Title A name given to the resource Margery Adams Collection Description An account of the resource Margery Adams was a lifelong Springfield, Illinois, resident who donated her family home and property to the Illinois Audubon Society which now serves as the Margery Adams Wildlife Sanctuary. Adams was the great-granddaughter of James Adams, Springfield's first attorney. Margery Adams's father, James L. Adams, worked as the railroads in California and Illinois including serving as chief clerk for the Illinois Central Railroad during the 1870s through 1887. After leaving the railroad, he worked as a fruit farmer and truck gardener. He fathered James L. Adams, Jr. and Roe Reed Adams with his first wife, Florence Reed, and John Quincy and Margery with his second wife, Laura Snyder. Laura's sister, Mary C. The Etter Family came to Illinois in 1826 with the arrival of Henry and Eliza Etter and their young family. Their son, Henry Etter, Jr., married Estereen Davidson and he worked on the family farm throughout his life. James Etter, the son of Henry and Estereen, was born in 1848. James worked on the family farm before moving to his own farm. He served as constable, road commissioner, township clerk and collector and assessor of the township of South Palmyra. He married Julia Richie in 1873 and had six children including Henry Ross Etter. Henry Ross Etter attended Drake College and worked as a teacher for four years. Beginning in 1903, Etter worked as an editor for the Weekly Transcript in Palmyra. Etter purchased the newspaper in 1909 and served as the publication's owner and publisher. Etter married Laura Thompson in 1905 and the couple had two children, Florence Evelyn and Lorton Dale. Heath & Sons Candy industry Candy Illinois--Robinson Pepsi-Cola Company Ice cream industry Description An account of the resource Lawrence Seymore (L. S.) Heath purchased a confectionary in Robinson, Illinois, in 1914. After observing his sons' success running the confectionary, Heath purchased an ice cream factory to add to the family business. The sons (Bayard, Everett, Virgil, and Vernon) sold the confectionary in 1931 and worked at the dairy while marketing their Heath English Toffee Bars. The company and popularity of the candy grew and Heath Candy bars were added to soldier's ration kits during World War II.  In 1935, the family secured the first Pepsi-Cola bottling franchise in Illinois. The company soon led the state in per capita Pepsi sales and had the second-highest per capita sales in the Midwest. The company incorporated in 1946 under the name L. S. Heath and Sons, Inc. and included Lawrence and his four sons, two daughters, and grandchildren living at the time.  The company developed Heath Ice Cream in the 1950s and licensed production nationwide. The dairy arm of the company was sold in 1963 followed by the Pepsi franchise in 1969 in an effort to focus on manufacturing candy. The company remained in the family until 1989 when the business was sold to Leaf, Inc. and then again to Hershey Chocolate U. S. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.
