Yours of the 12" with fifteen Dollars enclosed was duly received.

I have made inquiry into Thos Doyles case and do not think he is one of that needy & worthy class to whome the small fund in your hands should go. I therefore return it to you. This Mr Doyle was an Irish Teamster got into the fight by accident (as I suppose) and lost his Home. since his return home the Town has pretty thoroughly begged for his profit and a considerable sum of money raised for him - he has bought a lot & built quite a good house, and will (if he has not already) draw a Pension. The Irish are an intolerable set of Beggars, and the more we give them the more they expect of us - I could name others to whome it would be much better to pay the money, but the wants of our poor soldiers families here, are now pretty well supplied.

Very respectfully yours,

Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He unsuccessfully campaigned for re-election in ever election between 1940-1948 with the exception of 1946 when he was in Mexico as a special adviser to the United States Ambassador.

Kent E. Horner was committed to cleaning up corruption in the Chicago-run Democratic Party machine. An expert on Abraham Lincoln, Horner was an avid collector of Lincoln artifacts and papers.

You will perhaps think me presumptive in thrusting myself on your precious time, but you will please give me a hearing. You are aware perhaps that Jefferson County is in the main, strong Secesh, and our small village, Rome is ruled by traitors and sent 7 or 8 men to the Rebel Army some 8 or 9 months ago, and one of those, worse than Southern traitors, was wounded & taken prisoner by our men at Pittsburgh & is now in St Louis, his friends from here have visited him & are about getting him home on parole, and we are not going to have it so, we say he shall not live here any more, and have told them we will hang him most assuredly if he comes, but they are strong & we are weak, our men are nearly

all in the army, and they have organized all the Knights of the Golden Circle into Companies & are well armed & prepared to fight for R.W. Carpenter when he is brought home. Day before yesterday they sent a man around to tell us that we should not even talk any more against him or make any threats against him or the traitorous cause, or our blood would be shed & our houses burned, that they were prepared at a moments warning to kill every Lincoln Abolitionist, and have been instructed in every form by them, had to listen to their treason& no way to help ourselves. They all claim to be union men every one of them, but all belong to the H.G.C. and hurrah for Jeff Davis, & do everything against the Union Cause & Union Soldiers, the school teachers even taught the little children that Jeff Davis was the present president & encouraged them to write compositions against our flag the immortal Stars & Strips. We have applied to the Military Authorities time and again but they don't heed such things

I wish you would help us if possible, send a man, shrewd & trusty to Rome & let him pretend to be Secesh

& he can so get inside their organizations & d out things You would not believe were I to tell you, & then do have them arrested & compelled to quit talking treason. Just to think our boys are in the army, deprived of all comforts & giving their lives even to protect those same traitors not in the south but here at home in our own free beloved State the home of the brave Illinois troops, I will give you the names of some of the meanest traitors at Rome, Doctor Lakin John Cross, Jo Slanitstein (Frenchman) William Carpenter, Henry Caldwell, Saml Caldwell Lige Harmon, William McConnell & Many others too in significant to mention, Dr. Lakins son is all right, seen off & joined our army & his father denies him shelter under his roof. I do not want any one to know I wrote this or we would be burned out before morning but I will refer you

I have seen & heard so much of your kindness to our brave soldiers & your strong love for our good cause that I thought surely you would not suffer traitors to rule in any portion of the state over which you are Governor, and I made face enough to tell you thinking if I could do no good thereby it surely would do no harm as my letter does not require a reply

Governor Yates Dr Sir

You will pardon my presumption in writing to you when you hear my grievance You are probably aware of the fact that C. W. Webster of Salem has been made Superintendent of the Sanitary Commission of North West, but you didnt know he is a copperhead, did you! He is, nevertheless, one of the leading copperheads of Southern Illinois, doubtless a K. G. C.(?) a cowardly one too as he is two faced, but no one in Marion County ever doubted his being a traitor or suspected him of being a loyal man. Why he was a candidate for nomination for Sheriff in the Copperhead Convention 3 weeks ago here. His own daughter has been an alien from his house because she is a true loyal woman.

If a bomb shell had exploded in our midst we could not have been more surprised then when he received his papers on last evening, & every loyal man woman & child was indignant, mortified, disgusted and went from house to house in the dark hours of night telling the humiliating story, but it was done with clenched hands & trembling voices and always wound up with the question "what will we do"? Why have him put out, or we will quit doing anything for the Sanitary Commission. We will close up our Aid Societies For how can we trust our goods in charge of a man whose influence goes to fill our hospitals with our wounded soldiers and have him turn round his dough face and distribute comforts to them sent by loving hands & loyal hearts just because he can fill his purse thereby. You will think, perhaps, I have a personal spite at Mr. Webster. I have nought against him only he is a copperhead. We have lived

close neighbors for 3 years & have never been acquainted, only for the same reason. Nor have I a friend who is seeking the office. I dont care a fig who has the office so that he is a loyal man. And it is true, too, Mr. Webster has a son in our army, a good brave soldier. So I could name scores of copperheads who have sons in our army. We blame I. T. Reynolds of Springfield, Sec of Agricultural Soc. for getting the position for him. in days gone by, when Copperheads were not bipeds(?), Mr. Webster & Mr. Reynolds were neighbors and close friends, but they have been separated in different parts of the state during the last four years, and he does not realize that Mr. Webster is a traitor, for no doubt he calls himself union when he is with Mr. Reynolds & talks all right, any copperhead can, but surely he must know at least he is a McClellan man, & we know Mr. Reynolds would have a great influence, for he is a worthy, true & good man but mistaken in this.

Now we all say Webster has to be put out and we want you to help us. You are a friend to the people and to our soldiers and death on copperheads, so are we. Now we want him put out. I was appointed to make the appeal to you. I dont care if Webster, or any one else, reads my letter, and more I can head a paper with the words "This is to certify that C. W. Webster, Supt, San. Com. of Illinois is a copperhead, and I can get five hundred loyal persons of our village to sign it. Yes one thousand names. Then I can head another paper with "This is to certify that, C. W. Webster is a true Democrat & a Union Man, and I can get all the copperheads in Marion County to sign it. I think the marshal of the State, D. L. Phillips knows Webster to be a copperhead.

The rebels took 700 dollars worth of cotton from us and burned it & both our clothes.
Excuse one for intruding on you, but do you remember Kate Jones, Dr Jones daughter, and one to whom you showed many little kindnesses in old times? I was married 7 years ago & went right off to Huntsville Ala. I have been in the South ever since, Recently we have been in Arkansas. We have just escaped from the State. The rebels took 700 dollars worth of cotton from us and burned it & both our clothes. Most of our money was in Confederate money & we sold it in Memphis for 15 cents on the dollar.- What we have suffered no one can tell

simply because we seem lovers of the Union. We saw where (Prices?) whole army was and words cannot tell what we went though with I wish I could see you & tell you - & of many things I know of going on in (illegible)- I am going to ask a great favor of you- & that is the loan of 150 dollars for 3 months - My Fathers family are no (illegible) I dislike to ask him to lend me the amount. You were always friendly to our family that I believe you will accommodate me - & I will bless you with every breath I draw. If you can accommodate me Send the money (not a draft) in a letter to my

If you can't lend me the money Do not reply - but - please do - and we will return it in 3 months No one of My Fathers family or any one knows I write but my Husband. You know my Father & know me as a reliable family & we will return your kindness very soon. Please copy immediately & send the money in a letter not a draft - and do not write as if I had written you I want no one to know I wrote

For the sake of your old kindness & friends help us my Father I take this liberty. For know not what we suffered getting out of rebellion - I wish I could see you - Do not reply if you cant send the money to me but I know you will & bless you forever -

Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.”

Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.

On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years.

The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.

The finding aid for the Monticello College (Godfrey, IL) Records at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/545.

The finding aid for the photographic Monticello College Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/3/resources/4702.

</text>

April 8. 1887.

Dear Colonel

Not recognizing the superscription on Your letter received today I did not open it until I reached home this evening. [illegible] following your suggestion I have written the note to Judge Stallo, which will go out by Saturdays Steamer.

Yes, the papers, certificates of the Harny portrait & my [one?] original Ribera, the documents & seals showing who had at different times owned

owned the picture, & how it came into the hands of Mr Robert McPherson – virtuoso – who sold it to me, were all left with all my personal valuable papers at [Canon Club?] from whence I escaped as you know with nothing

I have recently tried through one of my [counsel?] in R.I. to devise a way to obtain my papers, but it has [seemed?] impossible without a [new?] sensation. For spite & petty vengeance the Spragues would only give them up to force

For the picture in question,

question it seems strange with so many able art critics as there are in News York there should not be [taste?] enough among to see the merit of this master-piece without the further proof than that as the time I bought it. Mr Gladstone was trying to secure the Harney portrait for the British Museum, but I outbid him. Mr. R.McPherson was one of the experts in Rome up to the time of his death – about 1876. [He?] was charged with buying for the National Collections of Works of Art for Great Britain.

Our artists

artists in Rome were unanimous as to the picture being original & one of great interest & merit & not one voice urged my securing it as a rare acquisition for the United States.

[Reming? & illegible] both pronounced it beyond doubt a Ribera last winter when they saw it at the [Lakes?] Club & [Reming?] who is a prominent member of the Jury of the French Salon without my telling him anything of the history of the picture or its painter exclaimed “The master-hand is there!” & when I told him

it was the work of the Great Ribera, his comment was, it was then painted when the artist was still young & gave great attention to detail & had grown not so confident of his own power! A shrewd & artistic criticism. The fact of this work of Ribera not being found – as you say – not being named in the catalogue in the [Astor?] Library maybe accounted for by its owner having [few?] in any public gallery in [illegible] but always private property. Of course I will do what

what I can to obtain duplicate copies & certificate of its authenticity, but I have no doubt if I were to take this portrait to London to be sold in May, it will bring twice the sum that is likely to be obtained in New York

Perhaps after all as its sale has [hung?] fire so long I had better do this.

I will write also a brief note to Mr Gladstone whom I know personally & ask if he remembered the picture & his opinion of its merits.

Yours very truly

Katharine Chase.
