfield I take the liberty to trouble you to obtain for me such [illegible] as you may think I need or are worthy of. I would further say that I am personally acquainted

with Mr Field the President of the Commission for renting abandoned plantations, and last year he was very anxious to have me join him, down there and take a plantation but my circumstances were such then that I could not do so, and I see that new men are now appointed by the Treasury Department which may invoke the removal of the present Commission and it is to provide for this emergency that I ask for recommendations from our State officials

If you feel disposed to render me any assistance in this direction it will be duly appreciated by Yours Fraternally

Permit me to trouble you again.
