<text>
Doris Mae Burmeister Sanford was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, on July 23, 1924, the daughter of Russell Allen Burmeister and Violet Evelyn Vieira Burmeister. She grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Both she and her husband were professionally involved with radio and television.

On retirement, Mrs. Sanford began to pursue research into her family tree. Her mother, Violet Vieira Burmeister, was the granddaughter of Emmanuel and Justina De Freitas, Portuguese immigrants who moved to Jacksonville in order to escape religious persecution. Converted Presbyterians on the island of Madeira suffered a period of persecution at the hands of the Catholic majority during the late 1830s and 1840s. To escape the situation, a group of converts, including Emmanuel and Justina De Freitas and their children, left Madeira and went to the island of Trinidad. Finding life less than desirable there, the converts moved to Jacksonville and Springfield, Illinois.

Emmanuel and Justina De Freitas had eleven children, eight of whom were alive in 1910. Frank, the oldest child, married Anna and they had six children - Nelson, Nettie, Idelle, Franklin, Gilbert, and Annabel. Daughter Pauline married Harold McLaughlin. Daughter Elizabeth married William Vieira and their daughter, Violet, was Doris Sanford's mother. Emmanuel and Justina's fourth child, Nettie, married Arthur Smith and had a son, Carl. Daughter Evaline Harrison and son David were next in the birth order. George followed, marrying Irene and having three children- Charles, Russell, and Marie. The youngest son, Thomas married Sarah Nunes and they had a son, Loren Thomas.

Mrs. Sanford put a great deal of effort into her research, and became interested in the entire group of immigrants from Madeira, not only her ancestors. She had intended to write a book based on her research, but her plans were cut short by her death in 1988.

The finding aid for the Doris M. Sanford Collection, 1846-1988 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at <a title="Doris M. <text>

While the recent victories of the federal army were announcing to the world the prompt termination of that gigantic struggle by which the principles of true liberty would be established in America, the terrible news of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln cast a shade of consternation and mourning over the spirits of all lovers of liberty and civil progress.
In uniting with the many voices that are heard in every part of the world proclaiming their horror for a crime that should not be recorded in history, for respect to humanity, and their sympathy for the great and free nation of which Mr. Lincoln was the worthy chief, our society is assured that in him society has lost the bravest champion of its rights, and will welcome his idea, to which, like so many other great men, he was the illustrious and honored victim.

The assassination of Abraham Lincoln has deeply moved all the hearts of those who recognize in him the indefatigable support of the greatest humanitary principles, the assassin striking him at the moment when a series of glorious victories seemed to have put a stop to the sanguinary war which for five years agitated the finest and most intelligent part of America.

This association, honorable sir, has manifested itself that you might be the interpreter to the American assembly of its sentiments of grief for the unexpected death of a man whom General Garibaldi called the “Ship of Liberty.” The name of Lincoln must be placed at the head of those brave men who have devoted themselves to the triumph of a great idea, defying courageously all danger, proud in the sacredness of their task.

The idea of Lincoln will not die with him; that was not struck by the dagger or by poison. That it will triumph in America is the wish of this association, for henceforth will he the struggle of civilization against barbarism. All know on which side will be the victory. America cannot regret having given birth to a man capable of committing such a crime. Assassins, like traitors, have no country.

Naples, April 28, 1865.

His Excellency Gov. Yates:

Sir - My object in addressing you is to obtain an interview preparatory to an appointment in the Illinois volunteers. There are reasons why I have not already entered the service in some company from this neighborhood, which could be better explained in person than by letter. Mason county has sent a goodly number of men into the field and it would certainly be no more than justice to give her a representation among the field or staff officers. If your appointments were confined exclusively to regularly educated military men, I could not hope to obtain favor, as my military experience is limited to a few years drill in the N. Y. militia; but if civilians who can furnish the most unexceptionable references for private character, together

with a firm and steady purpose to defend the honor and integrity of their country in every event, can stand any chance, I think I may at least obtain an interview. What I lack in the theory of military knowledge, I think can be readily acquired by dilligent study, especially when the school furnishes such abundant opportunities for practical application. Should you wish further information in regard to me I would say that I have been a resident of this state about ten years, am a native of Sag Harbor, N.Y., and son of the late Col. H. W. Hunt, of some military reputation. I would refer you to Rev. John Andrews of the Presbyterian church of Mason City, Rev. G. W. Patterson, 2d Pres church, Chicago, Mr. Geo. Straut, Peoria, or if time would permit you to make inquiry to Col Rose, 16th N.Y., or any of the prominent citizens where I have formerly resided. Hoping that this may elicit a reply, I remain

Your ob't serv't

P.S. - I will meet you at Springfield or elsewhere at any time, as you may direct, but hope the time will not be long postponed.

He is a quiet retiring modest man, but has done much in his way to aid us in raising recruits heretofore, and will continue to do so to the end, whether he does it as a private citizen, or under a commission from your Honor.

Mr Bishop did all he could too to aid in defeating that Infamous Swindle the the New, &-Bogus Constitution, not only by making speeches but by [illegible] and labouring at the Polls - I feel sure that the community here would be much better-pleased at his receiving a good position than a certain other Gentleman of Constitutional notoriety, who has made application for place - But I am taxing your patience & must conclude -

I remain very respectfully yours

Bloomington Augt 14" 1862

Honl Richard Yates

Dear Sir-

Dr Dunn after advising with his Friends this morning has, declined being a candidate for Surgeon. He wishes me to say to you, that he feels under many obligations to you for your kindness & courtesy but does not wish to put you to any further trouble in the premises, as he is out of the way -

I have also had a talk with some of our Friends, about the possibility of your not not being with us on Saturday at out meeting and they all feel that it will be a great disappointment if you should not be here. We all know that you have vast interests, intruded to you, and great pressure upon your energy & time, and that physical exhaustion, and nervous debility are the

necessary consequences of such constant application and attention to the public weal.

But what we ask of you can be made easy rather a matter of recreation than of exhaustion.

Whilst we had wished to make yours the leading speech, we will be entirely satisfied for you to occupy just as much, or as little time as you may feel like, and would further suggest, that the speech delivered by you the other day at Chicago, (in our humble judgement) could not be improved for that occasion -

If you do not feel like delivering all of that speech, (which I suppose you could easily reproduce) give us a part of it but we beg of you not to disappoint us by not coming - We are aware of the fact that there are a certain few here in this community who are envious of and dislike you and honest old Abe & Lovejoy, because (as we think) you have advanced away

If you do not feel like delivering all of that speech, (which I suppose you could easily reproduce) give us a part of it but we beg of you not to disappoint us by not coming - We are aware of the fact that there are a certain few here in this community who are envious of and dislike you and honest old Abe & Lovejoy, because (as we think) you have advanced away

beyond them on the great questions of the day, and are ready to take hold in earnest of all the means God & nature have placed in our hands to crush out this damnable Rebelion-

Some people you know are selfish enough to be capable of envy & jealousy even in times like these and that class of persons we are satisfied are disposed to throw objects in the way of making prominent, such men as yourself & Honl Owen Lovejoy -
