J.) Jacoby was born in 1855, one of eleven children of Henry and Katherine Peiter Jacoby of Brighton, Illinois. C. J. Jacoby attended public schools in Brighton and Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton, Missouri.  He became a country school teacher, but after a year gave up that career to become a traveling salesman.   In 1883 he established the first Jacoby store in Bunker Hill, combining furniture sales with undertaking.  His store soon offered carpets, wallpaper, pianos, organs, and sewing machines in addition to furniture.  In 1891 C. J., along with four brothers, Philip W., Henry C., Louis C. and William C., initiated a stock company; and in 1892 they established a second store in Jerseyville, Illinois.  Operating under the name Jacoby Brothers, the furniture and undertaking business provided a source of employment for the Jacoby siblings, with Louis Jacoby becoming the manager of the Jerseyville store. In 1897, C. J. Jacoby opened a store in Alton.  C. J. left the management of the Jacoby Brothers’ stores in Bunker Hill and Jerseyville to his brothers, and began to operate the Alton store under the name of C. J. Jacoby and Company.  This store became the largest of the Jacoby stores.  In 1904 the store located itself at 627-629 East Second Street.  In 1925 Jacoby purchased the Alton Laundry Company building and the Dr. Wuellner building, which were next to each other on Broadway in Alton.  In November of 1930, a modern three story store was opened at the Broadway location.  In addition to the three furniture stores established, a fourth was opened in 1920 in Wood River.  Jacoby also purchased the Alton Hardware Company in 1917, which continued to operate as a hardware concern. He married Anna D. Lippoldt (1858-1929) in 1882, also the child of German immigrants.  Together they had eight children: Oscar K. (1885-1905), Clara H., Effie F., Edwin L., Philip W., Caspar J., Jr., Verneda and Anna.  All the Jacoby children attended Central Wesleyan College.  Edwin, Philip and Caspar, Jr. inherited the operation of the Alton Store from their father as he entered retirement.  As of 1985, the grandchildren of C. J. Jacoby continued to operate the Alton store at 627 West Broadway. During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. McCormick and his wife, Nettie Fowler McCormick, became the seminary's major financial patrons. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library. Office of Lieutenant Governor Editor Hoffmann, Julius Carl, 1848-1935 Bankers Description An account of the resource Francis Arnold Hoffmann was born in Hereford, Westphalia, Prussia, and came to the United States to escape conscription. Hoffmann settled in Chicago in 1839 where he studied for the ministry and was put in charge of the Lutherans in northeastern Illinois serving as pastor in Dunklee's Grove until 1847. In 1847 Hoffmann was named pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schaumberg. Four years later, he quit the ministry and moved into Chicago where he studied law and engaged in real estate and the insurance business. He was named to the Chicago City Council in 1852, serving through 1860. Hoffmann established a bank in 1854 which failed during the Civil War. Hoffmann was appointed consul for several German states and he was the first editor of the German newspaper, Illinois Staats Zeitung. He was one of the organizers of the Republican Party in Illinois and in 1860 was elected Lieutenant Governor of the state. Hoffmann established the International Bank at Chicago in 1866 and was active in restoring banks and businesses after the Chicago fire in 1871. Office of Lieutenant Governor Editor Hoffmann, Julius Carl, 1848-1935 Bankers Description An account of the resource Francis Arnold Hoffmann was born in Hereford, Westphalia, Prussia, and came to the United States to escape conscription. Hoffmann settled in Chicago in 1839 where he studied for the ministry and was put in charge of the Lutherans in northeastern Illinois serving as pastor in Dunklee's Grove until 1847. In 1847 Hoffmann was named pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schaumberg. Four years later, he quit the ministry and moved into Chicago where he studied law and engaged in real estate and the insurance business. He was named to the Chicago City Council in 1852, serving through 1860. Hoffmann established a bank in 1854 which failed during the Civil War. Hoffmann was appointed consul for several German states and he was the first editor of the German newspaper, Illinois Staats Zeitung. He was one of the organizers of the Republican Party in Illinois and in 1860 was elected Lieutenant Governor of the state. Hoffmann established the International Bank at Chicago in 1866 and was active in restoring banks and businesses after the Chicago fire in 1871.
