The ACI grew out of the merger of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, Springfield Manufacturers and Employers Association, and the Springfield Industrial Development Commission. During the 1950s, the association mainly focused on improving the city sewer system, completed plans for the creation of three industrial parks, and worked for a comprehensive zoning plan. However, with the growth of the Springfield area in the 1960s, the local economy became a concern of the entire Springfield metropolitan area, not just the city of Springfield, so the ACI changed its name to the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce in December 1970. The new Chamber of Commerce continued the ACI’s efforts to promote and improve the Springfield community in the 1970s, focusing primarily on developing the city’s convention and tourism trade. Horner was committed to cleaning up corruption in the Chicago-run Democratic Party machine. An expert on Abraham Lincoln, Horner was an avid collector of Lincoln artifacts and papers. Henry's son, William, platted out the town and made land donations for churches, a school, and a city jail. William (1812-1899) and his wife, Mary Ann, had five children live to adulthood including George Wade Bacon Sadorus (1838-1911) and Henry Washington Sadorus (1840-1927). George served in the 125th Volunteers during the Civil War and then returned to work the family farm. George's son Frank was a photographer whose collection is now held by the Illinois State Museum. Ogilvie spent his career as a lawyer working in private practice and for the federal government including serving as a special assistant to the United States Attorney General. Title A name given to the resource Margery Adams Collection Description An account of the resource Margery Adams was a lifelong Springfield, Illinois, resident who donated her family home and property to the Illinois Audubon Society which now serves as the Margery Adams Wildlife Sanctuary. Adams was the great-granddaughter of James Adams, Springfield's first attorney. Margery Adams's father, James L. Adams, worked as the railroads in California and Illinois including serving as chief clerk for the Illinois Central Railroad during the 1870s through 1887. After leaving the railroad, he worked as a fruit farmer and truck gardener. He fathered James L. Adams, Jr. and Roe Reed Adams with his first wife, Florence Reed, and John Quincy and Margery with his second wife, Laura Snyder. Laura's sister, Mary C. Title A name given to the resource Monticello College Collection Subject The topic of the resource Women's colleges Universities and colleges Monticello College Monticello Female Seminary Haskell, Harriet, 1835-1907 Illinois--Godfrey Godfrey, Benjamin, 1794-1862 Description An account of the resource Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.
