I am in receipt of your reply to my letter of the 11th [illegible] & for your full & detailed answer to my enquiry, I beg to return you my sincere thanks. It would have been fortunate for me indeed could I have had this testimony in my possession years ago. Mr S's advice to you was, under all the circumstances of the case, most extraordinary. It was neither more nor less, than urging a Suppression

of the truth, at the very time, when, alike the interests of public justice, the honor of the military administration & the [illegible] reputation of one of its officers - who was also his personal friend - required that truth to be made public. The asking you to await the final judgment of the people, & at the same time withholding from them the proof on which that judgment - to be just must be formed - was a sad, sad mockery. I wish i could have been spared this revelation; but because it is bitter, I do not thank you the less for having made it.

Very respectfully

Your obt. servt,

Such an opinion from one of your eminently judicial mind, and

acquaintance with all the points of this controversy, I accept & shall treasure up as a most valued muniment of my reputation, so cruelly assailed in the long ago, but so effectively defended by your timely intervention. I say timely, for it was just at the moment, that Andrew Johnson, was doubtless exulting in the belief, that he - his friend Genl Speed cooperating - had given a stab to my character from which it could never recover. For this intervention, my dear Judge, I owe you "a debt immense of endless gratitude".

I have a joyful belief, that so long as God is on his throne, angelic hands will be found to roll away the stone from the portals of the sepulchre in which men & devils have entombed the truth. That Genl Speed, in a room adjoining to that in which I held my interview with Prest Johnson, & through a communicating door that chanced to be ajar, heard every word spoken by the President & myself, while he was considering the record of the trial of the assassins, & the petition for clemency in the case of Mrs Surratt, I entertain no doubt - indeed I have satisfactory

reasons for an absolutely complete conviction to that effect. His subsequent conduct towards me, so wholly indefensible, can, I think be explained only on the theory, that he had under influences I shrink from discussing, in effect, pledged himself to Andrew Johnson, to suppress the truth in his (Johnson's) interest, heedless of possible consequences to himself & to me. That suppression was certainly inflexibly maintained in life & in death.

This whole affair has been for me, a painful revelation of the possibilities of the utmost dishonor in the high places of the world, & it should be a solemn warning for all as it has been

for myself. Woe to the man who, in trustful ignorance of the treacheries of our race, leaves, for one single moment, his reputation in the power of another - be he peasant or President.

Why is it that you no longer come to Washington? You certainly have not turned your back on the Capitol, the theatre of your past brilliant exploits, & so the seat of your fame. your friends & admirers here are legion, & would rejoice in the privilege of clasping your hand once more. Have you yet entered upon the work of collecting & preparing for publication in permanent form, the speeches, reports, letters &c which would

illustrate your past professional & political career? It is only through such a publication that coming generations can possess themselves of that record of your genius, your learning & your patriotism, now so familiar to your contemporaries. This work is too important to yourself, your family & the country to be left to others. You alone can do it justice. Time passes & there should be no delay. I have personal reasons for my solicitude. Remember, I heard your grand argument on the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, & in my judgment, that speech deserves immortality, quite as much as Cicero's

oration against Verres or that of Sheridan against Warren Hastings. Pardon the earnestness with which I urge this. Your kind wishes, my dear Judge, are most heartily reciprocated. I pray that the vesture of life may continue to rest lightly on you, in despite of the years which are pressing upon us all, & that your evening may be as cloudless as your morn was triumphant.

Ever faithfully,

your friend

Ever faithfully,

your friend

J. Holt

Hon Jno. A. Bingham.

During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. McCormick and his wife, Nettie Fowler McCormick, became the seminary's major financial patrons. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library.

After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants. The seminary relocated to Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood in 1975.

The photographs in this collection include portraits of the McCormick Theological Seminary Class of 1896, school professors, and campus buildings.
</text>

Chicago, July 30, 1862.

Dear Governor:

I have not at present much business in my office, and having all my life been accustomed to active employment, indeed to political excitement of some kind or other, I very much feel the need of it at this time. I also have had the misfortune to endorse two notes to the amount of $1,000 for a relative, (on one of which a judgement has been obtained against me) and which I fear I will have to pay. To do so now will compel me to sacrifice part of my property, probably my home, unless I can obtain some aid.

I thought that under the new call for troops, you might be able to give me duties to perform on your staff such as I had been engaged in at Cairo and Pittsburgh, as per order of Gen. Fuller. If you could do so, I would feel exceedingly grateful, and endeavor to repay the favor with interest. I flatter myself that you

have hitherto found me able and willing to perform that which I promised; and that I have not been controlled, as it had been represented to you, by any party inimical to your personal or political interests. Should I obtain a position of the kind I desire, I would be able to use the columns of a leading journal in the State, to a greater or lesser extent, to forward your views.

Since I returned from Pittsburgh Landing I have suffered from [miasruatic?] rheumatism, which has had a depressing effect upon me, morally as well as physically, and I very much feel the need of a change of scene.

I read your Proclamation on the subject of the call for additional troops, with much interest. It spoke to the heart of the people. Indeed I had not read a public document in many years which so affected me.

Wentworth has subsided since the defeat of the Constitution He carried his colleagues, Fuller and [illegible], down with him.

All three are lost out of sight. Still some are such fools as to speak of W. for Congress in this county, this fall. The only move that can possibly save him, now, is to raise a regiment for the war! He knows too well, however, that a Colonel has to stand entirely too near "where the shooting is going on" for comfort, and he will never risk it.

As for yourself, I do not see how you could be in a better position for your future prospects, as respects all you could possibly desire.

Please let me know if there is any chance for an opening by which I can serve my country as above, and oblige

Your friend and Obedient servant,

Jos. K. C. Forrest

Dana arrived here last night. I saw him today and found him all right in the main question. He told Uncle that my letters were the only things in the paper that had any common sense and an appreciation of the
state of the country. He told Uncle that he wanted me here and I have agreed to stay. I will probably be his factotum. He is in favor of amending the constitution, giving all who can read and write, white or black a right to vote. If I remain, which is all but certain, I can do you good here. Dana agrees with all my news and says that my letters greatly interested him. He says if I will write editorials, like my letters it is all he wants.

I thought it would do me good if you were to write him a letter, setting me up, as you know him, and letting him know much good I did the [cause?] and the party during the last five years. I find he had read all my letters and that he and I agree perfectly. There is no [illegible] doubt but

My dear Governor:

There is no [illegible] doubt but

that the paper will be all right for you, and I can do all that I hoped to do for you in it.

With kind regards to Mrs. Yates and family,

Your attached friend,

F.

Tell [Babcock?] to write to Dana also.
