Sir it is with much pleasure that I embrace the opportunity now offered me of expressing my unqualified aprobation of my much esteemed friend Dr A Milner, now wishing to enter the service of the United States as an Assistant Surgeon, a course I have often urged upon him.

Professionally I have been acquainted with Dr Milner 5 or 6 years as a medical student of fare attainments, and for the last two years, I have been more intimately acquainted with his abilities as a Physician & Surgeon, having often met him at the bed side of the sick, and having had his assistance in several Surgical Operations, in all of which he has proved himself amply capable and efficient.

At this time when so many are proving themselves entirely unworthy, - Although perhaps capable - I think that a better appointment could not

will be made. As to loyalty I can say, that it is unquestionable having acted with more or less for the last two years in the Union League.

Again let me express my earnest convictions that, should my friend be employed in the capacity to which he aspires, none connected with the department will have reason to regret it.

Any consideration shown him will be estimated by myself and his many friends here as a personal favor

In the success of our valiant solitins sailors and our Glorious Cause I am truly yours

Governor: -

Having been, on the 1st Inst, ordered here from the Army in Kentucky, it is with profound regret that I observe, in common with other Illinois Officers and soldiers, a great Effort being made by public Journals, here and Elsewhere, to seek, by issues entirely unworthy of them, your defeat for Senator.

In the language of a gallant soldier, well known to you and to the Country. "To defeat Dick Yates for Senator would be as great an outrage as if Douglas had been beaten by his own party, when they attained the power, in 1858-9." and so it would be.

Believing it to be my duty & as a faithful soldier of the Country to add my testimony to Your great worth as a public man, & to assure you of my hearty support, I write this.
