My son or rather stepson Lieut G.R. If he could be ordered on light duty for a short time it would be of a great relief to him. May I not ask of you this favor to employ a little of your influence to have the boy ordered on recruiting or mustering service for a short time? By so

doing you will lay me under obligations which I shall not soon forget.

Dear Sir

My son or rather stepson Lieut G.R. [Vernon?] of the 14th U.S. Infantry, now with Gen Meade has faithfully served his country almost from the commencement of the present civil war, has passed through many of the severest battles, beginning with that of Bull Run and closing with the one fought last Saturday morning He has undergone many hardships and being of a maturaly slender constitution it has gone hard with him. If he could be ordered on light duty for a short time it would be of a great relief to him. May I not ask of you this favor to employ a little of your influence to have the boy ordered on recruiting or mustering service for a short time? By so

doing you will lay me under obligations which I shall not soon forget.

He would like to be ordered to Illinois but would be perfectly satisfied to be relieved by almost any change.

Yours truly

L.P. Crawford

My Dear Sir:

I am home from Young's Point for a short time for the purpose of recruiting my health, somewhat seriously impaired by a violent and persistent attack of the prevailing camp disease at that place. I have had no opportunity until since my arrival here of reading your message to the Late Legislature, but having finished a careful perusal of it I desire to thank you, sir, as a citizen of Illinois and a soldier in the service of the Union, for

this matchless and timely official paper, so honorable to you as an individual and so creditable to you as the chief officer of our goodly and glorious State. Interesting and highly instructive in its statement of facts connected with our wonderful development in material resources, pregnant with Suggestions and recommendations of vital importance, yet its crowning merit is its eloquent, hopeful and unanswerable logic and appeal in behalf of the imperilled Government of our fathers. I have renewed my zeal and rebaptized my faith in your powerful and patriotic utterances, the Surest success, the speediest and safest peace lie lastly

in the directions which you have pointed out. I am hopeful that we shall all travel in those directions ere long. The evidences of a reaction among the contemptible plotters for an ignoble peace are everywhere visible. That they have made asses as well as knaves of themselves is a fact which they manifestly begin to realize. The State of Sentiment in the Army has doubtless largely contributed to this result.

I know you would be gratified, were you as well aware as I am, of the high personal esteem in which you are held among all the Illinois Regiments in Gen. Grant's portion of the Army, which is the only portion whose sentiments I have any knowledge of. I want

Dear Sir,
Yours of 15 is just see. I enclose herewith a list, as requested
of Union Men that would I think make good use
of such documents as you may [front] to them -
With a little more time I can + will if wished make
a list more fully extended - + one including some of those
who yet claim to be "Good Democrats", as [ever].

Your friend truly

L.S. Norton

Personal

An effort has been made to have D.C.Barber
Il. S. assessor of this District removed - it was favored
by the present Rep. ( Kerry Mendale) from this District - because (it
was said) that Barber was not for him for nomination
after "K." was nominated. I know that every nerve
was strained to elect him as successor - More
I believe that it would not be best to make any

change - least of all such a change as was proposed
The effort was made by a few as I understand
prompted by personal feelings toward Barber for
having so fully abandoned some of his old associations. And
dislike of the close organization of the Il. S. A. that I have been
instrumental in establishing - in other words they hated
me because they could not use me and Barber because
we would not either of us go for any thing like compromise
with "Democracy" even when christened "Man" - that effort
failed - it will probably be renewed again during
the fall or winter. I hope your influence will be
against it. But if Mr. Barbers removal is
determined upon by the powers that be, may I
ask that you urge my name for appointment
to the place as his successor. As 1st asst. I
have been conversant with the duties of the office
from the beginning. My health has been such for 2 or 3
years that I can attend personally to all the details as
well as general supervision of the office - of fitness cc you

Hon. Rich Yates
Jacksonville Ill.
Dear Sir,
Yours of 15 is just see.

My health has been such for 2 or 3
years that I can attend personally to all the details as
well as general supervision of the office - of fitness cc you
can judge - With highest regards,
as ever yours
